Rare isotope-containing diamond colour centres for fundamental symmetry tests

Detecting a non-zero electric dipole moment in a particle would unambiguously signify physics beyond the Standard Model. A potential pathway towards this is the detection of a nuclear Schiff moment, the magnitude of which is enhanced by the presence of nuclear octupole deformation. However, due to the low production rate of isotopes featuring such ‘pear-shaped’ nuclei, capturing, detecting and manipulating them efficiently is a crucial prerequisite. Incorporating them into synthetic diamond optical crystals can produce defects with defined, molecule-like structures and isolated electronic states within the diamond band gap, increasing capture efficiency, enabling repeated probing of even a single atom and producing narrow optical linewidths. In this study, we used density functional theory to investigate the formation, structure and electronic properties of crystal defects in diamond containing 229 ⁢Pa, a rare isotope that is predicted to have an exceptionally strong nuclear octupole deformation. In addition, we identified and studied stable lanthanide-containing defects with similar electronic structures as non-radioactive proxies to aid in experimental methods. Our findings hold promise for the existence of such defects and can contribute to the development of a quantum information processing-inspired toolbox of techniques for studying rare isotopes.

Electronic structure of the Si-containing topological Dirac semimetal CaAl 2 Si 2

There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, very few of them contain silicon, the most widely used element in the electronics industry. Recently, ternary compound CaA l 2 S i 2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the comprehensive electronic structure of CaA l 2 S i 2 . A pair of topological Dirac crossings is observed along the k z direction, in good agreement with the ab initio calculations, confirming the topological Dirac semimetal nature of the compound. Our study expands the topological material family on Si-containing compounds, which have great application potential in realizing low-cost, nontoxic electronic devices with topological quantum states.

Search for new physics using effective field theory in 13 TeV pp collision events that contain a top quark pair and a boosted Z or Higgs boson

A data sample containing top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) produced in association with a Lorentz-boosted Z or Higgs boson is used to search for signs of new physics using effective field theory. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions produced at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC and collected by the CMS experiment. Selected events contain a single lepton and hadronic jets, including two identified with the decay of bottom quarks, plus an additional large-radius jet with high transverse momentum identified as a Z or Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark pair. Machine learning techniques are employed to discriminate between $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z or $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H events and events from background processes, which are dominated by $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ + jets production. No indications of new physics are observed. The signal strengths of boosted $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H production are measured, and upper limits are placed on the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H differential cross sections as functions of the Z or Higgs boson transverse momentum. The effects of new physics are probed using a framework in which the standard model is considered to be the low-energy effective field theory of a higher energy scale theory. Eight possible dimension-six operators are added to the standard model Lagrangian and their corresponding coefficients are constrained via fits to the data.

A fully contained sample holder capable of electron-yield detection at soft X-ray energies

A holder has been developed that enables electron yield-detected soft X-ray spectroscopy of fully contained samples at low temperature. Crucially, this design uses elements of the sample containment to collect ejected electrons, removing the need to expose samples directly to the vacuum environment of the spectrometer. The design is modular and should be adaptable to a number of different endstation configurations, enabling spectroscopy of air-sensitive, radioactive and vacuum-sensitive (biological) samples.

Demonstration of Passivation Using a Low-Temperature-Grown, Al-Containing Window Layer by HVPE

We present hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) growth of single junction GaAs solar cells with Al0.4Ga0.6As front passivation layers at a growth temperature of 650°C. Devices achieved a short circuit current density of ~27.52 mA/cm2 after anti-reflection coating, similar to devices that used GaInP windows with the same bandgap, indicating that AlGaAs provides front-surface passivation resulting in a low interface recombination velocity. The low temperature growth of Al containing III-V materials by HVPE allows for compatibility with In-containing alloys in high-efficiency III-V device structures for various applications.

Microstructure and bonding between calcium aluminate cement‐containing gahnite–alumina matrix and refractory aggregates

Calcium aluminate cement enhances the thermomechanical properties of refractory castables through the formation of acicular calcium hexaluminate (CaO·6Al 2 O 3 ), Ca 2 Mg 2 Al 28 O 46 (CAM-I), and CaMg 2 Al 16 O 27 (CAM-II) phases in MgO- or MgAl 2 O 4 -containing castables. The compatibility of CA 6 with gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ), and acicular Ca 2 Zn 2 Al 28 O 46 (CAZ-I) and CaZn 2 Al 16 O 27 (CAZ-II) phases formation have been previously reported. Here, in this work, the interaction between a CAC binder containing ZnAl 2 O 4 -Al 2 O 3 matrix with commonly used refractory aggregates such as tabular alumina (TA), alumina-rich (AR90, AR78) and stoichiometric (SM72) MgAl 2 O 4 spinels, and fused and dead-burned magnesia (FM, DBM, respectively) were investigated at 1650°C for 5 h. Microstructural analysis, using digital microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, revealed the formation of acicular CaZn 0.18 Al 11.82 O 18.91 , CAZ-I and CAZ-II grains, and strong interfacial bonding between the matrix and TA and spinel aggregates. FM and DBM were found to debond from the matrix. Thick interface layers were observed between the matrix and all the aggregates but TA. Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) shows that the difference in the number of acicular grains between the interface zone and the bulk matrix (Z) is statistically significant for AR90/Z, SM72/Z, FM/Z, and DBM/Z interfaces, but not significant for TA/Z and AR78/Z. The role of the aggregates’ chemistry on the interfacial bonding and microstructure evolution is discussed.

