Clathrate XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 : A New Branch on the Clathrate Family Tree

Abstract The compositional screening of K‐Zn‐Sb ternary system aided by machine learning, rapid exploratory synthesis using KH salt‐like precursor and in situ powder X‐ray diffraction yielded a novel clathrate type XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . This clathrate consists of a 3D Zn‐Sb framework hosting K + ions inside polyhedral cages, some of which are reminiscent of known clathrate types while others are unique to this structure type. The complex non‐centrosymmetric structure in the tetragonal space group was solved by means of single crystal X‐ray diffraction as a 6‐component twin due to pseudocubic symmetry and further confirmed by high‐resolution synchrotron powder X‐ray diffraction and state‐of‐the‐art scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron‐precise composition of this clathrate yields narrow‐gap p ‐type semiconductor with extraordinarily low thermal conductivity due to displacement or “rattling” of K cations inside oversized cages and as well as to twinning, stacking faults and antiphase boundary defects.

Bio-Templated Chiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework for Enantioselective Chemoresistive Sensing

Chiral metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained rising attention as ordered nanoporous materials for enantiomer separations, chiral catalysis, and sensing. Among those, chiral MOFs are generally obtained through complex synthetic routes by using a limited choice of reactive chiral organic precursors as the primary linkers or auxiliary ligands. Here, we report a template-controlled synthesis of chiral MOFs from achiral precursors grown on chiral nematic cellulose-derived nanostructured bio-templates. We demonstrate that chiral MOFs, specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), unc-[Zn(2-MeIm) 2 , 2-MeIm=2-methylimidazole], can be grown from regular precursors within nanoporous organized chiral nematic nanocelluloses via directed assembly on twisted bundles of cellulose nanocrystals. The template-grown chiral ZIF possesses tetragonal crystal structure with chiral space group of P4 1 , which is different from traditional cubic crystal structure of I-43 m for freely grown conventional ZIF-8. The uniaxially compressed dimensions of the unit cell of templated ZIF and crystalline dimensions are signatures of this structure. We observe that the templated chiral ZIF can facilitate the enantiotropic sensing. It shows enantioselective recognition and chiral sensing abilities with a low limit of detection of 39 μM and the corresponding limit of chiral detection of 300 μM for representative chiral amino acid, D- and L- alanine.

Giant Magnetostriction in Ferrimagnetic SmFe 5 As 3

Magnetostrictive materials are of interest not only from a fundamental perspective but also for their potential applications, spanning spintronics to energy harvesting. A new magnetostrictive material—SmFe 5 As 3 —reveals a complex interplay between magnetostriction, magnetic properties, and the crystal structure behavior. The ground state of SmFe 5 As 3 is ferrimagnetic, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility data, band-structure calculations, and XANES measurements. At T m1 = 28 ± 4 K, part of the Fe sublattice reorients, transitioning into a ferromagnetic state. This is followed by an entrance into the paramagnetic state at T m2 = 76 ± 4 K. The effects observed in the magnetic measurements are accompanied by structural phase transitions. All three phases—below T m1 , between T m1 and T m2 , and above T m2 —are described by the same structural motif of the UCr 5 P 3 type (monoclinic space group P2 1 /m), differing only in the degree of deformation of the Fe–As framework. The new material exhibits giant magnetostriction of 2500 x 10 -6 . Dilatometry measurements on a SmFe 5 As 3 single crystal indicate strongly diverse behavior, exhibiting not only negative, but also zero, as well as positive thermo-elastic effects.

Distinct Composition‐Dependent Topological Hall Effect in Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb

Abstract Spintronics, an evolving interdisciplinary field at the intersection of magnetism and electronics, explores innovative applications of electron charge and spin properties for advanced electronic devices. The topological Hall effect (THE), a key component in spintronics, has gained significance due to emerging theories surrounding noncoplanar chiral spin textures. This study focuses on Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb, a material crystalizing in centrosymmetric space group with rich magnetic phases tunable by Zn contents. Through comprehensive magnetic and transport characterizations, we found that the high‐Zn ( x > 0.6) samples display THE which is enhanced with decreasing temperature, while THE in the low‐Zn ( x < 0.6) samples show an opposite trend. The coexistence of those distinct temperature dependencies for THE suggests very different magnetic interactions/structures for different compositions and underscores the strong coupling between magnetism and transport in Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb. The findings contribute to understanding topological magnetism in centrosymmetric tetragonal lattices, establishing Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb as a unique platform for exploring tunable transport effects and opening avenues for further exploration in the realm of spintronics.

