Astrophysical materials science: Theory

Research papers of the discoveries and work carried out over the past six or so years are presented. Hydrogen and helium constitute by far the most abundant of the elements and it is no accident that the research has focussed heavily on these elements in their condensed forms, both as pure substances and in mixtures. The research has combined the fundamental with the pragmatic.

Material science and solid state physics studies with positive muon spin precession

The hyperfine field on the muon, B sub hf, at interstitial sites in dilute Fe(Al) alloys was measured for four different concentrations of Al and as a function of temperature by the muon spin rotation method. The magnitude of B sub hf, which is negative, decreases at rates ranging from 0.09 + or - 0.03% per at.% Al at 200 K to an asymptotic limit of 0.35 + or - far above 440 K. This behavior shows that sites near the Al impurity are weakly repulsive to the muon, with an interaction potential of 13 + or - 3 meV. In order to fit the temperature dependence of the hyperfine field, it is necessary to hypothesize the existence of a small concentration of unidentified defects, possibly dislocations, which are attractive to the muon. Although the Al impurity acts as a non-magnetic hole in the Fe lattice, the observed decrease in B sub hf is only 35% of the decrease in the bulk magnetization. It is concluded that B sub hf is determined mainly by the enhanced screening of conduction electrons in Fe and Fe(Al). Since the influence of the Al impurity on the neighboring Fe monents is very small, most of the change in B sub hf is therefore attributed to the increase in conduction electron polarization of the Al impurity.

Drops and Bubble in Materials Science

The formation of extended p-n junctions in semiconductors by drop migration, mechanisms and morphologies of migrating drops and bubbles in solids and nucleation and corrections to the Volmer-Weber equations are discussed. Bubble shrinkage in the processing of glass, the formation of glass microshells as laser-fusion targets, and radiation-induced voids in nuclear reactors were examined.

Ultrapressure materials science

Three active areas of research at ultra pressure are pursued, i.e., diffraction studies with the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), band gap and absorption edge effects, indentor-anvil experiments and theory and research to attain higher pressures. The range over which X-ray diffraction data and absorption edge data are obtained is extended to 700 kbars. Using the indentor technique pressures of 2.1 Mbars are obtained. Research results and methods are discussed.

An advanced material science payload for GAS

The aim of the experiments is to study solidification phenomena in metal alloys. Especially the dendritic growth and the effect of the absence of natural convection are of particular interest for the scientist, professor Hasse Fredriksson at the Royal Institute of Technology (RIT) in Stockholm. The results from the flight processed samples will be compared with results from a lot of earth-processed samples in order to investigate the influence of the natural convection on the solidification process.

Astrophysical materials science: Theory

A method of structural expansions for use in determining the equation of state of metallic hydrogen (and indeed other metals) up to the 4th order in the perturbation theory was developed. The electrical and thermal transport properties of the planetary interior of Jupiter were calculated. The nature of the interaction between molecules at short range and the importance of multicenter terms in arriving at an adequate description of the thermodynamic functions of condensed molecular hydrogen were also investigated.

The use of computers in a materials science laboratory

The objective is to make available a method of easily recording the microstructure of a sample by means of a computer. The method requires a minimum investment and little or no instruction on the operation of a computer. An outline of the setup involving a black and white TV camera, a digitizer control box, a metallurgical microscope and a computer screen, printer, and keyboard is shown.
