An experimental study of nonlinear dynamic system identification

A technique for robust identification of nonlinear dynamic systems is developed and illustrated using both simulations and analog experiments. The technique is based on the Minimum Model Error optimal estimation approach. A detailed literature review is included in which fundamental differences between the current approach and previous work is described. The most significant feature of the current work is the ability to identify nonlinear dynamic systems without prior assumptions regarding the form of the nonlinearities, in constrast to existing nonlinear identification approaches which usually require detailed assumptions of the nonlinearities. The example illustrations indicate that the method is robust with respect to prior ignorance of the model, and with respect to measurement noise, measurement frequency, and measurement record length.

Pfaffian systems and feedback linearization/obstructions

The concept of Cartan-Vessiot filtered Lie algebra/module is defined in terms of previous feedback linearizations constructed through canonical forms of Pfaffian systems associated with nonlinear systems. Nonlinearization/Cartan-Vessiot algebras are regarded as deformations of linear ones. It is shown how certain problems of interest in nonlinear system theory translate over to algebraic problems involving this sort of algebraic structure.

Experimental Demonstration of a Two-Dimensional Nonlinear Integrable System in a Particle Accelerator

A two-dimensional nonlinear integrable system was experimentally demonstrated at the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator. The system was implemented by inserting a special nonlinear magnet in a conventional accelerator lattice. We characterized the system by measuring lifetimes, transverse profiles and transverse oscillation frequencies of the 150-MeV electron beam as a function of the strength of the nonlinear insert. The measured shift of the working point and the amplitude-dependent detuning were consistent with theoretical predictions. We also observed the predicted bifurcation of the stable closed orbit. A striking consequence of the system's implementation was the possibility to operate the storage ring with integer tunes without lifetime degradation. This research opens up novel ways to design particle accelerators and to stabilize particle beams.

Backward differentiation approximations of nonlinear differential/algebraic systems

Finite-difference approximations of dynamical systems modeled by nonlinear, semiexplicit, differential/algebraic equations are analyzed. Convergence for the backward differentiation method is proved for index two and index three problems when the numerical initial values obey certain constraints. The appropriate asymptotic convergence rates and the leading error terms are determined.

Recursive identification and tracking of parameters for linear and nonlinear multivariable systems

The problem of identifying constant and variable parameters in multi-input, multi-output, linear and nonlinear systems is considered, using the maximum likelihood approach. An iterative algorithm, leading to recursive identification and tracking of the unknown parameters and the noise covariance matrix, is developed. Agile tracking, and accurate and unbiased identified parameters are obtained. Necessary conditions for a globally, asymptotically stable identification process are provided; the conditions proved to be useful and efficient. Among different cases studied, the stability derivatives of an aircraft were identified and some of the results are shown as examples.

Fast Fourier transform analysis of rotor-bearing systems

Nonlinear transient analysis of rotor-bearing systems is becoming increasingly important in the analysis of modern-day rotating machinery to model such phenomena as oil film whirl. This paper develops an analysis technique incorporating modal analysis and fast Fourier transform techniques to analyze rotors with residual shaft bow and realistic nonlinear bearings. The technique is demonstrated on single-mass and three-mass rotor examples. Comparisons of the theoretical results with experimental data give excellent agreement.

A parallel iterative solution method for systems of nonlinear hyperbolic equations

An iterative algorithm suitable for the solution of a system of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differentiation equations in multiple dimensions is discussed. Current numerical methods for systems of nonlinear PDEs have limited parallelism due to strong coupling between the equations. This method decouples the PDEs by linearizing the convention coefficient for a space-time domain. This provides large grain parallelism. The linearization also allows the treatment of some terms in the equations as source terms, providing more freedom to choose from a wider variety of numerical methods. Smaller grain parallelism may be exploited within the solves for each equation. Thus, the method has potential for parallelism at several levels.

An experimental study of nonlinear dynamic system identification

A technique based on the Minimum Model Error optimal estimation approach is employed for robust identification of a nonlinear dynamic system. A simple harmonic oscillator with quadratic position feedback was simulated on an analog computer. With the aid of analog measurements and an assumed linear model, the Minimum Model Error Algorithm accurately identifies the quadratic nonlinearity. The tests demonstrate that the method is robust with respect to prior ignorance of the nonlinear system model and with respect to measurement record length, regardless of initial conditions.

Quasi-Linear Parameter Varying Representation of General Aircraft Dynamics Over Non-Trim Region

For applying linear parameter varying (LPV) control synthesis and analysis to a nonlinear system, it is required that a nonlinear system be represented in the form of an LPV model. In this paper, a new representation method is developed to construct an LPV model from a nonlinear mathematical model without the restriction that an operating point must be in the neighborhood of equilibrium points. An LPV model constructed by the new method preserves local stabilities of the original nonlinear system at "frozen" scheduling parameters and also represents the original nonlinear dynamics of a system over a non-trim region. An LPV model of the motion of FASER (Free-flying Aircraft for Subscale Experimental Research) is constructed by the new method.