Charge-Separated and Lewis Paired Metal–Organic Framework for Anion Exchange and CO 2 Chemical Fixation

Charge-separated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a unique class of MOFs that can possess added properties originating from the exposed ionic species. A new charge-separated MOF, namely, UNM-6 synthesized from a tetrahedral borate ligand and Co 2+ cation is reported in this paper. UNM-6 crystalizes into the highly symmetric P43n space group with fourfold interpenetration, despite the stoichiometric imbalance between the B and Co atoms, which also leads to loosely bound NO 3 – anions within the crystal structure. These NO 3 – ions can be quantitatively exchanged with various other anions, leading to Lewis acid (Co 2+ ) and Lewis base (anions) pairs within the pores and potentially cooperative catalytic activities. For example, UNM-6-Br, the MOF after anion exchange with Br – anions, displays high catalytic activity and stability in reactions of CO 2 chemical fixation into cyclic carbonates.

New Noncentrosymmetric Tetrel Pnictides Composed of Square‐Planar Gold(I) with Peculiar Bonding

Abstract Three novel isostructural equiatomic gold tetrel pnictides, AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs, were synthesized and characterized. These phases crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) monoclinic space group Cc (no. 9), featuring square‐planar Au within cis ‐[AuTt 2 Pn 2 ] units (Tt=tetrel, Si, Ge; Pn=pnictogen, P, As). This is in drastic contrast to the structure of previously reported AuSiP, which exhibits typical linear coordination of Au with Si and P. Chemical bonding analysis through the electron localization function suggests covalent two‐center two‐electron Tt−Pn bonds, and three‐center Au−Tt−Au and Au−Pn−Au bonds with 1.6 e − per bond. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies support the covalent and nonionic nature of Au−Pn and Au−Tt bonds. The title materials were found to be n ‐type narrow‐gap semiconductors or semimetals, with nearly temperature‐independent electrical resistivities and low thermal conductivities. A combination of the semimetallic properties with tunable NCS structure provides opportunities for the development of materials based on gold tetrel pnictides.

3D Electron Diffraction Structure Determination of Terrylene, a Promising Candidate for Intermolecular Singlet Fission

Herein we demonstrate the prowess of the 3D electron diffraction approach by unveiling the structure of terrylene, the third member in the series of peri-condensed naphthalene analogues, which has eluded structure determination for 65 years. The structure was determined by direct methods using electron diffraction data and corroborated by dispersion-inclusive density functional theory optimizations. Terrylene crystalizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /a, arranging in a sandwich-herringbone packing motif, similar to analogous compounds. Having solved the crystal structure, we use many-body perturbation theory to evaluate the excited-state properties of terrylene in the solid-state. We find that terrylene is a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission, comparable to tetracene and rubrene.

Molten Flux Synthesis of Plutonium (IV) Silicates K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 and Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15

Few plutonium containing silicates have been reported in the literature and only one other tetravalent plutonium silicate structure has been reported using the flux growth method. With the goal of understanding actinide incorporation into silicates, we describe herein two new plutonium (IV) silicates, Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 and K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 , synthesized using a mixed alkali chloride/alkali fluoride flux growth. Both structures crystallize in the C2/c space group with lattice parameters a=24.2980(10) Å, b=7.1466(3) Å, c=17.2025(8) Å and $\blacksquare$96.6560(10)° for Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 , and a=9.9478(2) Å, b=5.59820 (10) Å, c=13.1848(2) Å, and $\blacksquare$105.7400(10)° for K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 . Comparisons to the synthesis of other reported alkali actinide silicates (Ce, U, and Th) are made. Raman spectra and DFT calculations of formation enthalpies and vibrational modes provide confirmation of structure refinements and enhanced product characterization for comparison with other materials.

