Optimal Energy Dispatch of Distributed PVs for the Next Generation of Distribution Management Systems

Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) are being widely adopted by electric utilities for managing and optimizing the operations of their distribution systems. Distributed photovoltaic (DPV) systems with smart inverters can be controlled to adjust active power and reactive power outputs, and they are envisioned to become a part of (centrally or distributed) controllable assets managed by the ADMS for optimizing grid operations. This paper proposes an optimal energy dispatch strategy controlling DPV systems for regulating distribution voltages and achieving conservation voltage reduction. A convex optimization model is proposed with the use of linearized power flow, and the gradient projection algorithm is used to solve the optimal active power and reactive power outputs of smart inverters. The proposed optimal energy dispatch is implemented using an open-source ADMS platform, and simulation results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach on improving distribution grid operations.

Power Decoupling Method for Voltage Source Inverters Using Grid Voltage Modulated Direct Power Control in Unbalanced System

The grid voltage modulated direct power control (GVM-DPC) is a novel power regulation method for grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSI). However, interactions between real and reactive powers still exist in GVM-DPC under unbalanced grid voltage condition, which may deteriorate its transient performance. Here, this article proposes a power decoupling method for GVM-DPC-based VSI in unbalanced systems based on the dynamic feedforward power compensation strategy, which can reduce the coupling magnitudes of real and reactive powers in the transient stages. First, the power coupling mechanism of positive and negative sequence real and reactive powers of VSI under the unbalanced voltage condition is analyzed. Then, the power coupling magnitudes (PCM) are derived according to relationships among the positive sequence components of real power, reactive power and point of common coupling (PCC) voltages. Next, the PCM are compensated into the GVM-DPC for the better decoupling performance. Furthermore, a stability analysis of the proposed control system is studied based on the impedance model, and a comparison with the traditional power decoupling method based on virtual impedance is conducted to show the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, simulations, hardware-in-loop test and experiment are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Controller Regulates Auxiliary Source for Solar Power

Load driven by two motors continuously draws power from a varying source (solar cells) and steady auxiliary source (utility company). Power-factor controller apportions electrical load between two sources to maintain motor speed. This novel application of power-factor controller would regulate input of auxiliary energy to a solar-powered system in response to availability of Sunlight.

Description of the PMAD DC test bed architecture and integration sequence

NASA-LEWIS is responsible for the development, fabrication, and assembly of the electric power system (EPS) for the Space Station Freedom (SSF). The SSF power system is radically different from previous spacecraft power systems in both the size and complexity of the system. Unlike past spacecraft power systems, the SSF EPS will grow and be maintained on orbit and must be flexible to meet challenging user power needs. The SSF power system is also unique in comparison with terrestrial power systems because it is dominated by power electronic converters which regulate and control the power. A description is provided of the Power Management and Distribution DC Testbed which was assembled to support the design and early evaluation of the SSF EPS. A description of the integration process used in the assembly sequence is also given along with a description of the support facility.

Two-Stage Deep Reinforcement Learning for Distribution System Voltage Regulation and Peak Load Management: Preprint

The growing integration of distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) in distribution systems could result in adverse effects during grid operation. This paper develops a soft actor critic-based deep reinforcement learning (SAC-DRL) solution to simultaneously control PV inverters and battery energy storage systems for voltage regulation and peak load demand shaving. The novel two-stage framework, featured with two different control agents, is applied for daytime and nighttime operation to enhance the control performance. Comparison results with other control methods on a real feeder in Western Colorado demonstrate that the proposed method can provide advanced voltage regulation with modest active power curtailment for peak demand reduction.

A Penalty Scheme for Mitigating Uninstructed Deviation of Generation Outputs From Variable Renewables in a Distribution Market

With rapid growth of distributed renewable generation, the establishment of electricity distribution markets has attracted widespread concerns. Different from existing transmission grid-scale electricity markets, an electricity distribution market is featured by numerous small-scale prosumers, and zero marginal cost and intermittency of renewable generation units. Against this background, this paper first extends an average pricing market (APM) mechanism for pricing renewable generation outputs with zero marginal cost in the distribution network concerned. Then, to mitigate the uninstructed volatility of renewable generation outputs and power demand, a penalty scheme is proposed for deviations between the real-time demand/output and market cleared bid/offer, with frequency regulation service (FRS) from energy storage systems (ESSs) considered. It is proved that the market volatility can be well controlled within an expected limit through properly setting the penalty prices for load demand and generation output fluctuations. Also, with this mechanism a non-negative market surplus could always be attained. Case studies are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed distribution market mechanism and penalty scheme.

Optimizing Grid Regulation With Gravity Storage Systems: A Comparative Analysis With Different Motor Inertias: Preprint

The integration of renewable energy sources into power grids necessitates solutions for grid support and stability during fluctuations in electricity generation and demand. Gravity energy storage systems (GESS) are emerging as a promising technology for managing the balance between the energy supply and demand. However, their capacity to optimize energy flow and offer voltage and frequency regulation amid generation-demand imbalances is less reported. This paper investigates the control of GESS for optimizing energy flow during voltage and frequency regulation. The study evaluates the regulation capabilities of GESS with different motor inertias during a Texas grid event: one with a high-speed, low-inertia motor and another with a low-speed, high-inertia motor. Results indicate that both GESS systems provide fast frequency response by converting potential energy into kinetic energy and vice versa, with a response time of 1.5 seconds from the frequency variation. This aligns with grid requirements for primary frequency response from traditional synchronous generators and motors with large inertia. Furthermore, a GESS with a high-inertia motor may be able operate over a broader range of frequency variations whereas a low-inertia system may be limited by thermal constraints of the motor.

