Welding, bonding, and sealing of refractory metals by vapor deposition

Plating process welds, bonds, and seals refractory metals without weakening or changing the structure of the base metals. A metal halide compound in the vapor phase is decomposed to deposit filler metal on the base metal. The resulting bond is a true metal-to-metal bond.

Mixing weld gases offers advantages

Argon added to helium during gas tungsten arc cover-pass welding in the horizontal position results in a better controlled wider bead width, increased arc stability, and reduction in heat input. Adequate filler material wetness and penetration pass coverage is possible with only one pass.

High temperature rare earth solid lubricants

Rare earth trifluorides have potential use as lubricating fillers for mechanical carbons and as coatings on metallic substrates. Friction experiments show that they are effective in reducing metallic wear.

Improved welding of Rene-41

Gas-tungsten arc welding with a filler of Rene-41 produces strong welded joints. When Rene-41 is used, resistance to strain-age cracking is greatly increased by post-weld solution annealing in an inert atmosphere. Mechanical properties of Rene-41 and Hastelloy-W are compared.

Welded polypropylene liners for large descaling tanks

Liners for nitric and hydrofluoric acid tanks show no sign of deterioration after 18 months of continuous use. Each side of each edge of the polypropylene sheets is chamfered, and sheets are welded from both sides with polypropylene filler rod and a special hot-air welding torch.

Fabrication techniques for thoria-dispersed /TD/ nickel

Metal spinning forms combustion chamber sections and nozzle sections, arc welding joints sections to form rocket motor. Hastelloy-X as filler results in slightly weaker weld than the TD nickel weld, but permits formation of larger rocket motor than is otherwise possible.
