Parts Quality Management: Direct Part Marking via Data Matrix Symbols for Mission Assurance

A United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) review of twelve NASA programs found widespread parts quality problems contributing to significant cost overruns, schedule delays, and reduced system reliability. Direct part-marking with Data Matrix symbols could significantly improve the quality of inventory control and parts lifecycle management. This paper examines the feasibility of using 15 marking technologies for use in future NASA programs. A structural analysis is based on marked material type, operational environment (e.g., ground, suborbital, orbital), durability of marks, ease of operation, reliability, and affordability. A cost-benefits analysis considers marking technology (data plates, label printing, direct part marking) and marking types (two-dimensional machine-readable, human-readable). Previous NASA parts marking efforts and historical cost data are accounted for, including in-house vs. outsourced marking. Some marking methods are still under development. While this paper focuses on NASA programs, results may be applicable to a variety of industrial environments.

Bayesian Model Selection for Reducing Bloat and Overfitting in Genetic Programming for Symbolic Regression

When performing symbolic regression using genetic programming, overfitting and bloat can negatively impact generalizability and interpretability of the resulting equations as well as increase computation times. A Bayesian fitness metric is introduced and its impact on bloat and overfitting during population evolution is studied and compared to common alternatives in the literature. The proposed approach was found to be more robust to noise and data sparsity in numerical experiments, guiding evolution to a level of complexity appropriate to the dataset. Further evolution of the population resulted not in overfitting or bloat, but rather in slight simplifications in model form. The ability to identify an equation of complexity appropriate to the scale of noise in the training data was also demonstrated. In general, the Bayesian model selection algorithm was shown to be an effective means of regularization which resulted in less bloat and overfitting when any amount of noise was present in the training data.

GASP Advancements With Symbolic Computations, Optimization, and Decoupled Numerical Methods

NASA is exploring advancements in hybrid-electric propulsion concepts for aircraft design. A new analysis capability has been deployed at NASA’s Ames Research Center using a new mathematical modeling framework in Python that leverages symbolic representation of mathematical expressions, optimization-based problem formulations, and standalone numerical methods. This capability, called Gascon, has been verified against NASA’s General Aviation Synthesis Program (GASP) results for several vehicles that exercise the analysis capability for a variety of aircraft classes and engine models, including both turbofans and turboprops. We believe this capability will set the stage for more rapid development of novel aircraft models with more flexible design assessments using optimization, and more traceable analysis for reproducibility. Additionally, a novel Pareto optimization-based design space exploration that shows the trade between range flown and fuel burn by manipulating the thrust split during cruise for a true parallel hybrid aircraft was developed by leveraging the unique features of Gascon.

Deep Symbolic Optimization for Electric Component Sizing in Fixed Topology Power Converters

Power converters (PC) are a major component in any current electronic hardware device. The development and design is usually guided by expert knowledge and heavily relies on human intuition and experience. The process is a very time consuming and costly activity and it is generally hard to improve upon current designs. As a first step towards autonomous PC design, we are here proposing a new framework for the sizing of components for fixed topology PCs based on given design requirements. To this end, we developed surrogate models for rapid evaluation of new topologies and adapt the deep symbolic optimization (DSO) framework to generate new topologies guided by a reinforcement learning training signal. In an empirical evaluation, we show that our DSO based approach is able to find the optimal configuration for all investigated topologies, while reducing the learning time by at least a factor of 100 compared to popular RL algorithms.

Limitations on the Subcarrier Frequency-to-Symbol Rate Ratio

For space missions in which tracking the residual carrier is absolutely critical, the use of a subcarrier to separate the data from the residual carrier is the best way to maximize residual-carrier tracking performance.

Modeling interval trendlines: Symbolic singular spectrum analysis for interval time series

Abstract In this article we propose an extension of singular spectrum analysis for interval‐valued time series. The proposed methods can be used to decompose and forecast the dynamics governing a set‐valued stochastic process. The resulting components on which the interval time series is decomposed can be understood as interval trendlines, cycles, or noise. Forecasting can be conducted through a linear recurrent method, and we devised generalizations of the decomposition method for the multivariate setting. The performance of the proposed methods is showcased in a simulation study. We apply the proposed methods so to track the dynamics governing the Argentina Stock Market (MERVAL) in real time, in a case study over a period of turbulence that led to discussions of the government of Argentina with the International Monetary Fund.
