Holistic energy landscape management in 2D/3D heterojunction via molecular engineering for efficient perovskite solar cells

Constructing two-dimensional (2D) perovskite atop of 3D with energy landscape management is still a challenge in perovskite photovoltaics. Here, we report a strategy through designing a series of π-conjugated organic cations to construct stable 2D perovskites and to realize delicate energy level tunability at 2D/3D heterojunctions. As a result, the hole transfer energy barriers can be reduced both at heterojunctions and within 2D structures, and the preferable work function shift reduces charge accumulation at interface. Leveraging these insights and also benefitted from the superior interface contact between conjugated cations and poly(triarylamine) (PTAA) hole transporting layer, a solar cell with power conversion efficiency of 24.6% has been achieved, which is the highest among PTAA-based n-i-p devices to the best of our knowledge. The devices exhibit greatly enhanced stability and reproducibility. This approach is generic to several hole transporting materials, offering opportunities to realize high efficiency without using the unstable Spiro-OMeTAD.

Quantitative intramolecular fission in oligoacenes, materials, and methods of use thereof

The present invention provides soluble, stable singlet fission (SF) compounds, compositions, materials, methods of their use, and methods for their preparation that provide efficient intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) and multiple excitons. The SF compound may be a dimer, an oligomer, or a polymer of polyoligoacenes, where for example, the compound achieves a triplet yield reaching about 200% per absorbed photon. In this system, SF does not depend on intermolecular inter-actions. Instead, SF is an intrinsic property of the molecule and therefore occurs independent of intermolecular interactions. Singlet fission has the potential to significantly improve the photocurrent in single junction solar cells and thus raise the Shockley-Queisser power conversion efficiency limit from about 33% to about 46% or greater. Quantitative SF yield at room temperature has only been observed in crystalline solids or aggregates of higher acenes.

3,4‐Dicyanothiophene—a Versatile Building Block for Efficient Nonfullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract In this contribution, a versatile building block, 3,4‐dicyanothiophene (DCT), which possesses structural simplicity and synthetic accessibility for constructing high‐performance, low‐cost, wide‐bandgap conjugated polymers for use as donors in polymer solar cells (PSCs), is reported. A prototype polymer, PB3TCN‐C66, and its cyano‐free analogue polymer PB3T‐C66, are synthesized to evaluate the potential of using DCT in nonfullerene PSCs. A stronger aggregation property in solution, higher thermal transition temperatures with higher enthalpies, a larger dipole moment, higher relative dielectric constant, and more linear conformation are exhibited by PB3TCN‐C66. Solar cells employing IT‐4F as the electron acceptor offer power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.2% and 2.3% for PB3TCN‐C66 and PB3T‐C66, respectively. Morphological characterizations reveal that the PB3TCN‐C66:IT‐4F blend exhibits better π–π paracrystallinity, a contracted domain size, and higher phase purity, consistent with its higher molecular interaction parameter, derived from thermodynamic calculations. Moreover, PB3TCN‐C66 offers a higher open‐circuit voltage and reduced energy loss than most state‐of‐the‐art wide‐bandgap polymers, without the need of additional electron‐withdrawing substituents. Two additional polymers derived from DCT also demonstrate promising performance with a higher PCE of 13.4% being achieved. Thus, DCT represents a versatile and promising building block for constructing high‐performance, low‐cost, conjugated polymers for application in PSCs.

