Universal programmable logic gate and routing method

An universal and programmable logic gate based on G.sup.4-FET technology is disclosed, leading to the design of more efficient logic circuits. A new full adder design based on the G.sup.4-FET is also presented. The G.sup.4-FET can also function as a unique router device offering coplanar crossing of signal paths that are isolated and perpendicular to one another. This has the potential of overcoming major limitations in VLSI design where complex interconnection schemes have become increasingly problematic.

A Safety Conundrum Illustrated: Logic, Mathematics, and Science Are Not Enough

In an ideal world, conversations about whether a particular system is safe, or whether a particular method or tool enhances safety, would be emotion-free discussions concentrating on the level of safety required, available evidence, and coherent logical, mathematical, or scientific arguments based on that evidence. In the real world, discussions about safety are often not emotion-free. Political and economic arguments may play a bigger role than logical, mathematical, and scientific arguments, and psychological factors may be as important, or even more important, than purely technical factors. This paper illustrates the conundrum that can result from this clash of the ideal and the real by means of an imagined conversation among a collection of fictional characters representing various types of people who may be participating in a safety discussion.

Simulation and Verification of Synchronous Set Relations in Rewriting Logic

This paper presents a mathematical foundation and a rewriting logic infrastructure for the execution and property veri cation of synchronous set relations. The mathematical foundation is given in the language of abstract set relations. The infrastructure consists of an ordersorted rewrite theory in Maude, a rewriting logic system, that enables the synchronous execution of a set relation provided by the user. By using the infrastructure, existing algorithm veri cation techniques already available in Maude for traditional asynchronous rewriting, such as reachability analysis and model checking, are automatically available to synchronous set rewriting. The use of the infrastructure is illustrated with an executable operational semantics of a simple synchronous language and the veri cation of temporal properties of a synchronous system.

Automated Translation of Safety Critical Application Software Specifications into PLC Ladder Logic

The numerous benefits of automatic application code generation are widely accepted within the software engineering community. A few of these benefits include raising the abstraction level of application programming, shorter product development time, lower maintenance costs, and increased code quality and consistency. Surprisingly, code generation concepts have not yet found wide acceptance and use in the field of programmable logic controller (PLC) software development. Software engineers at the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) recognized the need for PLC code generation while developing their new ground checkout and launch processing system. They developed a process and a prototype software tool that automatically translates a high-level representation or specification of safety critical application software into ladder logic that executes on a PLC. This process and tool are expected to increase the reliability of the PLC code over that which is written manually, and may even lower life-cycle costs and shorten the development schedule of the new control system at KSC. This paper examines the problem domain and discusses the process and software tool that were prototyped by the KSC software engineers.

DejaVu: A Monitoring Tool for First-Order Temporal Logic

Runtime Verification (rv) is aimed at analyzing individual execution traces and temporal behaviors observed from running programs and systems. Its traditional purpose is in detecting the lack of conformance with respect to a formal specification. While very early rv systems were based on specifications given in some form of propositional temporal logic, recent efforts have focused on monitoring so-called parametric specifications over events that carry data. Since a monitor for such specifications has to store observed data, the challenge is to have an efficient representation and manipulation of data. The fundamental problem is that the actual values of the data are not necessarily bounded or provided in advance. In this paper, we describe our monitoring tool, DejaVu, which implements our algorithm [HPU17] for monitoring first-order past linear-time temporal logic over a sequence of events that carry data. We propose the use of Binary Decision Diagrams (bdds) [Bry86] for representing and manipulating sets of observed data since (1) bdds provide highly compact representations, (2) operations over bdds, in particular complementation, are very efficient, and (3) the monitor construction for the propositional case shown in [HR02] naturally extends to bdds. Our experiments show a substantial improvement in performance compared to a related tool.

Logical shadow tomography: Efficient estimation of error-mitigated observables

We introduce a technique to estimate error-mitigated expectation values on noisy quantum computers. Our technique performs shadow tomography on a logical state to produce a memory-efficient classical reconstruction of the noisy density matrix. Using efficient classical post-processing, one can mitigate errors by projecting into the codespace as in subspace expansion and taking powers of the density matrix as in virtual distillation. Relative to subspace expansion which requires Ω (2^((n-1)k) samples to estimate a Pauli observable with an [[n; k]] stabilizer code, our technique requires only Ө(2^k) samples. Relative to virtual distillation, our technique can compute powers of the density matrix without implementing additional copies of quantum states the quantum computer. We present numerical results using logical states encoded with up to sixty physical qubits and show fast convergence to error-free expectation values with only 10^5 samples under 1% depolarizing noise.

Comprehension of Spatial Constraints by Neural Logic Learning from a Single RGB-D Scan

Autonomous industrial assembly relies on the precise measurement of spatial constraints as designed by computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks. This paper proposes a framework for an intelligent industrial robot to understand the spatial constraints for model assembly. An extended generative adversary network (GAN) with a 3D long short-term memory (LSTM) network was designed to composite 3D point clouds from a single RGB-D scan. The spatial constraints of the segmented point clouds are identified by a neural-logic network that incorporates general knowledge of spatial constraints in terms of first-order logic. The model was designed to comprehend a complete set of spatial constraints that are consistent with industrial CAD software, including left, right, above, below, front, behind, parallel, perpendicular, concentric, and coincident relations. The accuracy of 3D model composition and spatial constraint identification was evaluated by the RGB-D scans and 3D models in the ABC dataset. The proposed model achieved 57.23% intersection over union (IoU) in 3D model composition, and over 99% in comprehending all spatial constraints.

