Goddard high-resolution spectrograph observations of the local interstellar medium and the deuterium/hydrogen ratio along the line of sight toward Capella

HST Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph observations of the 1216, 2600, and 2800 A spectral regions are analyzed for the spectroscopic binary system Capella, obtained at orbital phase 0.26 with 3.27-3.57 km/s resolution and high SNR. The column densities of H I, D I, Mg II, and Fe II for the local interstellar medium along this 12.5 pc line of sight, together with estimates of the temperature and turbulent velocity are inferred. It is inferred that the atomic deuterium/hydrogen ratio by number is 1.65(+0.07, -0.18) x 10 exp -5 for this line of sight. Galactic evolution calculations indicate that the primordial D/H ratio probably lies in the range of (1.5-3) x (D/H)LISM. If H0 = 80 km/s Mpc, as recent evidence suggests, then the baryonic density in units of the Einstein-de Sitter closure density is 0.023-0.031. Thus the universe is argued to expand forever, unless nonbaryonic matter greatly exceeds the amount of baryonic matter.

Landslide Mapping Along the Karnali Highway, Nepal using High-Resolution Imagery

The Karnali highway (Figure 1) is the only major transportation link that connects the remote Karnali region to the provincial capital in Province 6 of Nepal. This area becomes inaccessible by roads during every rainy season due to landslides. Despite the known landslide frequency, there have been no systematic landslide inventories conducted along this highway to date. Recent advancements in remote-sensing technologies have significantly increased our ability to map landslides of various sizes rapidly with less in situ surveys or human interaction. Landslide susceptibility, hazard and risk studies require a complete landslide inventory, which might only be possible from very high-resolution (VHR) and high-resolution (HR) imagery. Recent launch of Sentinel-2 in 2015 has provided free access to HR imagery enabling landslide detection at finer scales then what was possible with previous open source satellite imagery obtained from Landsat and ASTER. Satellites providing VHR imagery are commercially owned, expensive and not freely available expect for when disasters charter is activated. NextView licensing agreement, a partnership between the US government and US commercial vendors provides access to VHR imagery to federal agencies in support of scientific research [1]. This partnership provides access to VHR imagery obtained from the DigitalGlobe (DG) constellation which enables mapping of small landslides (< 100 m2). In this study, VHR imagery from DG and HR imagery from Sentinel-2 will be used to map landslides along the Karnali highway using a semi automatic method based on object-oriented analysis (OOA) to create most recent and up-to-date landslide inventory. The effectiveness of this remote sensing based landslide inventory to produce a susceptibility map and its predictive capacity will be tested.

Demonstrating the Power of Chandra High Resolution Spectroscopy Plasma Diagnostics

The Chandra spectrometers can resolve spectroscopic features that can be used to diagnose the state of emitting plasma. Based on high resolution Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) calibration observations of the active RS CVn-type Binary V711 Tau (HR1099), we determine for the first time the plasma density at a range of coronal temperatures for this type of object. The results are used to constrain coronal structural models and build a picture of the change in coronal structure from stars of solar-like activity to the most active RS CVn-type binaries.

A High-Resolution Capability for Large-Eddy Simulation of Jet Flows

A large-eddy simulation (LES) code that utilizes high-resolution numerical schemes is described and applied to a compressible jet flow. The code is written in a general manner such that the accuracy/resolution of the simulation can be selected by the user. Time discretization is performed using a family of low-dispersion Runge-Kutta schemes, selectable from first- to fourth-order. Spatial discretization is performed using central differencing schemes. Both standard schemes, second- to twelfth-order (3 to 13 point stencils) and Dispersion Relation Preserving schemes from 7 to 13 point stencils are available. The code is written in Fortran 90 and uses hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization. The code is applied to the simulation of a Mach 0.9 jet flow. Four-stage third-order Runge-Kutta time stepping and the 13 point DRP spatial discretization scheme of Bogey and Bailly are used. The high resolution numerics used allows for the use of relatively sparse grids. Three levels of grid resolution are examined, 3.5, 6.5, and 9.2 million points. Mean flow, first-order turbulent statistics and turbulent spectra are reported. Good agreement with experimental data for mean flow and first-order turbulent statistics is shown.

High resolution absorption coefficients for Freon-12

The ultra high resolution absorption coefficients of the Q-branch of Freon-12 obtained with tunable diode laser spectroscopy are presented. Continuous spectra are presented from 1155/cm to 1163/cm, and absolute wavelength calibration was obtained using SO2 spectra as a standard and a 5 cm Ge etalon for relative calibration between SO2 lines. The Freon-12 data obtained at a pressure of 0.05 torr showed a rich and highly structured spectra, but with the exception of three isolated features, collisional broadening reduces the spectra to a structureless continuum for nitrogen pressures greater than 20 torr. The spectra at 1161/cm continue to exhibit structure at atmospheric pressure.

New spectral features of stratospheric trace gases identified from high-resolution infrared balloon-borne and laboratory spectra

A new Michelson-type interferometer system operating in the infrared at very high resolution has been used to record numerous balloon-borne solar absorption spectra of the stratosphere, ground-based solar absorption spectra, and laboratory spectra of molecules of atmospheric interest. In the present work results obtained for several important stratospheric trace gases, HNO3, CIONO2, HO2NO2, NO2, and COF2, in the 8- to 12-micron spectral region are reported. Many new features of these gases have been identified in the stratospheric spectra. Comparison of the new spectra with line-by-line simulations shows that previous spectral line parameters are often inadequate and that new analysis of high-resolution laboratory and atmospheric spectra and improved theoretical calculations will be required for many bands. Preliminary versions of several sets of improved line parameters under development are discussed.

A non-LTE model for the Jovian methane infrared emissions at high spectral resolution

High resolution spectra of Jupiter in the 3.3 micrometer region have so far failed to reveal either the continuum or the line emissions that can be unambiguously attributed to the nu(sub 3) band of methane (Drossart et al. 1993; Kim et al. 1991). Nu(sub 3) line intensities predicted with the help of two simple non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) models -- a two-level model and a three-level model, using experimentally determined relaxation coefficients, are shown to be one to three orders of magnitude respectively below the 3-sigma noise level of these observations. Predicted nu(sub 4) emission intensities are consistent with observed values. If the methane mixing ratio below the homopause is assumed as 2 x 10(exp -3), a value of about 300 K is derived as an upper limit to the temperature of the high stratosphere at microbar levels.

Plant respirometer enables high resolution of oxygen consumption rates

Plant respirometer permits high resolution of relatively small changes in the rate of oxygen consumed by plant organisms undergoing oxidative metabolism in a nonphotosynthetic state. The two stage supply and monitoring system operates by a differential pressure transducer and provides a calibrated output by digital or analog signals.
