Baseline tests of the power-train electric delivery van

Vehicle maximum speed, range at constant speed, range over stop-and-go driving schedules, maximum acceleration, gradeability, gradeability limit, road energy consumption, road power, indicated energy consumption, braking capability, battery charger efficiency, and battery characteristics were determined for a modified utility van powered by sixteen 6-volt batteries connected in series. A chopper controller actuated by a foot accelerator pedal changes the voltage applied to the 22-kilowatt (30-hp) series-wound drive motor. In addition to the conventional hydraulic braking system, the vehicle has hydraulic regenerative braking. Cycle tests and acceleration tests were conducted with and without hydraulic regeneration.

Tread drum for animals

A device for exercising animals such as primates is described, which includes a cylindrical housing mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis of revolution and has a cylindrical treadway portion on which the animal treads while the drum is rotated by means of a motorized drive. The treadway portion of the drum includes an electrode structure with sectors being independently energizable by means of a commutator and source of potential so that an electrical shock station is created behind a running-in-place station on the moving treadway. In this manner, if the animal should fall behind its running-in-place station, it may be shocked by treading on the energized electrode structure. One end of the tread drum comprises a transparent wall for unobstructed viewing of the animal being exercised.

A deployable .015 inch diameter wire antenna

This mechanism was developed to dispense a small diameter wire which serves as a receiving antenna for electric field measurements on an Earth orbiting satellite. The antenna is deployed radially from a spinning satellite. A brushless dc motor drives a storage spool to dispense the wire at a controlled rate. Centrifugal force, acting on a mass attached to the end of the wire, keeps the wire in the radial position. The mechanism design, testing, and performance characteristics are discussed. Finally, operational data of the mechanism while in orbit are presented.

Scientific and technical applications of a tethered satellite system

A Shuttle-borne tether system capable of deploying a tether to radial distances as great as 100 km was described by Rupp and Laue (1978). The system as discussed by Rupp and Laue would have a total mass of 700 kg and would be mounted on one Shuttle pallet. It would consist of a tether reel mechanism complete with a servo drive motor and control sensors, a boom with docking probe used for initial deployment and subsequent retrieval, some type of satellite weighing 175 kg, up to 100 km of synthetic or metallic tether approximately 1 mm in diameter, a digital control computer, and a control and display panel on the Orbiter aft flight deck for crew operation. The primary use of a tether system for geological applications would be in the measurement of those magnetic and gravitational fields associated with geological structures. The major appeal in connection with atmospheric applications is the system's ability to extend instrumentation down into the lower thermosphere and possibly the mesosphere.

Focal plane transport assembly controls for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory X-ray telescope

The High Energy Astronomy Observatory - Mission B (HEAO-B) is a satellite observatory for the purpose of performing a detailed X-ray survey of the celestial sphere. Measurements will be made of stellar radiation in the range of 0.2 to 20 keV. The central part of the Observatory is an X-ray telescope, into the focus of which a variety of imaging instruments and spectrographs may be introduced. The telescope has a resolution of about 1 arc second, so that the instruments must be placed with extreme precision. This is obtained by a mechanical system of toggles and stops and a motor drive system controlled by a position sensing potentiometer with a resolution of about 1.5 degrees

Mechanisms of UK radiometers flown on Nimbus 5 and 6 with particular reference to bearings, pivots and lubrication

The mechanisms incorporated in the vertical sounding infrared radiometry experiments which were launched on Nimbus 5 in 1972 and on Nimbus 6 in 1975 are discussed. Both use dry lubricants. The Nimbus 5 radiometer includes a rotating chopper driven via a carbon fiber-acetal resin gearwheel. The driving motor runs at 2000 rpm and has completed over 7 x 10 to the 9th power revolutions. Four gear driven filter wheels powered by stepper motors have each completed 2 x 10 to the 8th power changes. The input calibration mirror mechanism and its field of view compensation mechanisms are also described. All 25 ball races used in the experiment are of the film transfer type. The Nimbus 6 radiometer includes two cells. Each contains a piston supported on diaphragm springs and driven electromagnetically. The pistons are 6 cm in diameter with a stroke of 1 cm and are driven at their mechanical resonant frequency of approx. 15 Hz. The calibrating mirrors rotate periodically to view a target. The support pivots are synthetic sapphire ring stones with separate end thrust stones. The problems of mounting these stones to withstand vibration loads is described.

A laboratory facility for electric vehicle propulsion system testing

The road load simulator facility located at the NASA Lewis Research Center enables a propulsion system or any of its components to be evaluated under a realistic vehicle inertia and road loads. The load is applied to the system under test according to the road load equation: F(net)=K1F1+K2F2V+K3 sq V+K4(dv/dt)+K5 sin theta. The coefficient of each term in the equation can be varied over a wide range with vehicle inertial representative of vehicles up to 7500 pounds simulated by means of flywheels. The required torque is applied by the flywheels, a hydroviscous absorber and clutch, and a drive motor integrated by a closed loop control system to produce a smooth, continuous load up to 150 horsepower.