Machine Learning 5G Attack Detection in Programmable Logic

Machine learning-assisted network security may significantly contribute to securing 5G components. However, machine learning network security inference speeds generally require tens to hundreds of milliseconds thereby introducing significant latency in 5G operations. The inference latency can be reduced by deploying the machine learning model to programmable logic in a field programmable gate array (FPGA) at the cost of a small loss in accuracy. In order to quantify this loss, as well as to establish baseline performance inference speeds for programmable logic implementations, this work explores an autoencoder and a ß-variational autoencoder deployed on two different FPGA evaluation boards and compares accuracy and performance against an NVIDIA A100 GPU implementation. A publicly available 5G dataset containing 10 types of attacks along with normal traffic is introduced as part of the evaluation.

Software and Firmware-logic Design for the PIP-II Machine Protection System Mode and Configuration Control at Fermilab

The PIP-II Machine Protection System (MPS) requires a dedicated set of tools for configuration control and management of the machine modes and beam modes of the accelerator. The protection system reacts to signals from various elements of the machine according to rules established in a setup database in the form of a Look-Up-Table filtered by the program Mode Controller. This is achieved in accordance with commands from the operator and governed by the firmware logic of the MPS. This paper describes the architecture, firmware logic, and implementation of the program mode controller.

Tunable quantum logic gate on photonic qubits with a ladder emitter

We describe how a ladder emitter can implement a tunable quantum logic gate on photonic qubits encoded in the frequency basis. The ground-to-first excited state of the ladder emitter interacts with the control photon, and the first-to-second excited state transition interacts with the target photon. By controlling the relative detuning between the target photon and the first-to-second excited state transition of the ladder emitter, we enable any controlled-phase operation from 0 to π. We derive analytical formulas for the performance of the gate through the S-matrix formalism as well as describe the mechanism intuitively. This gate is deterministic, does not utilize any active control, and needs only a single ladder emitter, enabling low-footprint and more efficient decomposition of quantum circuits, especially the quantum Fourier transform. We suggest multiple potential systems for physical realization of our proposal, such as lanthanide ions embedded in Purcell-enhanced cavities. We expect these results to motivate further interest in photonic quantum information processing with designer emitters.

Machine Learning Models for Network Traffic Classification in Programmable Logic

Network traffic classification via machine learning on network packet payloads has emerged as an active area of research for network security due to the high accuracy machine learning models have achieved in classifying payloads. For effective deployment as part of network security, these machine learning models must not only classify malicious packet payloads accurately, they must also identify anomalous payloads and perform inference at speeds generally faster than 10,000 packets per second to be effective. This work explores the in- ference speeds and accuracy of several neural network models implemented in programmable logic on various field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) including the Xilinx VC1902 and Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+. This work also presents the design and performance of both an autoencoder and variational autoencoder programmed on the FPGA for identifying anomalous packet payloads. The performance benefits of the FPGA implementation for this type of packet payload inspection driven by machine learning are compared against graphics processing unit (GPU) inference implementations run on two state-of-the-art datacenter GPU devices, the NVIDIA V100 and A100. The model accuracy difference between the FPGA and GPU implementations was found to be 4% or less while the Xilinx VC1902 outperformed both the NVIDIA V100 and A100 for inference speeds on all the models explored except the variational autoencoder.

Superconducting Shuttle-Flux Shift Register for Race Logic and Its Applications

Here this paper presents a superconducting, magnetically-coupled, shuttle-flux shift register (SF-SR) that stores single flux quantum (SFQ) pulses. This shift register has a DC bias operating margin of ±34% at 10 GHz, with a power dissipation of 3.6 μW and 38% fewer Josephson junctions (JJs) when scaled up to multiple stages compared to a data flip-flop (DFF) based shift register. The clock input is inductively coupled and is independent from the data input. We then present three applications for our SF-SR. In the first application, we add two non-destructive readout (NDRO) cells to construct a buffer that temporarily stores the temporal information of a series of race logic (RL) pulses. The second application is a pseudo-random number generator based on a linear function shift register (LFSR). The third application is N parallel SF-SRs that can act similar to a deserializer or instead can emulate a single SF-SR of N times higher clock frequency. These three applications motivate deep shift registers with many shifting intervals, which our SF-SR can implement with fewer JJs and lower power consumption compared to DFF-based shift registers.

Mitigation of Motor Stalling and FIDVR via Energy Storage Systems with Temporal Logic Specifications

The fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) phenomenon has been very common from the distribution system through the transmission system. It causes a delay on recovering significantly depressed local voltage after the fault is cleared, and it can also lead to more widespread cascading system failures. Mitigating this event with current control approaches is challenging and becoming a crucial issue. Here, a model predictive control-based strategy employing signal temporal logic specifications is proposed to help mitigate FIDVR. To this end, it investigates and extends a dynamic performance model allowing analytic insights into the system-wide impact of motor stalling and FIDVR. The proposed controller provides richer descriptions of voltage specifications addressing both magnitude and time simultaneously. We consider different control specifications with reactive power support from energy storage systems to prevent the voltage during/after the fault from dropping too low, and reduce the delay time of voltage recovery. The simulation results conducted with the IEEE 57 bus test network validate the proposed method and demonstrate the effectiveness of the mitigation strategy on FIDVR.