Grid Value Investigation of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converters

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the value that medium voltage back-to-back (MVB2B) converters can be realized through two potential applications: voltage regulation via the provision of reactive power supply or absorption, and distributed energy resource (DER) hosting capacity improvement via the controlled transfer of real power within the distribution system. Two groups of distribution systems have been prepared for the value investigation: the IEEE 123-bus system for the voltage regulation study and two utility-provided, realistic distribution systems for the DER hosting capacity improvement study. The results demonstrate that the MVB2B converter can realize significant value for the grid through these two applications. In particular, with the MVB2B converter transferring power between two feeders, DER-based power can be routed to nearby loads instead of feed through the distribution substation. Additionally, the size of energy storage elements used to enable higher levels of DERs can be significantly reduced.

Comparison of Probabilistic Forecasts for Predictive Voltage Control

This paper explores predictive cooperative voltage control in distribution systems with highly variable sources such as photovoltaics (PV). The goal is to maintain the voltage profile within the limits despite the fluctuations due to sudden changes in solar power generation. The predictive voltage control method relies on probabilistic solar power and load forecasts to select the optimum Voltage Regulator (VR) taps appropriately. VR taps are selected to minimize the risk of voltage violation. A modified version of the IEEE 123 system is used as the case study. A 100% penetration of solar power is assumed for the distribution system with profiles for solar generation and loads added to the system. Three different probabilistic forecast models (Quantile Regression (QR), Gaussian distribution and volatility forecasting using Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH)) are explored in this study. The results for the VR taps and Voltage Deviation Index (VDI) are compared to find the most effective forecast model.

Coordinated Ramping Product and Regulation Reserve Procurements in CAISO and MISO using Multi-Scale Probabilistic Solar Power Forecasts (Pro2R)

How can probabilistic solar forecasts lower costs and improve reliability for independent system operator (ISO) markets? We tackle this question in three steps. First, we enhance an existing solar forecasting system to provide well-calibrated hours-ahead probabilistic forecasts. We then relate the degree of uncertainty in those forecasts to error distributions for net load ramps for the California ISO (CAISO) using statistical and machine learning methods. Projected net load errors conditioned on solar uncertainty are translated into flexible ramp requirements that therefore reflect real-time meteorological and solar conditions, improving on typical ISO procedures. Finally, a multi-period look-ahead production cost model quantifies how conditional ramp requirements can a) decrease operating costs by lowering requirements compared to often conservative unconditional methods, and b) reduce generation scarcity events and consequently improve reliability by increasing flexibility requirements at times when unconditional forecast-based requirements understate actual ramp uncertainty. In addition to the products just described (quantification of solar uncertainty, its translation into requirements for ramp capability product, and quantification of the benefits of more accurate ramp requirements), this project also developed a visualization system that alerts system operators of ramp and uncertainty conditions within the network based on solar forecasts. The system is called Resource Forecast and Ramp Visualization for Situational Awareness (RaVIS). These four products represent significant advances in the state-of-the-art of probabilistic solar forecasting, development of weather-informed reserve requirements, production costing methods for estimating the benefits of more accurate reserve requirements, and visualization of system status, respectively. Yet the products are also practical and can be immediately implemented, potentially enabling system operators to save millions of dollars in ramp product procurement costs per year.

Peak Load Management in Distribution Systems Using Legacy Utility Equipment and Distributed Energy Resources

The ability to perform peak load management in distribution systems has several benefits for utilities, including reduced demand charges and improved reliability, efficiency, and utilization of the network infrastructure. This paper demonstrates the coordinated operation of an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) and a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) to achieve peak load management using a realistic laboratory test bed. A commercial ADMS reduces the peak demand by reducing system voltages using a dynamic voltage regulation (DVR) application. A prototype DERMS-based on real-time optimal power flow-controls distributed battery energy storage systems to further reduce the feeder power. Results from the experiments conducted using a model of a real distribution feeder show that the coordinated operation of the ADMS and DERMS is effective in accomplishing peak load management.

Solar array switching power management

Solar array power switching concepts are explored for a 250 kWe manned LEO platform, a 50-250 kWe load for an orbit transfer vehicle (OTV), and an unmanned platform with a 50 kWe load in GEO. A solar array switching power management (SASPM) system is under study to satisfy the switching demands. Direct connections to arrays would be implemented for voltage regulations, power distribution, and the capability of reconfiguring the arrays to meet requirements. Mission characteristics that would require the power sources were explored. The LEO platform was projected to use a concentrator, have no reconfigurability, use 250 NiH2 batteries, supply 80-0 Vdc to an ion drive, and have a 20-30 yr life. Both GEO and OTV arrays were planar, would feature reconfigurability, and supply 800 Vdc to an ion drive. NiH2 batteries would be on the OTV, while the GEO spacecraft would use AgH2 cells. A block diagram of the basic switching configuration is presented.
