Dual C–H functionalization of polyolefins for covalent adaptable network formation via cooperative electrolysis

The increasing demand for carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites with polyolefin thermoset matrices will lead to the generation of large volumes of low molecular weight waste oligomers during the fibre recovery process. To address this challenge, we present a cooperative electrolytic dual C–H bond functionalization strategy for the one-step installation of two key functional groups essential for dynamic linkages of these deconstructed oligomers. Through direct competition studies, we reveal the predominance of tertiary allylic C–H activation along the complex, branched oligomer backbone. The resulting difunctionalized oligomers form covalently adaptable networks with exceptional circularity. By establishing a sustainable pathway for upcycling deconstructed oligomers from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer fibre recovery, this strategy introduces thermoset materials derived directly from waste. Here, it advances sustainable manufacturing practices, contributing to a net-zero waste synthetic ecosystem, and highlights the prospects of mediated electrolysis in macromolecular transformations.

Sequence-directed dynamic covalent assembly of base-4-encoded oligomers

As an information-bearing biomacromolecule, DNA is encoded in base-4, where each residue site can be occupied by any one of four nucleobases. Mimicking the information dense, sequence-selective hybridization of DNA, we demonstrate two orthogonal dynamic covalent interactions to effect the selective assembly of molecular ladders and grids from base-4-encoded oligo(peptoid)s.

Engineering of flat bands and Dirac bands in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs): relationships among molecular orbital symmetry, lattice symmetry, and electronic-structure characteristics

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs), also referred to as 2D polymer networks, display unusual electronic-structure characteristics, which can significantly enrich and broaden the fields of electronics and spintronics. In this Focus article, the objective of this report is to lay the groundwork for the conceptual description of the fundamental relationships among the COF electronic structures, the symmetries of their 2D lattices, and the frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) of their core and linker components. We focus on monolayers of hexagonal COFs and use tight-binding model analyses to highlight the critical role of the frontier-MO symmetry, in addition to lattice symmetry, in determining the nature of the electronic bands near the Fermi level. We rationalize the intriguing feature that, when the core unit has degenerate highest occupied MOs [or lowest unoccupied MOs], the COF highest valence band [or lowest conduction band] is flat but degenerate with a dispersive band at a high-symmetry point of the Brillouin zone; the consequences of having such band characteristics are briefly described. Multi-layer and bulk 2D COFs are found to maintain the salient features of the monolayer electronic structures albeit with a reduced bandgap due to the interlayer coupling. This Focus article is thus meant to provide an effective framework for the engineering of flat and Dirac bands in 2D polymer networks.

Mechanochemistry-driven phase transformation of crystalline covalent triazine frameworks assisted by alkaline molten salts

We report covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have shown wide applications in the fields of separation, catalysis, energy storage, and beyond. However, it is a long-term challenging subject to fabricate high-quality CTF materials via facile procedures. Herein, a mechanochemistry-driven procedure was developed to achieve phase transformation of crystalline CTFs assisted by alkaline molten salts. The transformation of CTF-1 from staggered AB to eclipsed AA stacking mode was achieved by short time (30 min) mechanochemical treatment in the presence of molten salts composed of LiOH/KOH, generating high-quality CTF-1 material with high crystallinity, high surface area (625 m 2 g -1 ), and permanent/ordered porosity without carbonization under ambient conditions. This facile procedure could be extended to provide nanoporous three-dimensional CTF materials.

Non-covalent planarizing interactions yield highly ordered and thermotropic liquid crystalline conjugated polymers

Controlling the multi-level assembly and morphological properties of conjugated polymers through structural manipulation has contributed significantly to the advancement of organic electronics. In this work, a redox active conjugated polymer, TPT–TT, composed of alternating 1,4-(2-thienyl)-2,5-dialkoxyphenylene (TPT) and thienothiophene (TT) units is reported with non-covalent intramolecular S⋯O and S⋯H–C interactions that induce controlled main-chain planarity and solid-state order. As confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, these intramolecular interactions influence the main chain conformation, promoting backbone planarization, while still allowing dihedral rotations at higher kinetic energies (higher temperature), and give rise to temperature-dependent aggregation properties. Thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) behavior is confirmed by cross-polarized optical microscopy (CPOM) and closely correlated with multiple thermal transitions observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This LC behavior allows us to develop and utilize a thermal annealing treatment that results in thin films with notable long-range order, as shown by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). Specifically, we identified a first LC phase, ranging from 218 °C to 107 °C, as a nematic phase featuring preferential face-on π–π stacking and edge-on lamellar stacking exhibiting a large extent of disorder and broad orientation distribution. A second LC phase is observed from 107 °C to 48 °C, as a smectic A phase featuring sharp, highly ordered out-of-plane lamellar stacking features and sharp tilted backbone stacking peaks, while the structure of a third LC phase with a transition at 48 °C remains unclear, but resembles that of the solid state at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the significance of thermal annealing is evident in the ∼3-fold enhancement of the electrical conductivity of ferric tosylate-doped annealed films reaching 55 S cm −1 . More importantly, thermally annealed TPT–TT films exhibit both a narrow distribution of charge-carrier mobilities (1.4 ± 0.1) × 10 −2 cm 2 V −1 s −1 along with a remarkable device yield of 100% in an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) configuration. This molecular design approach to obtain highly ordered conjugated polymers in the solid state affords a deeper understanding of how intramolecular interactions and repeat-unit symmetry impact liquid crystallinity, solution aggregation, solution to solid-state transformation, solid-state morphology, and ultimately device applications.

Effect of Hydrophilicity-Imparting Substituents on Exciton Delocalization in Squaraine Dye Aggregates Covalently Templated to DNA Holliday Junctions

Molecular aggregates exhibit emergent properties, including the collective sharing of electronic excitation energy known as exciton delocalization, that can be leveraged in applications such as quantum computing, optical information processing, and light harvesting. In a previous study, we found unexpectedly large excitonic interactions (quantified by the excitonic hopping parameter J m,n ) in DNA-templated aggregates of squaraine (SQ) dyes with hydrophilic-imparting sulfo and butylsulfo substituents. Here, we characterize DNA Holliday junction (DNA-HJ) templated aggregates of an expanded set of SQs and evaluate their optical properties in the context of structural heterogeneity. Specifically, we characterized the orientation of and J m,n between dyes in dimer aggregates of non-chlorinated and chlorinated SQs. Here, three new chlorinated SQs that feature a varying number of butylsulfo substituents were synthesized and attached to a DNA-HJ via a covalent linker to form adjacent and transverse dimers. Various characteristics of the dye, including its hydrophilicity (in terms of log P o/w ) and surface area, and of the substituents, including their local bulkiness and electron withdrawing capacity, were quantified computationally.

Tuning CO 2 uptake capacity in covalent organic frameworks via metal doping

Covalent organic framework (COF) structures have been synthesized and doped with Cu 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Zn 2+ . Incorporation of a phenol moiety increases metal doping capacity by 2–5% by mass, and results in increased CO 2 adsorption by as much as 40%, compared to undoped structures. Interestingly, gas uptake is improved even though the incorporation of cations in the pore lowers the overall surface area of the structures.