Fabrication, Modeling, and Testing of a Prototype Thermal Energy Storage Containment

Increasing penetration of variable renewable energy resources requires the deployment of energy storage at a range of durations. Long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies will fulfill the need to firm variable renewable energy resource output year round; lithium-ion batteries are uneconomical at these durations. Thermal energy storage (TES) is one promising technology for LDES applications because of its siting flexibility and ease of scaling. Particle-based TES systems use low-cost solid particles that have higher temperature limits than the molten salts used in traditional concentrated solar power systems. A key component in particle-based TES systems is the containment silo for the high-temperature (>1100 degrees C) particles. This study combined experimental testing and computational modeling methods to design and characterize the performance of a particle containment silo for LDES applications. A laboratory-scale silo prototype was built and validated the congruent transient finite element analysis (FEA) model. The performance of a commercial-scale silo was then characterized using the validated model. The commercial-scale model predicted a storage efficiency above 95% after 5 days of storage with a design storage temperature of 1200 degrees C. Insulation material and concrete temperature limits were considered as well. The validation of the methodology means the FEA model can simulate a range of scenarios for future applications. This work supports the development of a promising LDES technology with implications for grid-scale electrical energy storage, but also for thermal energy storage for industrial process heating applications.

High-Temperature Thermophysical Property Measurement of Proposed Gen3 CSP Containment Materials

Abstract The US Department of Energy (DOE) has sponsored an initiative to improve the thermal efficiency of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems. To approach parity with conventional fossil fuel-based electricity generation, the operating temperature of the CSP power cycle must exceed 700°C with integrated thermal energy storage. The materials used to house this high-temperature heat transfer media must be thermally stable and corrosion resistant. However, the temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of commonly used containment materials (nickel alloys and alumina-based firebricks) are either not well known or poorly understood. In this report, the high-temperature thermal properties of thirteen (13) candidate containment materials proposed by the CSP community are tested using laser flash analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

REGULATORY TESTING AND POSTTEST ANALYSIS OF THE DPP-3 TYPE B SHIPPING CONTAINER FOR NCT AND HAC TESTS

The safe transportation of radioactive material using appropriately designed and certified transportation packages is important to protect the public and environment. Therefore, a comprehensive and rigorous system of packaging requirements are required. The purpose of this test protocol is to determine the effects of drop testing on package performance in a Type B shipping package (DPP-3). Required physical tests for the DPP-3 package include normal conditions of transport and hypothetical accident conditions test requirements. The preparation, regulatory testing, and post-test evaluation of a Type B shipping package tested to the 10 CFR 71.71 and 10 CFR 71.73 requirements will be presented. Six packages were tested and the responses when subjected to the HAC sequence of free drop, puncture, and thermal tests according to 10 CFR 71.73 were measured. The posttest helium leak test showed a leak rate less than 1 × 10-7 He-cc/sec which means that the containment boundary was maintained after the regulatory testing, therefore maintaining a leak tight environment. To determine the amount of change in the package performance measurements, statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 26. The null hypothesis of the testing was that there would not be a change in the measurements from pre to post-testing large enough to find statistical significance. Therefore, a finding of statistical significance indicated too much variability in the package design and was deemed an unfavorable finding. A repeated measures t-test was used to analyze the drum lids and CV torques. A one-way ANOVA was used to analyze height and diameter packages. Results of the repeated measures t-test indicated that all six containment vessel lid torques were statistically significant. However only three out of the six drum lid torques were statistically significant. Therefore, design of the lids caused more variability than necessary when subjected to the following drop tests: 1.) horizontal and cold; 2.) vertical lid down; and 3.) corner with lid up. Results of the one-way ANOVA analysis on height indicated that four out of the six CTUs were statistically significant. Thus, design of the CTUs caused more variability then necessary when subjected to the following drop tests: 1.) horizontal hot; 2.) horizontal cold; 3.) corner lid up; and 4.) corner lid down. Results of the one-way ANOVA analysis on diameter indicated that all six CTUs were statistically significant. Thus, design of the CTUs caused more variability then necessary when subjected to all of the tests. The DPP-3 design has been shown to be an acceptable design for the transport of radioactive materials. However, results of the statistical analysis reveal a possible improvement in package and test design to reduce variability in package performance measurement before and after testing.

