The origin of pristine KREEP - Effects of mixing between UrKREEP and the magmas parental to the Mg-rich cumulates

The fact that pristine KREEP basalts generally have bulk-rock molar MgO/(MgO+FeO) ratios lower than average for the lunar crust despite their extraordinarily high incompatible element contents is discussed. Pristine KREEP basalts also have primitive Ni contents compared to mare basalts with comparable REE contents. It is suggested that these facts can be explained through mixing between ancient KREEP precursor materials and primitive Mg-rich melts. Finite-difference models of this mixing, followed by anorthosite assimilation and fractional crystallization provide satisfactory fits to the composition of these basalts. It is suggested that this is a further confirmation of the magmasphere hypothesis.

An alternate hypothesis for the origin of Angra dos Reis - Porphyry, not cumulate

The Angra dos Reis achondrite is a unique meteorite of potentially great importance for understanding the origins of the solar system and of the terrestrial planets. It is proposed that the meteorite, which consists of megacrysts of Al-Ti augite (fassaite) in skeletal or cellular shapes, olivine, and possibly whitlockite in a fine-grained groundmass of the same materials plus spinel, is a porphyritic igneous rock modified by metamorphism. In this interpretation, the megacrysts represent cellular-textured phenocrysts, and the fine-grain groundmass represents crystallized or devitrified magma. Phase equilibria suggest that Angra dos Reis-like compositions could grow phenocrysts of fassaite pyroxene, olivine, and whitlockite. These same compositions could crystallize, without crystal sorting or accumulation, to an almost monomineralic fassaite pyroxenite.

Time-cumulated visible and infrared radiance histograms used as descriptors of surface and cloud variations

The spatial and temporal stability of the distributions of satellite-measured visible and infrared radiances, caused by variations in clouds and surfaces, are investigated using bidimensional and monodimensional histograms and time-composite images. Similar analysis of the histograms of the original and time-composite images provides separation of the contributions of the space and time variations to the total variations. The variability of both the surfaces and clouds is found to be larger at scales much larger than the minimum resolved by satellite imagery. This study shows that the shapes of these histograms are distinctive characteristics of the different climate regimes and that particular attributes of these histograms can be related to several general, though not universal, properties of clouds and surface variations at regional and synoptic scales. There are also significant exceptions to these relationships in particular climate regimes. The characteristics of these radiance histograms provide a stable well defined descriptor of the cloud and surface properties.

SeaWiFS technical report series. Volume 6: SeaWiFS technical report series cumulative index: Volumes 1-5

The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) is the follow-on ocean color instrument to the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), which ceased operations in 1986, after an eight year mission. SeaWiFS is expected to be launched in August 1993, on the Sea Star satellite, being built by Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC). The SeaWiFS Project at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has undertaken the responsibility of documenting all aspects of this mission, which is critical to the ocean color and marine science communities. This documentation, entitled the SeaWiFS Technical Report Series, is in the form of NASA Technical Memoranda Number 104566. All reports published are volumes within the series. This volume serves as a reference, or guidebook, to the previous five volumes and consists of four main sections including an index to key words and phrases, a list of all references cited, and lists of acronyms and symbols used. It is our intention to publish a summary index of this type after every five volumes in the series. This will cover the topics published in all previous editions of the indices, that is, each new index will include all of the information contained in the preceding indices.

Space Science Division cumulative bibliography: 1989-1994

The Space Science Division at NASA's Ames Research Center is dedicated to research in astrophysics, exobiology, and planetary science. These research programs are structured around the study of origins and evolution of stars, planets, planetary atmospheres, and life, and address some of the most fundamental questions pursued by science; questions that examine the origin of life and of our place in the universe. This bibliography is the accumulation of peer-reviewed publications authored by Division scientists for the years 1989 through 1994. The list includes 777 papers published in over 5 dozen scientific journals representing the high productivity and interdisciplinary nature of the Space Science Division.

Northwest Africa 1401: A Polymict Cumulate Eucrite with a Unique Ferroan Heteradcumulate Mafic Clast

The howardite, eucrite and diogenite (HED) clan is the largest suite of achondrites available for study. The suite gives us a unique view of the magmatism that affected some asteroids early in solar system history. One problem with mining the HED clan for petrogenetic information is that there is only limited petrologic diversity among the rock types. Thus, discovering unusual HED materials holds the potential for revealing new insights into the petrologic evolution of the HED parent asteroid. Here we report on petrologic study of an unusual, 27 gram polymict eucrite, Northwest Africa (NWA) 1401. The thin section studied (approx. 20 x 10 mm) contains one large, ferroan clast described separately. The remainder of the rock, including mineral fragments and other, smaller lithic clasts, forms the host breccia.
