Clamp provides efficient connection for high-density currents

Electrical connector clamp /bus bar/ gives high contact-surface efficiency for providing a high current to thin wall stainless steel tubing containing hydrogen gas. It uses lead solder film to provide the electrical equivalent of a fusion bond without degrading the grain structure, permitting disassembly and reuse of the components.

Measurement of High Density Electrons Above a Helium Film on an Amorphous Metal Substrate

Here we have measured two-dimensional electron systems bound to a thin helium film supported by a metallic substrate. We report on our measurement of electron density obtained via a Kelvin probe technique. The underlying metallic substrate is an amorphous metallic alloy (TaWSi), which can support large uniform densities due to its low surface roughness and homogeneous work function. We find that this substrate is able to support high enough densities that the electrons are expected to be Fermi-degenerate.

Attosecond light-field control of high-density plasmas (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

Sub-optical-cycle dynamics of dense electron bunches in relativistic-intensity laser—solid interactions (relativistic plasma mirrors) lead to the emission of high-order harmonics and attosecond light pulses. The aim of this project was to advance our understanding of the fundamental principles underlying high-energy-density physics behind this phenomenon. We achieved this goal by conducting experiments and a comprehensive theoretical analysis of harmonics driven by specially tailored light waveforms providing precise control over the sub-laser-cycle trajectories of the emitting electron bunches. The multi-color laser waveforms, generated in our experiments in a cascaded plasma mirror configuration, allowed us to manipulate (enhance and suppress) harmonic generation in relativistic laser-solid interactions by adjusting the relative phase between the colors.

High density tape casting system

A system is provided for casting thin sheets (or tapes) of particles bound together, that are used for oxygen membranes and other applications, which enables the particles to be cast at a high packing density in a tape of uniform thickness. A slurry contains the particles, a binder, and a solvent, and is cast against the inside walls of a rotating chamber. Prior to spraying the slurry against the chamber walls, a solvent is applied to a container. The solvent evaporates to saturate the chamber with solvent vapor. Only then is the slurry cast. As a result, the slurry remains fluid long enough to spread evenly over the casting surface formed by the chamber, and for the slurry particles to become densely packed. Only then is the chamber vented to remove solvent, so the slurry can dry. The major novel feature is applying solvent vapor to a rotating chamber before casting slurry against the chamber walls.

A Portable High-Density Power Technology for Space, Lunar, and Planetary Applications

A new direct energy conversion concept called Nuclear Thermionic Avalanche Cell (NTAC) combined with a Metallic Junction Thermoelectric (MJ-TE) generator, both invented and patented by NASA, offers high specific power for portable applications. Estimates based on experimental results suggest superior performance compared to radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) by up to two orders of magnitude for the NTAC and three to four times better for the MJ-TE generator for the same mass. The NTAC technology can use a variety of radioisotopes including nuclear waste to liberate a large number of intra-band(IB), inner shell electrons of atoms (105 C/cm3) by gamma-ray photons (100 keV to MeV). In contrast, conventional power generation has poor specific power because they only utilize the valence band electrons (3C/cm3) of the semiconductor or free electrons (8×103 C/cm3) of the conductor.

Near-Complete Sampling of Forest Structure from High-Density Drone Lidar Demonstrated by Ray Tracing

Drone lidar has the potential to provide detailed measurements of vertical forest structure throughout large areas, but a systematic evaluation of unsampled forest structure in comparison to independent reference data has not been performed. Here, we used ray tracing on a high-resolution voxel grid to quantify sampling variation in a temperate mountain forest in the southwest Czech Republic. We decoupled the impact of pulse density and scan-angle range on the likelihood of generating a return using spatially and temporally coincident TLS data. We show three ways that a return can fail to be generated in the presence of vegetation: first, voxels could be searched without producing a return, even when vegetation is present; second, voxels could be shadowed (occluded) by other material in the beam path, preventing a pulse from searching a given voxel; and third, some voxels were unsearched because no pulse was fired in that direction. We found that all three types existed, and that the proportion of each of them varied with pulse density and scan-angle range throughout the canopy height profile. Across the entire data set, 98.1% of voxels known to contain vegetation from a combination of coincident drone lidar and TLS data were searched by high-density drone lidar, and 81.8% of voxels that were occupied by vegetation generated at least one return. By decoupling the impacts of pulse density and scan angle range, we found that sampling completeness was more sensitive to pulse density than to scan-angle range. There are important differences in the causes of sampling variation that change with pulse density, scan-angle range, and canopy height. Our findings demonstrate the value of ray tracing to quantifying sampling completeness in drone lidar.

