Feed System Design Considerations for Large Space Antenna Systems. Part 1: Multiple Apertures with Non-overlapping Feeds

A feed system design for large space antenna systems was considered. A multiple aperture system with nonoverlapping feeds is examined. Circular and quadrant aperture reflector radiation patterns are compared and the effect of adjacent aperture on radiation patterns of multiple aperture reflector antennas is illustrated. The following systems are examined: (1) feed design optimization for a multiple aperture reflector antenna; (2) radiation pattern for two quadrant reflector with optimized feed design; (3) multiple beam concept utliizing apertures and nonoverlapping feeds; (4) beam contours for two quadrant of multiple beam multiple aperture concept; (5) superposition of beams from two quadrants of multiple beam multiple aperture concent; (6)compensation for mislalignment of interleaved beams from two quadrants; and (7) beam quality improvement due to reorienting feed for offset reflector.

Feed System Design Considerations for Large Space Antenna Systems. Part 2: Single Aperture with Overlapping Feeds

Contiguous multiple beams are used to make use of the set of frequency bands at different beams at different geographical locations and achieve the most efficient use of precious frequency allocation. This is feasible only if the interference among cochannel beams is below some acceptable level, by carrier/interference (C/I) ratio. Individual beam patterns of very low sidelobes, which in turn necessitates narrow feed are required. A physically realizable solution to this problem entails either more than one reflector, more complicated optics, or breaking of each feed into a cluster of smaller elements, some of which would then be shared by adjacent beams. The latter, however, requires a complicated beamforming network (BFN) for the proper feeding of the elements. The feedpacking problem is not unique to reflector antennas and exists in lens type antennas as well. The BFN and associated problems are present in the phased array antennas and on a much larger scale. Poor scan capabilities are associated with reflector systems. The scan properties of offset fed reflector systems can be improved by choosing a very large focal length to parent reflector diameter ((F/Dp) ratio, which requires a longer boom to support the feed. In the case of reflectors with cluster feed arrangements, the scan capability for smaller F/Dp ratios is improved by proper adjustment of cluster element excitations. Such a system seems to be appropriate for up to 10 beamwidths scan. For a larger number of beams, systems with wider scan capabilities, such as phased arrays or phased array/reflector combinations, become more appealing.

Collar grids for intersecting geometric components within the Chimera overlapped grid scheme

A method for overcoming problems with using the Chimera overset grid scheme in the region of intersecting geometry components is presented. A 'collar grid' resolves the intersection region and provides communication between the component grids. This approach is validated by comparing computed and experimental data for a flow about a wing/body configuration. Application of the collar grid scheme to the Orbiter fuselage and vertical tail intersection in a computation of the full Space Shuttle launch vehicle demonstrates its usefulness for simulation of flow about complex aerospace vehicles.

An accelerated lambda iteration method for multilevel radiative transfer. I - Non-overlapping lines with background continuum

A method is presented for solving multilevel transfer problems when nonoverlapping lines and background continuum are present and active continuum transfer is absent. An approximate lambda operator is employed to derive linear, 'preconditioned', statistical-equilibrium equations. A method is described for finding the diagonal elements of the 'true' numerical lambda operator, and therefore for obtaining the coefficients of the equations. Iterations of the preconditioned equations, in conjunction with the transfer equation's formal solution, are used to solve linear equations. Some multilevel problems are considered, including an eleven-level neutral helium atom. Diagonal and tridiagonal approximate lambda operators are utilized in the problems to examine the convergence properties of the method, and it is found to be effective for the line transfer problems.

Effects of oscillatory speed and mutual overlap on the tribological behavior of PTFE and selected PTFE-based self-lubricating composites

The wear reducing actions of bronze, graphic powder and discontinuous glass fiber within a PTFE matrix have been demonstrated in oscillatory contact with stainless steel, at two different amplitudes, over a range of speeds. The secondary effects on the friction of the PTFE have also been investigated. The effects of oscillation amplitude on frictional surface morphology have been observed for these composites. The friction and wear of the unfilled PTFE matrix were both found to increase as speed increased, with wear going through a transition from a low- to high-rate regime. The speed at which this transition occurs increases with decreasing oscillatory amplitude.

Dual-Ion-Trap Frequency Standards With Overlapping Cycles

Proposed scheme for enhancing performances of atomic frequency-standard apparatuses calls for two or more ion traps per apparatus interrogated in alternation by radio-frequency pulses. Provides nearly constant feedback gain, thereby providing nearly constant corrections for fluctuations in frequency of local oscillator. Degradation of performance by fluctuations in local oscillators reduced.

Grid adaption using Chimera composite overlapping meshes

The objective of this paper is to perform grid adaptation using composite over-lapping meshes in regions of large gradient to capture the salient features accurately during computation. The Chimera grid scheme, a multiple overset mesh technique, is used in combination with a Navier-Stokes solver. The numerical solution is first converged to a steady state based on an initial coarse mesh. Solution-adaptive enhancement is then performed by using a secondary fine grid system which oversets on top of the base grid in the high-gradient region, but without requiring the mesh boundaries to join in any special way. Communications through boundary interfaces between those separated grids are carried out using tri-linear interpolation. Applications to the Euler equations for shock reflections and to a shock wave/boundary layer interaction problem are tested. With the present method, the salient features are well resolved.

Dual Overlapping, Weighted Preaveragers

Improved technique incorporated into digital processing of received radio signals that bear digital data reduces bandwidth of incoming noise when receiver operated over broad range of potential signal bandwidths. Technique in question is updated version of older preaveraging technique; two modifications decrease vulnerability to interference from adjacent channels.

High-speed Viterbi decoding with overlapping code sequences

The Viterbi Algorithm for decoding convolutional codes and Trellis Coded Modulation is suited to VLSI implementation but contains a feedback loop which limits the speed of pipelined architecture. The feedback loop is circumvented by decoding independent sequences simultaneously, resulting in a 5-9 fold speed-up with a two-fold hardware expansion.

Cooling the Martian atmosphere: The spectral overlap of the C02 15 micrometers band and dust

Careful consideration must be given to the simultaneous treatment of the radiative transfer of the CO2 15 micron band and dust calculations for the Martian winter polar region show that a simple sum of separately calculated CO2 cooling rates and dust cooling rates can easily result a 30 percent error in the net cooling particularly near the surface. CO2 and dust hinder each others ability to cool the atmosphere. Even during periods of low dust opacity, dust still reduces the efficacy of CO2 at cooling the atmosphere. At the other extreme, when dust storms occur, CO2 still significantly impedes the ability of dust to cool the atmosphere. Hence, both CO2 and dust must be considered in radiative transfer models.
