Closed-cycle power supply for fluidic control systems

Power supply utilizes small quantities of two-phase fluid of suitable thermodynamic properties for circulation in a capillary-pumped heat transfer loop. Fluid is vaporized in evaporator, passed through fluidic system load, condensed, pumped by multistage capillary pump, and returned to the evaporator.

The development of a noncryogenic nitrogen/oxygen supply technique

A development program was conducted in two phases to define the characteristics and requirements of an electrochemical oxygen/nitrogen supply technique for space station application. In Phase 1, electrode formulations and structures suitable for use as anodes in an oxygen/nitrogen generator were experimentally investigated. A one-man model oxygen/nitrogen generator integrated with a space cabin atmosphere simulator was fabricated and successfully tested in Phase 2. Data from these tests were used to update a computer routine model of the cabin atmosphere control using the oxygen/nitrogen generator technique. A specification and preliminary design for a 12-man oxygen/ nitrogen generation system was prepared.

Detailed design of a 100-We multicell thermionic power supply.

Confirmation of the general trends of a previously reported parametric study of plutonia-fueled thermionic generators in a detailed 100-We generator design. The detailed design takes into account the additional weight of system-integration components and shows that design refinements of all aeroshell components are possible when a specific generator configuration is considered. An optimized 100-We thermionic power supply design is presented, reflecting a 0.98 reliability goal after five years of operation. The optimum multicell array consists of 28 isomite converters, each producing approximately 3.6 We at end-of-life. The optimum arrangement of converters in the aeroshell is a four-column, seven-row stacking configuration connected electrically as a two-column, 14-row array.

Shuttle cryogenics supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-2, part 1: Appendix programmers manual for math model

An appendix to the programmers manual for the mathematical model pertaining to the design of cryogenic supply systems for spacecraft is presented. The program listing was produced using the EXEC-8 LISTALL processor which lists a file in alphabetical order. Since the processor does not differentiate between subroutines, functions, and procedure definition processors, each subprogram has been relabeled to clearly identify the type of symbolic listing.

Shuttle cryogenics supply system optimization study. Volume 5, B-3, part 2: Appendix to programmers manual for math model

A computer programmer's manual for a digital computer which will permit rapid and accurate parametric analysis of current and advanced attitude control propulsion systems is presented. The concept is for a cold helium pressurized, subcritical cryogen fluid supplied, bipropellant gas-fed attitude control propulsion system. The cryogen fluids are stored as liquids under low pressure and temperature conditions. The mathematical model provides a generalized form for the procedural technique employed in setting up the analysis program.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 6: Appendixes

The optimization of the cryogenic supply system for space shuttles is discussed. The subjects considered are: (1) auxiliary power unit parametric data, (2) propellant acquisition, (3) thermal protection and thermodynamic properties, (4) instrumentation and controls, and (5) initial component redundancy evaluations. Diagrams of the systems are provided. Graphs of the performance capabilities are included.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 4: Cryogenic cooling in environmental control systems

An analysis of cryogenic fluid cooling in the environmental control system of the space shuttle was conducted. The technique for treating the cryogenic fluid storage and supply tanks and subsystems as integrated systems was developed. It was concluded that a basic incompatibility exists between the heat generated and the cryogen usage rate and cryogens cannot be used to absorb the generated heat. The use of radiators and accumulators to provide additional cooling capability is recommended.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 2: Technical report, sections 4 through 9

The design and development of cryogenic supply systems for space shuttle vehicles are discussed. The weights, component counts, and statements of advantages and disadvantages of the systems considered are presented. Performance characteristics of the systems are analyzed in the form of graphs. Block diagrams and engineering drawings of the candidate systems are provided. Special consideration is given to flow rates and thermodynamic properties of the cryogenic systems.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 5A-1: Users manual for math models

The Integrated Math Model for Cryogenic Systems is a flexible, broadly applicable systems parametric analysis tool. The program will effectively accommodate systems of considerable complexity involving large numbers of performance dependent variables such as are found in the individual and integrated cryogen systems. Basically, the program logic structure pursues an orderly progression path through any given system in much the same fashion as is employed for manual systems analysis. The system configuration schematic is converted to an alpha-numeric formatted configuration data table input starting with the cryogen consumer and identifying all components, such as lines, fittings, and valves, each in its proper order and ending with the cryogen supply source assembly. Then, for each of the constituent component assemblies, such as gas generators, turbo machinery, heat exchangers, and accumulators, the performance requirements are assembled in input data tabulations. Systems operating constraints and duty cycle definitions are further added as input data coded to the configuration operating sequence.

Power supply for carbon dioxide lasers

An improved ac power supply for a CO2 laser which eliminates the need for ballast resistors to excite a stable discharge is disclosed. The method involves the connection of an inductance in front of the rectifier. This procedure provides a nondissapative positive resistance effect for cancelling the negative differential resistance exhibited by the tube at frequencies below 2 KHz. Such an inductance setup also increases the efficiency of the system.

Evaluation of commercially supplied silver coated Teflon for spacecraft temperature control usage

A series of tests are described which were performed to evaluate the acceptability of a commercially supplied silver backed teflon thermal control coating relative to teflon previously coated at GSFC. Optical measurements made on numerous samples indicate that the commercial material possesses an average solar absorptance of 0.085, an emittance of 0.76 and an average alpha/epsilon equal to 0.112, all of which are equivalent to the GSFC coated teflon. The emittance of the protective inconel backing was found to be 0.037. The coating is shown to have good adhesion at the Ag-teflon interface and exposure to UV irradiation uncovered no coating irregularities. Temperature cycling over the range -135 C to +200 C produced crazing in the evaporated Ag layer as expected but no delamination was observed. The suitability of Mystik no. 7366 and 3M no. 467 adhesives as bonding agents for the metallized polymer is demonstrated. Various problems associated with production reproducibility and selection of a proper bonding process are discussed.

Water supply studies

The primary test site for water supply investigations continues to be the Feather River watershed in northeastern California. This test site includes all of the area draining into and including the Oroville Reservoir. The principal effort is to determine the extent to which remote sensing techniques, when properly employed, can provide information useful to those persons concerned with the management and planning of lands and facilities for the production of water, using the Oroville Reservoir and the California Water Project as the focus for the study. In particular, emphasis is being placed on determining the cost effectiveness of information derived through remote sensing as compared with that currently being derived through more conventional means.