Systematic Source Determination and X-Ray Radiography Detection of Nonuniformities on High-Density Carbon Ablators

Recent deuterium-tritium (D-T)–layered implosion experiments at the National Ignition Facility have achieved a burning plasma and >1-MJ neutron yield. A series of repeat experiments have shown that the degree of performance is very likely dependent on capsule quality, including the quantity of what are collectively termed “high- Z particles.” These particles are detected on a custom-built radiography system, known as the Sagometer, during the final target qualification process. The term particles is misleading, as the source of these nonuniformities in the capsule images is uncertain; the term detection will be used instead. An increased number of D-T targets have been rejected at the final stages of production due to Sagometer detections. Late detections are deleterious in terms of loss of production parts, effort, and overall operating efficiency. In response, we undertook an effort to determine the origin of these detections and to ultimately mitigate target losses caused by them. Through careful testing and analysis, we have determined neither insufficient production cleanliness nor hohlraum shedding is responsible for the detections on the capsule. Here, we determined that the detections are inherent to the capsule and have made efforts to use the Zeiss Xradia to identify them earlier in the production process. While testing revealed the Xradia is not currently sufficient for identifying such particles using radiography images, we continue to look to other forms of metrology to down select the capsules early in the process.

Transmission Lines for High Frequency and High Density Packaging

We report on resistivity and chemical stability of Cr/Au bilayers deposited by sputtering on three kinds of substrates: alumina, aluminum nitride and aluminum nitride coated alumina. The insertion loss of Cr/Au microstrip lines fabricated on these three substrates was low and stable after 100 cycles in the -65 degree C to 125 degree C temperature range.

Synthesis of high-density olivine LiFePO 4 from paleozoic siderite FeCO 3 and its electrochemical performance in lithium batteries

The lithium-ion cathode material olivine LiFePO 4 (LFP) has been synthesized for the first time from natural paleozoic iron carbonate (FeCO 3 ). The ferrous carbonate starting material consists of the mineral siderite at about 92 wt. % purity. Because FeCO 3 has divalent iron, the reaction with lithium dihydrogen phosphate (LiH 2 PO 4 ) provides a unique method to develop iron-(II) containing LFP in an inert atmosphere. Since siderite FeCO 3 is a common mineral that can be directly mined, it may, therefore, provide an inexpensive route for the production of LFP. After carbon-coating, the LFP yields a capacity in the range of 80–110 mAh g -1 LFP (in one chosen specimen sample), which is lower than commercially available LiFePO 4 (150–160 mAh g -1 LFP ). However, the tap density of LFP derived from siderite is noticeably high at 1.65 g cm -3 . The material is likely to be improved with powder purification, nanosized processing, and more complete carbon-coating coverage with increased optimization.

Design of Mini-Plate-1 Irradiation Test for Qualification of High-Density, Low-Enriched U-10Mo Monolithic Fuel

The United States High Performance Research Reactor project is tasked with fuel development and qualification leading to conversion of higher power research and test reactors in the US from high-enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuels. Here, this manuscript identifies the functional and operational design requirements of the first miniature test plate (mini-plate [MP]) irradiation campaign (MP-1) of commercially fabricated LEU U-10Mo monolithic plate-type fuel and is the precursor to a large parametric mini-plate test (MP-2) aimed at producing the data to support regulatory qualification of the LEU U-10Mo monolithic fuel. The manuscript (1) provides a general description of the selected U-10Mo LEU fuel and (2) defines the overall experiment design and functional requirements to accomplish the specific test objective of MP-1, which is to confirm that the commercially manufactured LEU U-10Mo monolithic fuel meets the established requirements of geometric stability, mechanical integrity and stable and predictable behavior. The fuel testing parameters are established by the need to bound performance behavior within the operational envelope of the reactors being converted.

Aeronautical Satellite Data Link System (SDLS) for high-density air-traffic areas

The European Space Agency has recently commissioned a study to investigate the feasibility of a low-cost aeronautical Satellite Data Link System (SDLS) to provide for the needs of Air Traffic Services, i.e. safety related communications over continental areas with high air-traffic density. This study is placed in today's context which sees the first generation of Aeronautical Mobile Satellite System (AMSS) being gradually but restrictively put into service in oceanic airspaces with low air-traffic density. This paper first discusses the case of ATS dedicated versus mixed (ATS and commercial) Comms service provision and identifies the specific ATS comms requirements context. Specific emphasis is put on the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standardization framework for both the ATN (Aeronautical Telecommunication Network) and the SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) Mode S specific services. An architectural system and network design for a future SDLS is then proposed, such as to meet the ATS comms requirements within the realm of existing technologies. To minimize development risk and cost, consideration is given to re-use the ESA-developed Land Mobile Communication Technology, known as MSBN (Mobile Satellite Business Network) featuring distinct subnetworks. It is particularly suited to an ATM (Air Traffic Management) decentralized architecture made of independent ATC (Air Traffic Control) Centers. Finally the study follow-on phase is introduced, which is intended to cover system design and development leading to a demonstration program, as a first step towards proposals for international standardization and acceptance.
