Photothermal degradation of ethylene/vinylacetate copolymer

Photothermal degradation studies were conducted on a 'stabilized' formulation of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) in the temperature range 25-105 C under three different oxygen environments (in open air, with limited access to O2, and in a dark closed stagnant oven). These studies were performed in order to evaluate the utility of EVA as an encapsulation material for photovoltaic modules. Results showed that at low temperature (25 C), slow photooxidation of the polymer occurred via electronic energy transfer involving the UV absorber incorporated in the polymer. However, no changes in the physical properties of the bulk polymer were detected up to 1500 hours of irradiation. At elevated temperatures, leaching and evaporation of the additives occurred, which ultimately resulted in the chemical crosslinking of the copolymer and the formation of volatile photoproducts such as acetic acid.

An investigation into the injection molding of PMR-15 polyimide

The chemorheological behavior of the PRM-15 molding compounds were characterized, the range of suitable processing parameters for injection molding in a reciprocating screw injection molding machine was determined, and the effects of the injection molding processing parameters on the mechanical properties of molded PMR-15 parts were studied. The apparatus and procedures for measuring viscosity and for determining the physical response of the material during heating are described. Results show that capillary rheometry can be effectively used with thermosets if the equipment is designed to overcome some of the inherent problems of these materials. A uniform temperature was provided in the barrel by using a circulating hot oil system. Standard capillary rheometry methods can provide the dependence of thermoset apparent viscosity on shear rate, temperature, and time. Process conditions resulting in complete imidization should be carefully defined. Specification of controlled oven temperature is inadequate and can result in incomplete imidization. For completely imidized PMR-15 heat at 15 C/min melt flow without gas evolution occurs in the temperature range of 325 C to 400 C.

Temperature stability of transit time delay for a single-mode fibre in a loose tube cable

The effect of temperature on the transit-time delay of a loose-tube-type single-mode optical-fiber cable is investigated experimentally. A 1058-m length of cable was placed loosely coiled in an oven and used to connect a 820-nm single-mode laser diode to a high-speed avalanche-photodiode detector feeding a vector voltmeter; the signal was provided by a high-stability frequency-synthesized generator. Measurements were made every 2 C from -50 to 60 C and compared to those obtained with a 200-m lacquered bare fiber. The phase change of both fibers varied with temperature at a positive slope of 6-7 ppm/C. This value is significantly better than those reported for other cable types, suggesting the application of loose-fiber cables to long-haul gigabit digital transmissions or precision time-base distribution for VLBI.

Thermal aging of graphite/polyimide composites

Celion 6000/PMR-15, Celion 6000/LARC-160, and Celion 6000/RK-99 graphite/polyimides were aged in circulating air ovens at temperatures of 202, 232, 260, and 288 C for various times, up to 15,000 h. Three unidirectional specimens were studied: short-beam-shear (SBS), flexure, and 153-mm square panels. The interior region of the square panels exhibited little or no property degradation. Based on the individually aged SBS specimen results, the relative thermal-oxidative stability from highest to lowest is as follows: PMR-15, LARC-160, RK-99, Celion 6000/PMR-15 and Celion 6000/LARC-160 laminates retained at least 80 percent of their initial flexural strengths for the duration of aging at each temperature. Celion 6000/RK-99 laminates exhibited a 20 to 50 percent loss of flexural strength at all aging temperatures. All three graphite/polyimide laminate materials degraded preferentially at the specimen edge perpendicular to the fibers.

Long-term thermal aging of 2 graphite-polyimide composite materials

Two graphite/polyimide composite materials were aged in circulating air ovens at temperatures 204 C, 232 C, 260 C, and 288 C for various times up to 25000 hours. The composites were: (1) Celanese Celion 6000 graphite fiber and PMR-15 polyimide resin (Celion/PMR-15) and (2) Celion 6000 graphite fiber and LARC-160 polyimide resin (Celion/LARC-160). Three unidirectional specimen geometries were studied: short beam shear (SBS) specimens, flexure specimens, and 153 mm square panels. The interior regions of the square panels exhibited only minor property degradation. The individually aged SBS and flexure specimens exhibited large reductions in strengths after aging. Both laminate materials cracked and degraded preferentially at the specimen edge perpendicular to the fibers.