Sequential Deposition of Multicomponent Bulk Heterojunctions Increases Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Constructing tandem and multi-blend organic solar cells (OSCs) is an effective way to overcome the absorption limitations of conventional single-junction devices. However, these methods inevitably require tedious multilayer deposition or complicated morphology-optimization procedures. Herein, sequential deposition is utilized as an effective and simple method to fabricate multicomponent OSCs with a double-bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure of the active layer to further improve photovoltaic performance. Two efficient donor-acceptor pairs, D18-Cl:BTP-eC9 and PM6:L8-BO, are sequentially deposited to form the D18-Cl:BTP-eC9/PM6:L8-BO double-BHJ active layer. In these double-BHJ OSCs, light absorption is significantly improved, and optimal morphology is also retained without requiring a more complicated morphology optimization involved in quaternary blends. Compared to the quaternary blend devices, energy loss (E loss ) is also reduced by rationally matching each donor with an appropriate acceptor. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is improved from 18.25% for D18-Cl:BTP-eC9 and 18.69% for PM6:L8-BO based binary blend OSCs to 19.61% for the double-BHJ OSCs. In contrast, a D18-Cl:PM6:L8-BO:BTP-eC9 quaternary blend of OSCs exhibited a dramatically reduced PCE of 15.83%. Finally, these results demonstrate that a double-BHJ strategy, with a relatively simple processing procedure, can potentially enhance the device performance of OSCs and lead to more widespread use.

Benzotriazole‐Based Nonfused Ring Acceptors for Efficient and Thermally Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Nonfused ring acceptors (NFRAs) have attracted significant attention for nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their chemical tunability and facile synthesis. In this study, a benzotriazole‐based NFRA with chlorinated end groups (Triazole‐4Cl) is developed to realize highly efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs; an analogous NFRA with nonchlorinated end groups (Triazole‐H) is synthesized for comparison. Triazole‐4Cl film exhibits the high‐order packing structure and the near‐infrared absorption capability, which are advantageous in charge transport and light harvesting of the resulting OSCs. In particular, the strong crystalline behavior of Triazole‐4Cl results in enhanced self‐aggregation, leading to high charge carrier mobility. Owing to these properties, a PBDB‐T (polymer donor):Triazole‐4Cl OSC demonstrates a high short‐circuit current, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency (PCE = 10.46%), outperforming a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC (PCE = 7.65%). In addition, the thermal stability of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐4Cl OSC at an elevated temperature of 120 °C exceeds that of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC. This is mainly attributed to the significantly higher cold crystallization temperature of Triazole‐4Cl (205.9 °C). This work provides useful guidelines for the design of NFRAs to achieve efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs.

Polymeric Electron-Selective Contact for Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells with an Efficiency Exceeding 19%

Carrier-selective contacts have become a prominent path forward toward efficient crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaics. Among the proposed contacting materials, organic materials may offer simplified and low-cost processing compared with typical vacuum deposition techniques. In this paper, branched polyethylenimine (b-PEI) is presented as an electron-transport layer (ETL) for c-Si solar cells. The incorporation of a b-PEI interlayer between c-Si(n) and Al leads to a low contact resistivity of 24 mΩ cm 2 . A silicon heterojunction solar cell integrated with b-PEI is demonstrated achieving a power conversion efficiency of 19.4%, which improves the benchmark efficiency of a c-Si solar cell with an organic ETL. This electron selectivity of b-PEI is attributed to its Lewis basicity, i.e., electron-donating ability, promoting favorable band bending at the c-Si surface for electron transport. Moreover, several other Lewis base polymers perform as efficient ETLs in organic/c-Si hybrid devices, indicating Lewis basicity could be a guideline for future organic ETL design.

Supramolecular design principles in pseudohalides for high-performance perovskite solar mini modules

In this work, we reveal the role of non-covalent interactions, which are known to play important roles in supramolecular phenomena, in achieving efficient perovskite surface and grain boundary passivation. By using a series of pseudohalides, we find that trifluoroacetate (TFA - ) provides the strongest binding to iodide vacancies by means of non-covalent hydrogen bonding and dispersion interactions. By exploiting additional non-covalent dispersion and hydrophobic interactions in aromatic 3,3-diphenylpropylammonium (DPA + ), we present a dual-ion passivation strategy that not only minimizes the non-radiative recombination center and local chemical inhomogeneities but also induces preferentially oriented growth of α-FAPbI 3 lattice. Further, this leads to an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.63% with an exceptional open-circuit voltage of 1.191 V in a perovskite solar cell with a small area, while perovskite solar mini modules with aperture areas of 25 and 64cm 2 achieved PCE of 22.47% (quasi-steady-state [QSS]-certified 20.50%) and 20.88%, respectively, with outstanding stability under high-humidity conditions.