Structural and Spectroscopic Trends in Alkali Tris(Acetato)Actinyl(VI) Complexes

A series of alkali tris(acetato)actinyl(VI) compounds M[AnO 2 (CH 3 COO) 3 ] (M=Na, K, Rb, Cs and An=U, Np, Pu) is reported, applying a combination of singlecrystal X-ray diffraction, solid-state Raman spectroscopy, and U(VI) luminescence spectroscopy for their structural and spectroscopic characterization. The results show that complexes formed from the same alkali metal but different actinyl ions are mostly isostructural. The symmetric actinyl stretch (ν 1 (An=O yl )) in these isostructural complexes undergoes a redshift within the actinide series despite the shortening of the actinyl bond due to the actinide contraction. Complexes formed from the same actinyl but co-crystallized with different alkali metals show a progression toward lower space group symmetry. While the actinyl bond length remains unmodulated within the alkali series, a small redshift of ν 1 (An=O yl ) is observed, indicating minor changes in the vibrational properties of the actinyl moiety caused by the structural progression towards lower symmetry. This subtle change is also evidenced by a redshift of the U(VI) luminescence spectra within the M[UO 2 (CH 3 COO) 3 ] series.

New Synthetic Route to 4,6‐Diamino‐5,7‐dinitro‐benzo‐furazan, Important Decomposition Product of 1,3,5‐Triamino‐2,4,6‐trinitrobenzene

The important 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) decomposition byproduct, 4,6-diamino-5,7-dinitro-benzo-furazan (F 1 ), was prepared in a four-step reaction sequence starting with commercially available materials through a key intermediate, 4,6-dichloro-5,7-dinitro-benzo-furazan. The introduction of azido to 4,6-dichloro-benzo-furazan, followed by nitration and amination gave F 1 in good yield. This new method showed a greatly improved yield and ease of purification than previous methods (the total yield was 30%–40% in seven steps). F 1 is a stable yellow solid with a melting point of 308.7°C and a thermal decomposing temperature of 310.3°C (differential scanning calorimetry at 10°C/min heating rate). The solid-state structure was solved by single-crystal X-ray analyses at low temperatures (100 K). The compound crystallizes in a P 2 1 c space group with the formula C 6 H 4 N 6 O 5 •H 2 O with 12 molecules of F 1 /H 2 O in the unit cell. This compound has eluded complete characterization for almost 50 years. With this information, more advanced decomposition models can be created to further improve critical safety margins in handling the energetic material, TATB.

Crystal structures of inhibitor complexes of M‐PMV protease with visible flap loops

Abstract Mason‐Pfizer monkey virus protease (PR) was crystallized in complex with two pepstatin‐based inhibitors in P 1 space group. In both crystal structures, the extended flap loops that lock the inhibitor/substrate over the active site, are visible in the electron density either completely or with only small gaps, providing the first observation of the conformation of the flap loops in dimeric complex form of this retropepsin. The H‐bond network in the active site (with D26N mutation) differs from that reported for the P 2 1 crystal structures and is similar to a rarely occurring system in HIV‐1 PR.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Physical Properties of BaSnS 2

Phase-pure BaSnS 2 , with space group P2 1 /c, is synthesized, and the structural and physical properties are investigated. We report thermal properties and optical measurements are reported for the first time. The Debye temperature and Sommerfeld coefficient are obtained from temperature-dependent heat capacity measurements, the latter indicating that BaSnS 2 is an electrical insulator. A direct bandgap of 2.4 eV is obtained from diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The findings herein lay the foundation for understanding the physical properties of this material and are part of a continuing effort to investigate previously unexplored ternary chalcogenides.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of La 2 SiP 4

La 2 SiP 4 (mP-28, Z=4, Wyckoff sequence e 7 , space group P2 1 /c (No. 14), a=10.8230(6) Å, b=7.5208(4) Å, c=7.9189(4) Å, and β=105.389(2)°) which crystallizes in the La 2 CuS 4 structure type is reported here. Instead of isolated CuS 3 triangles bridged by disulfide anions, in the crystal structure of La 2 SiP 4 , one-dimensional zig-zag chains composed of SiP 4 tetrahedra connected by P–P bonds are present. Lanthanum cations fill the voids between the chains and are coordinated by either 9P or 8P+Si atoms. La2SiP4 is a narrow bandgap semiconductor with calculated and measured optical bandgaps of 0.35 eV and 0.85(1) eV, respectively.