Design and operation of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter ultraviolet spectrometer

The University of Colorado's ultraviolet spectrometer instrument carried on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft is a 125-mm f/5 Ebert-Fastie design with a 250-mm Cassegrain telescope. The instrument has extensive logic to control the grating motor drive and to adapt the basic spectrometer to the constraints and opportunities of the mission. Success has been achieved in reconciling the conflicting requirements of spectroscopic, limb profile, and imaging observations. A description of the instrument operating techniques is given together with representative results of all three types.

Surface temperatures and glassy state investigations in tribology, part 4

Measurements were made of the limiting shear stress for two naphthenic oils of differing molecular weight and three blends of the lower molecular weight oil and polyalkylmethacrylate polymers of differing molecular weight. The two base oils reached the same limiting shear stress for the same temperature and pressure. This was also true for all the polymer solutions although the polymer reduced the limiting shear stress by about 15 percent. It is shown that limiting stress is more a function of material type than viscosity or molecular weight. A new falling body viscometer was constructed to operate to 230 C and 0.6 GPa. Another viscometer was constructed to extend the pressure range to 1.1 GPa. A concentrated contact simulator was developed which allows recording of the traction force while the slide-roll ratio is continuously varied and the rolling speed is maintained essentially constant by a single drive motor. The configuration is that of a crowned roller against a disk. Measurement of lubricant minimum film thickness of elliptical EHD contacts of various aspect ratios were made by optical interferometry. The data collected were used to evaluate the Hamrock and Dowson minimum film thickness model over a range of contract ellipticity ratio where the major axis of the contact ellipse was aligned both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of motion. A statistical analysis of the measured film thickness data showed that on the average the experimental data were 30 percent greater than the film thickness predicted by the model. Preliminary development of the application of a scanning infrared radiation system to a tribo-system was completed.

A study of poultry processing plant noise control techniques

A number of techniques can be used to reduce noise in poultry processing plants. In general, covering the ceiling with a noise-absorbing medium is a practical first step. Once the reflected noise levels are abated, treatment of specific identifiable noise courses can take place. The development, flammability, and mechanical properties of acoustic panels to be vertically suspended from the ceiling are discussed as well as the covers need to comply with USDA cleanability requirements. The isolation of drive motors and pumps from large expansive areas, the muffling of pneumatic devices, and the insulation of ice chutes are methods of source quieting. Proper maintenance of machinery and vibration monitoring are also needed to reduce hearing damage risk and to improve worker productivity and employee/supervisor relations.

Transport Control for High-Density Digital Recorder

Tape capstan drive motor speed controlled by phase-locked loop to keep data rate off of tape compatible with demand clock rate preventing deskewbuffer overflow or underflow. Immunity to speed perturbations caused by data dropouts is obtained by switching to different data-channel reference signal whenever dropout is detected by frame synchronizer in channel currently in use. Desired tape speed is selected by changing frequency of demand rate clock and changing divisor N in programable divider.

Laser velocimeter stand-alone controller

A distributed microprocessor network has been developed to position a laser-based velocity measurement package. Designed primarily for use inside the Ames 40 x 80-foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel, the instrument assembly is remotely operated. The mechanical system is reconfigurable for other test environments which necessitates an adaptive control approach. Three stepper motor drives provide two-dimensional positioning of the sampling point over 200/sq m of the test section, with a 5-mm resolution. Real-time multiprocessing provides fast response, fault detection, and parametric data acquisition. Manual tests are run from a dedicated control panel and automated tests are accomplished via an I.E.E.E 488 interface. The design approach and the progress to date are discussed.

Automatic weld torch guidance control system

A highly reliable, fully digital, closed circuit television optical, type automatic weld seam tracking control system was developed. This automatic tracking equipment is used to reduce weld tooling costs and increase overall automatic welding reliability. The system utilizes a charge injection device digital camera which as 60,512 inidividual pixels as the light sensing elements. Through conventional scanning means, each pixel in the focal plane is sequentially scanned, the light level signal digitized, and an 8-bit word transmitted to scratch pad memory. From memory, the microprocessor performs an analysis of the digital signal and computes the tracking error. Lastly, the corrective signal is transmitted to a cross seam actuator digital drive motor controller to complete the closed loop, feedback, tracking system. This weld seam tracking control system is capable of a tracking accuracy of + or - 0.2 mm, or better. As configured, the system is applicable to square butt, V-groove, and lap joint weldments.
