Dual Phase Change Thermal Diodes with High Rectification for Thermal Management near Room Temperature

Thermal diodes are passive systems that modulate their thermal resistance depending on the direction of temperature gradient, thereby allowing preferential directional heat flow. A dual phase thermal diode consists of a junction between two phase change materials that have opposing temperature-dependent thermal conductivity trends, and whose performance (i.e., rectification ratio) is related to the ratio of the thermal conductivities of the different phases. In this work, a dual phase change diode with a rectification ratio of ~3.5 for an applied temperature bias of ~40 K is presented, which is among the highest-performing junction diodes based on phase change materials at the macroscale for near room temperature applications. The diode is composed of an aqueous solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), a thermo-responsive polymer, and calcium chloride hexahydrate -- a solid-liquid phase change material. Experimental insights are provided into the contributions of different heat transfer mechanisms, conduction, and convection, and the effect of concentration of the thermo-responsive polymer.

Repurposing Inactive Oil and Gas Wells for Energy Storage: Maximizing the Potential Via Optimal Drivetrain Control: Preprint

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on utilizing energy storage to enhance grid resilience against disruptive events. While renewable energy supply continues to expand, gravity-based solutions like pumped hydro remain dominant in the commercial space. However, their geographical limitations constrain availability, scalability, and increase costs for co-locating solar and wind energy. An alternative approach proposes repurposing idle oil and gas wells located closer to existing grid infrastructure, offering a promising and cost-effective solution. This paper addresses the optimization and control of a regenerative drive system coupled to an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine in a 300-meter well with a 100-Newton weight. The study employs a dynamic MATLAB/Simulink model to simulate the operation of the electric drivetrain system during storage and discharge operations. The results demonstrate an initial round-trip efficiency of 85.9% for the electrical system alone and identify crucial factors for maximizing efficiency. The optimized operation and control of the electromechanical drivetrain system hold great potential for minimizing the levelized cost of storage while maximizing efficiency and revenue generation.

Electrophysical Properties of Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 Surface-Barrier Diodes

Diode structures, obtained by vacuum deposition of Al onto the surface of a p-Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 single crystals, have been manufactured and studied. Applying the Sah-Noyce–Shockley carrier generation-recombination model, a quantitative description of the electrical characteristics of diodes has been achieved. Here, the resistivity of p-Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 crystals was equal to ρ ≈ 400 Ω⋅cm and was determined from the I–V characteristics of the structure with two ohmic contacts, which were obtained by chemical deposition of gold. The activation energy of the dark temperature dependence of resistivity ρ=ρ(T) was equal to ΔE≈0.24 eV. The forbidden gap of p-Cd 0.96 Mn 0.04 Te 0.96 Se 0.04 crystals, found from the optical absorption spectra, was equal to E g =1.495 eV.

Feasibility of the LAMMPS SPH Package for Simulating Bubble Motion in Vibrating Containers

The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) package within LAMMPS is explored as a possible tool for simulating the motion of bubbles in a vibrating liquid-filled container. As an initial test case, the unphysical but computationally less intense situation of a two-dimensional single bubble rising in a quiescent liquid under the influence of gravity is considered herein. Although physically plausible behavior was obtained under certain conditions, this behavior depends strongly on the system parameters. Moreover, the large density ratio between the liquid and bubble requires extremely small timesteps, which make the simulations undesirably computationally expensive. Ultimately, it was determined that this method is not feasible for providing quantitatively accurate results for the desired application.