The Rubidium-Crystal Oscillator Hybrid Development Program

The rubidium-crystal oscillator hybrid (RbXO) will make precise time available to systems that lack the power required by atomic frequency standards. The RbXO consists of two subassemblies in separate enclosures. One contains a small rubidium frequency standard (RFS) without its internal oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO), plus interface circuits. The second contains a low-power OCXO, and additional interface circuits. The OCXO is on continuously. Periodically, e.g., once a week, the user system applies power to the RFS. After the few necessary for the warmup of the RFS, the interface circuits adjust the frequency of the OCXO to the RFS reference, then shut off the RFS. The OCXO enclosure is separable from the RFS enclosure so that manpacks will be able to operate with minimum size, weight, and power consumption, while having the accuracy of the RFS for the duration of a mission. A prototype RbXO's RFS has operated successfully for 4200 on-off cycles. Parallel efforts on a Phase 2 RbXO development are in progress. Two sources for the RbXO are scheduled to be available during 1986.

New features of different frequency generating systems due to the use of electrodeless rigidly mounted VBA quartz crystal resonator

The BVA 5 MHz crystal equipped frequency sources exhibit a new blend of performances such as 10 to 11 daily stability, 5x10-13 short term stability (1 to 30 s time intervals) and close to the carrier low phase noise (1 Hz : -120 dBc, 10 Hz : -140 dBc), whereby retaining the customary crystal oscillator benefits of small volume, high reliability and low price, as opposed to more sophisticated frequency generators which would be required to achieve comparable performances. Examples illustrating the impact of the Oscilloquartz BVA oven-controlled crystal oscillator in different frequency generating systems are presented: cesium frequency standards; hydrogen frequency standard; a precision distribution sub-system for satellite ground stations; and high hierarchy exchanges of digital networks, synchronized by the master-slave method are discussed.

Impact properties of rubber-modified epoxy resin-graphite-fiber composites

To improve the impact resistance of graphite-fiber composites, a commercial and an experimental epoxy resin were modified with liquid reactive rubber and a brominated epoxy resin. The commercial epoxy was a tetrafunctional resin, and the experimental epoxy was a trifunctional resin. The reactive rubber was a carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The rubber content was varied from 0 to 25 percent (wt). The brominated epoxy resin was used at Br levels of 4, 19, and 35 percent of the resin. Composites were prepared with woven graphite cloth reinforcement. The composites were evaluated by using flexural strength in the dry state and an elevated temperature after saturation with water. The impact properties were determined by measuring shear strength after falling-ball impact and instrumented impact. The rubber-modified, trifunctional resin exhibited better properties, when tested in hot-wet conditions in a heated oven at 366 K (after boiling the material for 2 h in demineralized water), than the tetrafunctional resin. Improved impact resistance was observed with the addition of the reactive rubber to the epoxy resin. Further improvement was observed with the addition of the brominated epoxy resin.

Scaling studies of solar pumped lasers

A progress report of scaling studies of solar pumped lasers is presented. Conversion of blackbody radiation into laser light has been demonstrated in this study. Parametric studies of the variation of laser mixture composition and laser gas temperature were carried out for CO2 and N2O gases. Theoretical analysis and modeling of the system have been performed. Reasonable agreement between predictions in the parameter variation and the experimental results have been obtained. Almost 200 mW of laser output at 10.6 micron was achieved by placing a small sapphire laser tube inside an oven at 1500 K the tube was filled with CO2 laser gas mixture and cooled by longitudinal nitrogen gas flow.