Human cerebrospinal fluid contains diverse lipoprotein subspecies enriched in proteins implicated in central nervous system health

Lipoproteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the central nervous system (CNS) resemble plasma high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), which are a compositionally and structurally diverse spectrum of nanoparticles with pleiotropic functionality. Whether CSF lipoproteins (CSF-Lps) exhibit similar heterogeneity is poorly understood because they are present at 100-fold lower concentrations than plasma HDL. To investigate the diversity of CSF-Lps, we developed a sensitive fluorescent technology to characterize lipoprotein subspecies in small volumes of human CSF. We identified 10 distinctly sized populations of CSF-Lps, most of which were larger than plasma HDL. Mass spectrometric analysis identified 303 proteins across the populations, over half of which have not been reported in plasma HDL. Computational analysis revealed that CSF-Lps are enriched in proteins important for wound healing, inflammation, immune response, and both neuron generation and development. Network analysis indicated that different subpopulations of CSF-Lps contain unique combinations of these proteins. Our study demonstrates that CSF-Lp subspecies likely exist that contain compositional signatures related to CNS health.

(Mg,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)O: A rocksalt high-entropy oxide containing divalent Mn and Fe

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have aroused growing interest due to fundamental questions relating to their structure formation, phase stability, and the interplay between configurational disorder and physical and chemical properties. Introducing Fe(ιι) and Mn(ιι) into a rocksalt HEO is considered challenging, as theoretical analysis suggests that they are unstable in this structure under ambient conditions. Here, we develop a bottom-up method for synthesizing Mn- and Fe-containing rocksalt HEO (FeO-HEO). We present a comprehensive investigation of its crystal structure and the random cation-site occupancy. We show the improved structural robustness of this FeO-HEO and verify the viability of an oxygen sublattice as a buffer layer. Compositional analysis reveals the valence and spin state of the iron species. We further report the antiferromagnetic order of this FeO-HEO below the transition temperature ~218 K and predict the conditions of phase stability of Mn- and Fe-containing HEOs. Our results provide fresh insights into the design and property tailoring of emerging classes of HEOs.

Robust Containment Queries over Collections of Rational Parametric Curves via Generalized Winding Numbers

Point containment queries for regions bound by watertight geometric surfaces, i.e., closed and without self-intersections, can be evaluated straightforwardly with a number of well-studied algorithms. When this assumption on domain geometry is not met, such methods are either unusable, or prone to misclassifications that can lead to cascading errors in downstream applications. More robust point classification schemes based on generalized winding numbers have been proposed, as they are indifferent to these imperfections. However, existing algorithms are limited to point clouds and collections of linear elements. We extend this methodology to encompass more general curved shapes with an algorithm that evaluates the winding number scalar field over unstructured collections of rational parametric curves. In particular, we evaluate the winding number for each curve independently, making the derived containment query robust to how the curves are arranged. We ensure geometric fidelity in our queries by treating each curve as equivalent to an adaptively constructed polyline that provably has the same generalized winding number at the point of interest. Our algorithm is numerically stable for points that are arbitrarily close to the model, and explicitly treats points that are coincident with curves. We demonstrate the improvements in computational performance granted by this method over conventional techniques as well as the robustness induced by its application.

Benchmarking Solid-State Batteries Containing Sulfide Separators: Effects of Electrode Composition and Stack Pressure

Integrating sulfide separators into solid-state batteries (SSBs) containing high energy cathodes typically requires one or more materials and engineering solutions including: (i) applying interfacial coatings to mitigate electrolyte decomposition, (ii) applying high stack pressures to form robust solid-solid contacts, and (iii) using alloying anodes to avoid Li dendrite formation. Despite the promise of these approaches, a lack of standardized testing protocols makes it difficult to directly compare results among different studies. To address this problem, the present work benchmarks the performance of SSBs containing β-Li 3 PS 4 (LPS) separators and composite cathodes. By systematically varying the anode/cathode composition and stack pressure, this work demonstrates that cathode design is a major bottleneck for solid-state cells cycled at low rates (<100 µA cm -2 ). Operando stack pressure measurements show that, while mechanical confinement generally promotes higher active material utilization and cycling stability, this strategy alone does not address interfacial reactivity between LPS and high voltage cathodes. Here, these results also demonstrate that stress evolution during cycling is dominated by volume changes at the Li metal anode. Finally, we show that FeS 2 cathodes with moderate operating voltages (<3 V vs Li/Li + ) exhibit superior cycling performance compared to high voltage cathodes by facilitating formation of stable cathode/electrolyte interfaces.

