A cost comparison of various hourly-reliable and net-zero hydrogen production pathways in the United States

Hydrogen (H 2 ) as an energy carrier may play a role in various hard-to-abate subsectors, but to maximize emission reductions, supplied hydrogen must be reliable, low-emission, and low-cost. Here, we build a model that enables direct comparison of the cost of producing net-zero, hourly-reliable hydrogen from various pathways. To reach net-zero targets, we assume upstream and residual facility emissions are mitigated using negative emission technologies. For the United States (California, Texas, and New York), model results indicate next-decade hybrid electricity-based solutions are lower cost ($2.02-$2.88/kg) than fossil-based pathways with natural gas leakage greater than 4% ($2.73-$5.94/kg). These results also apply to regions outside of the U.S. with a similar climate and electric grid. However, when omitting the net-zero emission constraint and considering the U.S. regulatory environment, electricity-based production only achieves cost-competitiveness with fossil-based pathways if embodied emissions of electricity inputs are not counted under U.S. Tax Code Section 45V guidance.

Chemochromic Hydrogen Leak Detectors

At NASA, hydrogen safety is a key concern for space shuttle processing. Leaks of any level must be quickly recognized and addressed due to hydrogen s lower explosion limit. Chemo - chromic devices have been developed to detect hydrogen gas in several embodiments. Because hydrogen is odorless and colorless and poses an explosion hazard, there is an emerging need for sensors to quickly and accurately detect low levels of leaking hydrogen in fuel cells and other advanced energy- generating systems in which hydrogen is used as fuel. The device incorporates a chemo - chromic pigment into a base polymer. The article can reversibly or irreversibly change color upon exposure to hydrogen. The irreversible pigment changes color from a light beige to a dark gray. The sensitivity of the pigment can be tailored to its application by altering its exposure to gas through the incorporation of one or more additives or polymer matrix. Furthermore, through the incorporation of insulating additives, the chemochromic sensor can operate at cryogenic temperatures as low as 78 K. A chemochromic detector of this type can be manufactured into any feasible polymer part including injection molded plastic parts, fiber-spun textiles, or extruded tapes. The detectors are simple, inexpensive, portable, and do not require an external power source. The chemochromic detectors were installed and removed easily at the KSC launch pad without need for special expertise. These detectors may require an external monitor such as the human eye, camera, or electronic detector; however, they could be left in place, unmonitored, and examined later for color change to determine whether there had been exposure to hydrogen. In one type of envisioned application, chemochromic detectors would be fabricated as outer layers (e.g., casings or coatings) on high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks and other components of hydrogen-handling systems to provide visible indications of hydrogen leaks caused by fatigue failures or other failures in those systems. In another type of envisioned application, chemochromic detectors of this type could be optoelectronically instrumented for monitoring to provide measured digital indications of color changes indicative of the presence of hydrogen.

Vertically stacked photovoltaic and thermal solar cell

According to some embodiments, the present invention provides a novel photovoltaic solar cell system from photovoltaic modules that are vertically arrayed in a stack format using thin film semiconductors selected from among organic and inorganic thin film semiconductors. The stack cells may be cells that are produced in a planar manner, then vertically oriented in an angular form, also termed herein tilted, to maximize the light capturing aspects. The use of a stack configuration system as described herein allows for the use of a variety of electrode materials, such as transparent materials or semitransparent metals. Light concentration can be achieved by using fresnel lens, parabolic mirrors or derivatives of such structures. The light capturing can be controlled by being reflected back and forth in the photovoltaic system until significant quantities of the resonant light is absorbed. Light that passes to the very end and can be reflected back through the device by beveling or capping the end of the device with a different refractive index material, or alternatively using a reflective surface. The contacting between stacked cells can be done in series or parallel. According to some embodiments, the present invention uses a concentrator architecture where the light is channeled into the cells that contain thermal fluid channels (using a transparent fluid such as water) to absorb and hence reduce the thermal energy generation.

CSP Gen3: Liquid-Phase Pathway to SunShot

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) established the Concentrating Solar Power Generation 3 (CSP Gen3) program to promote the development of advanced CSP systems capable of producing electricity at a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) less than $60/MWh, based on criteria published in the CSP Gen3 Roadmap and a subsequent funding opportunity announcement (Gen3 FOA). This report documents the progress and potential of the “Liquid Pathway” to meet these objectives. The Liquid Pathway proposes the use of low-cost molten chloride salts for energy storage, mated with an operationally flexible solar receiver that employs liquid-metal sodium for heat capture and transfer to the storage salt. This approach leverages molten-salt technology from the current state-of-the-art CSP power towers embodied by plants such as Gemasolar, Crescent Dunes, Noor III, and the DEWA 700 CSP project. Furthermore, the design builds on the knowledge gained over decades of use of liquid-metal sodium as a high-temperature heat transfer fluid (HTF) in solar tests and nuclear-power applications. The commercial representation of the proposed Gen3 design incorporates a high-efficiency sodium receiver operating at ~740°C, with a liquid-liquid heat exchanger feeding a two-tank, molten-chloride salt storage system. Chloride salt is dispatched to a supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) power cycle to provide electric power to the grid. The design integration is a conceptual match for the current sodium receiver → solar salt storage → steam-Rankine power cycle promoted by developer Vast Solar, which may facilitate commercial acceptance and development.

