Robust Large-Scale Dynamic Windows using Reversible Metal Electrodeposition

This project funded the study and development of dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition (RME). Dynamic windows allow user control over light and heat flow into and out of buildings, which offer both advantages in building aesthetics (with worker productivity improvement of 2%) and energy efficiency (up to 20% savings) compared to static controls such as low emissivity coatings and blinds/shades. Despite these advantages, dynamic windows, which traditionally rely on electrochromic metal oxides or conductive organic molecules for light modulation have failed to significantly impact the market due to issues related to cost, color, and optical dynamic range. Dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition (RME) are an exciting alternative approach and have the potential to overcome the issues associated with traditional technologies. A RME dynamic window is an electrochemical cell that modulates light using the reversible electrodeposition of metal on and off a transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which serves as the working electrode. The electrolyte has nearly colorless metal salts dissolved, and application of a cathodic potential on the TCO reduces the metal cations across the TCO surface to their metallic form, making a thin film that is efficient at blocking out light. A reverse in polarity oxidizes the metal, where it dissolves into solution, returning the window back to transparent. The counter electrode typically employed is a metal mesh, which is used to balance the electrochemical reactions happening on the TCO working electrode. These RME dynamic windows have the largest dynamic range (capable of reaching <<0.1% transmission) with color neutral tinting of any existing technology using solution processed techniques, which positions the technology as a promising candidate to penetrate the residential market. We have successfully scaled up the windows from 25 cm2 to 929 cm 2 , and we have demonstrated significant improvements to both the cycle life (10,000 cycles in a 3-electrode half-cell) and shelf life (>1 month) of our windows. We have published our work in high impact journals (6 published and 2 manuscripts in prep), filed 5 patents, and have incorporated TYNT Technologies to commercialize the technology.

Physically rigorous reduced-order flow models of fractured subsurface environments without explosive computational cost

Fractured media models comprise discontinuities of multiple lengths (e.g. fracture lengths and apertures, wellbore area) that fall into the relatively insignificant length scales spanning millimeter-scale fractures to centimeter-scale wellbores in comparison to the extensions of the field of interest, and challenge the conventional discretization methods imposing highly-fine meshing and formidably large numerical cost. By utilizing the recent developments in the finite element analysis of electromagnetics that allow to represent material properties on a hierarchical geometry, this project develops computational capabilities to model fluid flow, heat conduction, transport and induced polarization in large-scale geologic environments that possess geometrically-complex fractures and man-made infrastructures without explosive computational cost. The computational efficiency and robustness of this multi-physics modeling tool are demonstrated by considering various highly-realistic complex geologic environments that are common in many energy and national security related engineering problems.

Modeling the cooldown of cryocooler conduction-cooled devices

Cryocooler conduction cooled devices can experience significant cooldown time due to lower available cooling capacity compares to convection cooled devices. Therefore, the cooldown time is an important design parameter for conduction cooled devices. This article introduces a framework developed in Python for calculating the cooldown profiles and cooldown time of cryocooler conduction-cooled devices such as superconducting magnets and accelerator cavities. The cooldown time estimation problem is essentially a system of ordinary first-order differential equations comprising the material properties (temperature dependent thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity) of the components intertwined with the prevailing heat transfer channels (conduction, radiation, and heat flow across pressed contacts) and the cryocooler capacity. The formulation of this ODE system is first presented. This ODE system is then solved using the in-built Python library odeint. A case study is presented comprising a small cryocooler conduction-cooled copper stabilized niobium-titanium magnet. The case study is supplemented with the Python script enabling the reader to simply tweak the device design parameters and optimize the design from the point of view of slow/fast cooldown.

Bio-Based Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for Thermal Energy Storage (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

The goal of this project is to develop a novel bio-based phase change material (PCM) derived from squid ring teeth (SRT) proteins, and design a prototype heat exchanger based on these bio-based PCMs for energy storage and dynamic heat exchange for building thermal energy storage systems. The PCMs, derived from SRT proteins, will demonstrate room temperature energy storage capacities and switchable thermal conductivities that redefine the current state-of-the-art (SOA) for building thermal energy storage. Further, in a single material and with a single manufacturing processes, our proposed thermal battery will be developed with “on demand” thermal conductivity for rapid charging/discharging but superior insulation during energy storage periods. More specifically, our bio-based PCMs have demonstrated: 1) the potential for increased energy storage capacity (i.e., greater than paraffines at room temperature); 2) tunability in thermal conductivity with the largest thermal conductivity switching ratios for an intrinsic material reported to date, and 3) a 100% recyclable and biodegradable PCM with low volatility and toxicity and scalability in its manufacture for both residential and commercial applications. The already established ability for roll-to-roll processing of these non-toxic, non-flammable SRT composites along with their carbon-neutral manufacturing processes that has been pioneered by our team make this solution a disruptive and impactful technology to redefine the current SOA of energy storage technologies. The outcomes of this effort have been: 1) the identification of new bio-based PCM that establishes a new SOA for thermal conductivity and energy storage density at room temperature and 2) the development of a new experimental technique to measure the energy storage density via latent heat measurements during melting of thin films. This new technique can be applied to thin films (as thin as < 1 micrometer), and represents a novel approach for thin film energy storage density measurements. Dynamic thermal energy storage is the missing technology that will enable a grid- interactive efficient building (GEB). For a “smart” building capable of connecting with the power grid, the media must be inexpensive and possess thermal switching capabilities to control the time-dependent heat flow into (and out of) the PCM on demand. Unique to the material system in this program, programmable SRT-based PCM show improvements as compared to traditionally used PCMs, and thus its technical performance will represent a leap forward for the future GEB concept.

M-Star ® Software Test and Verification

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) currently manages the risk for retained hydrogen in the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) vessels by implementing a Retained Hydrogen Program. The current program relies on Sludge Batch (SB) 8 Gas Chromatograph data and on conservative assumptions concerning gas release and retention to determine allowable vessel Quiescent time (Q-time). The authors identified M-Star ® CFD as a software that could simulate processes such as fluid flow, heat transfer, species transport, chemical reactions, particle transport, and retained hydrogen gas release. Preliminary simulation results suggest that more realistic assumptions on gas retention and release may be feasible for the DWPF retained hydrogen program. Because of the desire to use the M-Star ® software to perform analyses that support nuclear safety, SRMC has requested Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to upgrade the software classification level of M-Star ® CFD from level D to level A to perform analyses that support nuclear safety.