Improved Performance of Silicon-Containing Anodes with Organic Solvent-Solubilized Lithium Nitrate

Three different organic solvents (dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) were used to improve the solubility of LiNO 3 in a standard carbonate-based electrolyte with lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) as the salt. Together, the LiDFOB and organic-solvent solubilized LiNO 3 preferentially reduce on the surface of silicon-containing anodes to create an SEI rich in oxalates, nitrate decomposition species, and B-F species. The improved stability of the SEI throughout the first 100 cycles results in silicon and silicon/graphite composite anodes with better capacity retention than observed with standard electrolytes or fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) containing electrolytes. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the use of non-traditional electrolyte solvents in the improvement and optimization of lithium ion-battery electrolytes.

Guidelines for Making, Interpreting, and Quantifying Activity Measurements of Molten Salts Containing Mixed Cations and Anions Using Cation-Based Electrodes by Electromotive Force

Measurements of thermochemical properties in molten salt electrolytes with mixtures of cations and anions are difficult to interpret. Electromotive force measurements of salts containing common anions were driven by the least stable anion compound (e.g., LiCl in LiCl-KCl), while measurements in common cation salts were driven by the most noble anion half-cell reaction (e.g., F − /F 2 in LiCl-LiF). Measurements in mixed cation and anion salts were driven by the least stable anion compound for the most noble anion half-cell reaction (e.g., KF in KCl-LiF). These guidelines enable quantification of the activity of electroactive species in salts containing multiple cations or anions.

static-subid: Deterministic subordinate UID/GID assignment for unprivileged containers

static-subid calculates predictable subordinate UID and GID ranges for Linux users based on their UID, ensuring consistent ID mappings across multiple systems. Unlike shadow-utils' sequential allocation (which depends on creation order), static-subid uses a deterministic formula that guarantees the same user UID always receives the same subordinate ID range. Subordinate IDs enable user namespaces for unprivileged container runtimes (Podman, Docker rootless mode, LXC) by mapping container UIDs/GIDs to host subordinate IDs without requiring root privileges.

Thermal conductivity of crack-containing media: A numerical study

The present study aims to evaluate the effective thermal conduction behavior of crack-containing media through micromechanical modeling. Numerical analyses were performed using the finite element method, first using periodic arrays of elliptical pores and then reducing the elliptical minor axis to reach the crack limit. This parametric approach was seen to be able to capture the effect of discontinuity across the crack face in a straightforward manner. The overall thermal conductivity of the model structures, encompassing a range of crack densities and spatial distributions, was investigated. It was found that, for cracks with mixed orientations, the effective thermal conductivity is insensitive to the actual crack alignment and can be uniquely represented by the crack density. The mixed-orientation periodic crack configurations are also representative of random sizes, orientations, and spatial distributions of cracks, thus exhibiting a high degree of generality. The modeling analyses can also be used to determine simple empirical expressions for two- and three-dimensional media containing random cracks.

Methanosarcina acetivorans contains a functional ISC system for iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis

Abstract Background The production of methane by methanogens is dependent on numerous iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster proteins; yet, the machinery involved in Fe-S cluster biogenesis in methanogens remains largely unknown. Methanogen genomes encode uncharacterized homologs of the core components of the ISC (IscS and IscU) and SUF (SufBC) Fe-S cluster biogenesis systems found in bacteria and eukaryotes. Methanosarcina acetivorans contains three iscSU and two sufCB gene clusters. Here, we report genetic and biochemical characterization of M. acetivorans iscSU2 . Results Purified IscS2 exhibited pyridoxal 5′- phosphate-dependent release of sulfur from L-cysteine. Incubation of purified IscU2 with IscS2, cysteine, and iron (Fe 2+ ) resulted in the formation of [4Fe-4S] clusters in IscU2. IscU2 transferred a [4Fe-4S] cluster to purified M. acetivorans apo-aconitase. IscU2 also restored the aconitase activity in air-exposed M. acetivorans cell lysate. These biochemical results demonstrate that IscS2 is a cysteine desulfurase and that IscU2 is a Fe-S cluster scaffold. M. acetivorans strain DJL60 deleted of iscSU2 was generated to ascertain the in vivo importance of IscSU2. Strain DJL60 had Fe-S cluster content and growth similar to the parent strain but lower cysteine desulfurase activity. Strain DJL60 also had lower intracellular persulfide content compared to the parent strain when cysteine was an exogenous sulfur source, linking IscSU2 to sulfur metabolism. Conclusions This study establishes that M. acetivorans contains functional IscS and IscU, the core components of the ISC Fe-S cluster biogenesis system and provides the first evidence that ISC operates in methanogens.