Finite element solution for energy conservation using a highly stable explicit integration algorithm

Theoretical derivation of a finite element solution algorithm for the transient energy conservation equation in multidimensional, stationary multi-media continua with irregular solution domain closure is considered. The complete finite element matrix forms for arbitrarily irregular discretizations are established, using natural coordinate function representations. The algorithm is embodied into a user-oriented computer program (COMOC) which obtains transient temperature distributions at the node points of the finite element discretization using a highly stable explicit integration procedure with automatic error control features. The finite element algorithm is shown to posses convergence with discretization for a transient sample problem. The condensed form for the specific heat element matrix is shown to be preferable to the consistent form. Computed results for diverse problems illustrate the versatility of COMOC, and easily prepared output subroutines are shown to allow quick engineering assessment of solution behavior.

Self-Tuning Impact Damper for Rotating Blades

A self-tuning impact damper is disclosed that absorbs and dissipates vibration energy in the blades of rotors in compressors and/or turbines thereby dramatically extending their service life and operational readiness. The self-tuning impact damper uses the rotor speed to tune the resonant frequency of a rattling mass to an engine order excitation frequency. The rating mass dissipates energy through collisions between the rattling mass and the walls of a cavity of the self-tuning impact damper, as well as though friction between the rattling mass and the base of the cavity. In one embodiment, the self-tuning impact damper has a ball-in-trough configuration with tire ball serving as the rattling mass.

Fabrication processes for effectively transparent contacts

In conventional solar cells with metal contacts, a non-negligible fraction of the incoming solar power is immediately lost either through absorption or reflection upon interaction with the contacts. Effectively transparent contacts (“ETCs”) for solar cells can be referred to as three-dimensional contacts designed to redirect incoming light onto a photoabsorbing surface of a solar cell. In many embodiments, the ETCs have triangular cross-sections. Such ETCs can be placed on a photoabsorbing surface such that at least one of their sides forms an angle with the photoabsorbing surface. In this configuration, the ETCs can redirect incident light onto the photoabsorbing surface, mitigating or eliminating reflection loss compared to conventional solar cells. When constructed in accordance with a number of embodiments of the invention, ETCs can be effectively transparent and highly conductive.

Electrodialysis: An effective methodology to purify the leachate of spent Li-ion batteries

The electrification of transportation and the transition of society towards low or net-zero carbon emissions has led to a skyrocketing global demand for Li-ion batteries. After a service life of three to ten years, Li-ion batteries have less than 80 % of their initial capacities and draw near to the end of their lives for practical utilization. Due to potential supply chain shortages and the value embodied in Li-ion batteries, it is imperative to recycle them, to recover the materials, and to improve the circularity and the sustinability of the industry. How to cost-effectively purify spent batteries while reducing time, energy, and waste emissions is a challenge faced by Li-ion battery recyclers. The first electrochemical membrane reactor reported in our group hasa high selectivity towards lower Cu 2+ , Al 3+ and Fe 3+ ions (<5 ppm) and retains >95% of the Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Mn 2+ ions in the leachate. An advanced electrochemical membrane reactor was developed in this study. Further, not only does the new reactor have the same selectivity as the original reactor, but other advantages including a faster leachate processing rate (up to 10X faster). The advanced reactor can also directly generate acid at the anode side; eliminating the reactor restoration step. The prominent advantages that this electrodialysis technology has over chemical-precipitation methods include: (1) ion recovery efficiencies do not diminish after removing the impurities, Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Mn 2+ , even at a higher initial Ni 2+ ion concentrations; in comparison, chemical precipitation has Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Mn 2+ ion recovery efficiencies reduced significantly when the initial Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Mn 2+ ion concentrations increase. (2) electrodialysis does not change the concentrations of Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Mn 2+ ions significantly, but chemical precipitation could reduce Ni 2+ and Co 2+ ions to less than half of their initial values. Through electro-dialyzing the leachate, the H 2 evolution reaction mechanism was found to switch from the Volmer-acid Heyrovsky mechanism to the Volmer-alkaline Heyrovsky mechanism at a pH of around 3.7.

DS-GL: Advancing Graph Learning via Harnessing the Power of Nature within Dynamic Systems

With the rapid digitization of the world, an increasing number of real-world applications are turning to nonEuclidean data, modeled as graphs. Due to their intrinsic high complexity and irregularity, learning from graph data demands tremendous computational power. Recently, CMOS-compatible Ising machines, i.e., dynamic systems composed of CMOS components, have emerged as a new approach that harnesses the inherent power of natural annealing within dynamic systems to efficiently resolve binary optimization problems and have been adopted for traditional graph computation, such as max-cut. However, when performing complex Graph Learning (GL) tasks, Ising machines face significant hurdles: (i) they are inherently binary and thus ill-suited for real-valued problems; (ii) their expensive all-to-all coupling network that guarantees effective natural annealing poses daunting scalability concerns. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a nature-powered graph learning framework dubbed DS-GL, which is the first effort to transform the process of solving graph learning problems into the natural annealing process within a parameterized dynamic system embodied as a CMOS chip. To tackle the two major hurdles, DS-GL first augments the Ising machine architecture to modify the self-reaction term of its Hamiltonian function from linear to quadratic, effectively serving as an energy regulator. This adjustment maintains the system’s original physical interpretation while enabling it to process continuous, real-valued data. Second, to address the scaling issue, DS-GL further upgrades the real-valued dense Ising machine by decomposing it into a mesh-based multi-PE dynamic system that supports efficient distributed spatial-temporal co-annealing across different PEs through sparse interconnects. By exploiting the inherent sparsity and component structures in real-world graphs, DS-GL is able to map complex graph learning tasks onto the scalable dynamic system while maintaining high accuracy. Evaluations with three diverse GL applications across six real-world datasets, including traffic flow and COVID-19 prediction, show that DS-GL can deliver from 102× to 106× speedups and 500× energy reduction over Graph Neural Networks on GPUs, with 5% - 20% accuracy enhancement.