Iodine’s Wild Ride Leading to Photoinstability in Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Understanding processes that contribute to efficiency losses during long-term operation of perovskite solar cells is crucial for achieving operational stability. Although maximum power point tracking optimizes outdoor performance, it is not uncommon that devices are kept under open-circuit conditions during sunny hours. Under these conditions, charge carriers accumulate at the interfaces rather than flowing through the circuit. In the case of the MAPbI 3 /spiro-OMeTAD interface studied here, hole accumulation leads to formation of I2 and subsequent oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD. By employing in situ absorption measurements, we show that the decrease in power conversion efficiency follows the spiro-OMeTAD oxidation while operating the device under open-circuit conditions. In short-circuit conditions, where photogenerated charge carriers are extracted in the external circuit, the I 2 -induced oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD and the device instability are minimized. The photoinduced expulsion of iodine from MAPbI 3 into spiro-OMeTAD discussed in this work provides new insight into the photoinstability of perovskite solar cells.

Spontaneously supersaturated nucleation strategy for high reproducible and efficient perovskite solar cells

High-quality perovskite films are predominantly prepared by anti-solvent assisted spin-coating method. How- ever, small device size and narrow operation window limit their applications in practical and scalable production. Here, a spontaneously supersaturated nucleation strategy is developed to fabricate high-quality perovskite films without any antisolvents. The rapid precipitation behavior of the precursor solutions could be triggered by the volatilization of methylamine ethanol at the initial film formation stage, forming uniform and compact intermediate phase films. Mirror-like large area (10 cm × 10 cm) methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite films with micrometer-sized grains can be achieved by phase transition via annealing. The average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4% is achieved for 0.1 cm 2 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The 1 cm 2 device shows a PCE of 17.57% and retains 96.8% after aging for 39 days in the air with a relative humidity of 5–30%. The perovskite module based on the perovskite films prepared by our strategy exhibits a PCE of 13.13%. Here, the perovskite film fabrication method developed in this work shows high reproducibility of the fabrication process due to the spontaneous nucleation process. Meanwhile, it also exhibits significant potential in the application of scalable solution processing deposition techniques toward the commercialization of PSCs.

Tailoring the Intermediate Phase to Control Formation of γ‑CsPbI3 Films

Controlling the crystallization pathway of inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite is essential for achieving high efficiency and stability in optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a solvent-engineering strategy that combines an antisolvent process with vacuum treatment (AVT) to modulate evaporation dynamics of the precursor, guiding the formation of highly oriented (CH3)2NH2PbI3 (DMAPbI3) and Cs4PbI6 intermediate phases. Synchrotron and in situ analyses revealed correlations between intermediate orientation and γ-CsPbI3 crystallinity. This directional crystallization pathway promotes vertical alignment and grain enlargement in γ-CsPbI3 films, resulting in fewer voids, lower defect densities, and reduced tensile strain. Photovoltaic devices based on AVT-processed films achieved a power conversion efficiency of 18.47% with a fill factor of 83.14% and retained 101.9% of their initial efficiency after 526 h without encapsulation. This study first reports that the quality of DMAPbI3 and Cs4PbI6 intermediates, controlled by combination of antisolvent and vacuum treatment, plays a crucial role in achieving high-quality γ-CsPbI3 films.

Cold air quench control of local crystallization environment in fully air-processed carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) present a low-cost route to efficient photovoltaic technology. Gas quenching is an essential process commonly used for solvent extraction in scalable module fabrication using solution processes, but film quality remains highly sensitive to the localized environmental processing temperature, especially during intermediate phase transitions before perovskite film high temperature annealing. In this study, we introduce a cold air quench strategy to precisely control the local crystallization temperature that simultaneously promotes uniform crystallization and facilitates strain relaxation in fully air-processed C-PSCs. It is found that implementing dry air at 10 °C as the quenching gas yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.52 %, with preferential (110) orientation and reduced, homogenized in-plane strain. This newly developed technique of a cost-effective low temperature air quenching process also enhances carrier lifetime, reduces interface recombination, and improves charge extraction. Furthermore, this work presents cold air quenching as a scalable, economic method to control perovskite crystallization and strain in C-PSC fabrication, advancing the industrial viability of high-performance perovskite modules.

