Modeling, Optimization, and Design of Experiments of a Rotary Packed Bed Contactor for NGCC–Based CO2 Capture Using Solid Sorbents

This presentation will be given at the 2024 AICHE annual meeting on October 30th. This presentation focuses on modeling a rotary packed bed contactor for CO2 capture. The RPB is an alternative contactor to fixed beds and optimization is performed to minimize the energy requirement. A design of experiments case study of the RPB is also performed.

4.3.1.1 TCF: Recovery of Lithium from Geothermal Brine with Lithium-Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxide Chloride Sorbents

Lithium has gained importance as a near-critical element for various energy storage applications, and efforts are ongoing to develop simple and cost-effective methods for lithium recovery. For instance, in a typical 50 MW geothermal power plant in the Salton Sea, United States, approximately 15,000 metric tons of Li 2 CO 3 or LiOH salts can be produced annually by recovering and converting LiCl from geothermal plant waste solutions. Currently, approximately 390 MW of geothermal power is generated in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area, which corresponds to potential Li 2 CO 3 production of approximately 120,000 metric tons per year. This makes lithium recovery from geothermal brines a promising, potentially low-cost source of lithium, contributing significantly to the global supply chain.

Development of Advanced Solid Sorbents for Direct Air Capture (Final Technical Report – Unlimited)

RTI Team, proposes an approach for demonstrating carbon-neutral methanol (MeOH) produced from carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removed from air by direct air capture (DAC) and green hydrogen (H 2 ) from water (H 2 O) electrolysis using renewable electricity. The proposed project will include completing a feasibility study that informs a conceptual design of an integrated process that meets technical and economic targets set forth.

Concentrating lithium carbonate after regeneration of lithium sorbent

A system and method that includes flowing brine containing a metal ion through a reactor that includes porous particles having metal ion imprinted polymer having selective binding sites. The system and method further include discharging the brine from the reactor, contacting the porous particles with water, and pressurizing the reactor with carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide reacts with the adsorbed metal ions to form a metal carbonate solution, where the metal carbonate solution can then be continuously purified with ion exchange. The method can include recycling eluent from the ion exchange back into the system for re-use. The method further includes depressurizing the reactor to precipitate metal carbonate from the metal carbonate solution and discharging the metal carbonate solution from the reactor.

Separation of a target substance from a fluid or mixture using encapsulated sorbents

Method and apparatus for separating a target substance from a fluid or mixture. Capsules having a coating and stripping solvents encapsulated in the capsules are provided. The coating is permeable to the target substance. The capsules having a coating and stripping solvents encapsulated in the capsules are exposed to the fluid or mixture. The target substance migrates through the coating and is taken up by the stripping solvents. The target substance is separated from the fluid or mixture by driving off the target substance from the capsules.
