Advanced silver sheathed 2212/Ag wire for high field magnets

Commercial High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) are all tape shaped (widths > 10 times thickness), because achieving useful current densities required them to be processed into this form, even though this also makes it more problematic to use them in some important coil types. Our product is based on 2212 (Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8) and it is the only HTS that can be processed into high current density wire forms that are similar to proven low temperature superconductors (LTS), while surpassing them in field generating and operating temperature capability. Required now are higher current density, lower cost and longer length 2212 wires to enable broad utilization where HTS tape usage is problematic. In Phase II we developed vital cost-lowering process technology elements and we test-processed longer wires with the standard commercial design as baseline and benchmark for our lower cost, higher quality and longer piece length wire advances. By initial application of Jc-boosting wire features, these wires exhibited significant performance increases. This Phase IIA program has now developed and qualified these technologies for lower cost, higher quality and longer piece length manufacturing in combination with current density-boosting wire features, paving the way to manufacturing capability that is essential for cost-effective commercial utilization of 2212 wire. Technical areas included automated, high uniformity powder packing, advanced drawing, annealing, lubricant cleaning and filament bundling, followed by integration of higher current density wire features and process variations.

Improved high-temperature metal-sheathed cables

Process prevents moist air degradation of cables insulated with magnesium oxide. Electrical-grade silicone oil is polymerized by heat application to produce water repellant surface coating. Insulation treated with this oil repels moisture.

Report of the Plasma Physics and Environmental Perturbation Laboratory (PPEPL) working groups. Volume 1: Plasma probes, wakes, and sheaths working group

It is shown in this report that comprehensive in-situ study of all aspects of the entire zone disturbance caused by a body in a flowing plasma resulted in a large number if requirements on the shuttle-PPEPL facility. A large amount of necessary in-situ observation can be obtained by adopting appropriate modes of performing the experiments. Requirements are indicated for worthwhile studies, of some aspects of the problems, which can be carried out effectively while imposing relatively few constraints on the early missions. Considerations for the desired growth and improvement of the PPEPL to facilitate more complete studies in later missions are also discussed. For Vol. 2, see N74-28170; for Vol# 3, see N74-28171.

The plasma wake of mesosonic conducting bodies. I - An experimental parametric study of ion focusing by the plasma sheath

The experimental investigation considered is concerned with the deflection of ion streams resulting from the interaction of conducting test bodies with an unmagnetized, mesosonic (supersonic with respect to ions but subsonic with respect to electrons) plasma stream. The investigation is, therefore, limited to plasma-electrostatic interactions. The experimental conditions are similar to those of the spacecraft-ionospheric interaction in that the ionic mass and number density, the electron temperature, and the plasma drift velocity ranges include values appropriate for small satellites or diagnostic probes at 200 to 400 km altitude. The study provides direct observations of deflected ion streams for cylindrical test bodies and gives a detailed description of the effects of the governing, dimensionless parameter ratios obtained from the steady-state, nonmagnetic Maxwell-Vlasov system of equations.

Numerical simulation of sheath structure and current-voltage characteristics of a conductor-dielectric disk in a plasma

A computer program is being developed to simulate the interaction of a plasma with a conducting disk. Two configurations are examined: (1) the conductor is a 'button' in the center of a larger dielectric disk, and (2) the conducting disk is covered by a dielectric disk to the same size with a circular hole in the center of the dielectric, exposing a region of conductor. Results of the electrostatic plasma simulation are presented both with and without secondary electron emission from the dielectric; characteristic curves and voltage profiles are included.