Selective Bidentate Coordination Reconstructs Residual PbI 2 to Homogenize Interfacial Energetics in Perovskite Solar Cells

Spatially heterogeneous interfacial energetics, often originating from residual lead iodide (PbI 2 ), represent a fundamental bottleneck to both the efficiency and operational stability of perovskite photovoltaics. Conventional PbI 2 passivation strategies based on monodentate ligands or highly polar solvents either interact weakly with PbI 2 or undesirably perturb the underlying three-dimensional perovskite lattice. Here, we report a diammonium bidentate strategy that selectively reconstructs residual PbI 2 into corner-sharing PbI 6 octahedra while preserving the bulk perovskite. Enabled by dual-site coordination, a newly designed thiophene-based bidentate ligand (MeXT) stabilizes PbI 6 units during passivation and establishes spatially homogeneous interfacial energetics. Perovskite solar cells incorporating MeXT achieve 26.19% power conversion efficiency and retain over 80% of their initial efficiency after 1000 h of continuous 1-sun illumination at 75 °C. This dual-anchor coordination passivation strategy establishes a general design principle for selectively treating residual PbI 2 and creating electronically coherent and operationally stable interfaces in perovskite photovoltaics.

Lamination of >21% Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells with Independent Process Control of Transport Layers and Interfaces

Transport layer and interface optimization is critical for improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) but is restricted by the conventional fabrication approach of sequential layer deposition. While the bottom transport layer is processed with minimum constraints, the narrow thermal and chemical stability window of the halide perovskite (HP) layer severely restricts the choice of top transport layer and its processing conditions. To overcome these limitations, we demonstrate lamination of HPs—where two transport layer-perovskite half-stacks are independently processed and diffusion-bonded at the HP-HP interface—as an alternative fabrication strategy that enables self-encapsulated solar cells. Power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of >21% are realized using cells that incorporate a novel transport layer combination along with dual-interface passivation via self-assembled monolayers, both of which are uniquely enabled by the lamination approach. This is the highest reported PCE for any laminated PSC encapsulated between glass substrates. We further show that this approach expands the processing window beyond traditional fabrication processes and is adaptable for different transport layer compositions. The laminated PSCs retained >75% of their initial PCE after 1000 h of 1-sun illumination at 40 °C in air using an all-inorganic transport layer configuration without additional encapsulation. Furthermore, a laminated 1 cm 2 device maintained a V oc of 1.16 V. Finally, the scalable lamination strategy in this study enables the implementation of new transport layers and interfacial engineering approaches for improving performance and stability.

Oriented nucleation in formamidinium perovskite for photovoltaics

The black phase of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) perovskite shows huge promise as an efficient photovoltaic, but it is not favoured energetically at room temperature, meaning that the undesirable yellow phases are always present alongside it during crystallization. This problem has made it difficult to formulate the fast crystallization process of perovskite and develop guidelines governing the formation of black-phase FAPbI 3 . Here, we use in situ monitoring of the perovskite crystallization process to report an oriented nucleation mechanism that can help to avoid the presence of undesirable phases and improve the performance of photovoltaic devices in different film-processing scenarios. The resulting device has a demonstrated power-conversion efficiency of 25.4% (certified 25.0%) and the module, which has an area of 27.83 cm 2 , has achieved an impressive certified aperture efficiency of 21.4%.

Post‐Annealing Treatment on Hydrothermally Grown Antimony Sulfoselenide Thin Films for Efficient Solar Cells

Herein, antimony sulfoselenide (Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 ) thin‐film solar cells are fabricated by a hydrothermal method followed by a post‐deposition annealing process at different temperatures and the impact of the annealing temperature on the morphological, structural, optoelectronic, and defect properties of the hydrothermally grown Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 films is investigated. It is found that a proper annealing temperature leads to high‐quality Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 films with large crystal grains, high crystallinity, preferred crystal orientation, smooth and uniform morphology, and reduced defect density. These results show that suppressing deep‐level defects is crucial to enhance solar cell performance. After optimizing the annealing process, Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 solar cells with an improved power conversion efficiency 2.04 to 8.48% are obtained.

Evaporated CdSe for Efficient Polycrystalline CdSeTe Thin-Film Solar Cells

Recent progress has shown that alloying cadmium telluride (CdTe) with cadmium selenide (CdSe) to create a CdSexTe1-x (CdSeTe) gradient region can significantly boost the performance of polycrystalline CdSeTe thin-film solar cells. However, improper CdSeTe alloying might introduce problematic band alignment and deleterious voids at the front interface, limiting the benefit maximization of this technique. Here, we show that the CdSe layers deposited by thermal evaporation result in CdSeTe cells with a higher performance than the sputtered CdSe. This is because evaporated CdSe can avoid the formation of voids at the front interface, producing improved front junction quality with suppressed front junction nonradiative recombination. The champion cell using evaporated CdSe demonstrated a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.7%, much higher than 18.1% in the cell using sputtered CdSe.

Hydrophobic Carbon Nanosheets as Passivation Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells with High Efficiency and Stability (Final Technical Report)

Hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites have continually demonstrated competitive advantages for photovoltaic applications due to their high light absorption coefficient, tunable bandgaps, ambipolar charge mobility and high tolerance of defects. However, there are many challenges yet to overcome to bring this technology to the market. For instance, bridging the ‘scaling gap’ and transitioning PSCs from a lab scale to an industrial scale is a serious challenge. This project developed a high stability and inexpensive perovskite solar cell (PSC) by incorporating hydrophobic carbon nanosheets as counter electrodes (CEs). We demonstrated that the hydrogenated carbon nanosheets with tunable hydrophobic properties as CEs can improve life-time stability of PSCs in operating conditions (i.e. humid air) while achieving impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE).

Physiochemical Machine Learning Models Predict Operational Lifetimes of CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Halide perovskites are promising photovoltaic (PV) materials with the potential to lower the cost of electricity and greatly expand the penetration of PV if they can demonstrate long-term stability under illumination in the presence of moisture and oxygen. The solar cell service lifetime as quantified by the T80 (the time required for the power conversion efficiency to drop to 80% of its starting value) is a useful metric to assess stability. The T80 for utility, commercial, or residential PV systems needs to be several decades in order to yield low-cost electricity, and thus it is not practical to directly measure the T80. It would be useful if T80 could be predicted from the initial dynamics of a solar cell’s performance, but until now no models have been developed to forecast T80. In this work, we report the development of machine learning models to predict T80 of ITO/NiOx/CH3NH3PbI3/C60/BCP/Ag solar cells operating at maximum power point under 1-sun equivalent photon flux in air at varying temperatures and relative humidities. Efficiency losses are driven by short-circuit current and fill factor, indicating that chemical decomposition of the perovskite is a major contributor to degradation. Spatial patterns evident from in situ dark field optical microscopy suggest that the electric field gradient at device edges plays a significant role in perovskite decomposition, along with photochemical reactions with O2 and H2O. Models are trained using a menu of features from three distinct categories: (i) features based on measurements of the initial rates of change of device parameters, (ii) features based on the ambient conditions during operation (temperature, & partial pressure of H2O), and (iii) features based on underlying physics and chemistry. We show that a theory-based physiochemical feature derived from a model of the chemical reaction kinetics of the rate of degradation of the CH3NH3PbI3 is particularly valuable for prediction. This physiochemical feature was selected as the first or second most dominant feature in the best performing models. With a dataset consisting of 45 accelerated degradation experiments with T80 that range over a factor of 30, the model predicts T80 with an accuracy of about 40% (|predicted T80 - observed T80| / observed T80) on samples not used in training. This hybrid ML approach should be effective when applied to other compositions, device architectures, and advanced packaging schemes.
