Copper-Clad Aluminum Windings as an Alternative Conductor for High-Power Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging

In this paper, copper and copper-clad aluminum winding conductors were compared. The effective resistances as functions of frequency for the cored coils were compared using the 3D finite element model frequency sweep analysis for low, medium, and high frequencies. To compare equivalent designs, both coils were designed to have similar direct-current resistance. Benefits of the copper-clad aluminum over the copper coils are presented.

Stabilization of garnet/Li interphase by diluting the electronic conductor

The high interfacial resistance and lithium (Li) dendrite growth are two major challenges for solid-state Li batteries (SSLBs). The lack of understanding on the correlations between electronic conductivity and Li dendrite formation limits the success of SSLBs. Here, by diluting the electronic conductor from the interphase to bulk Li during annealing of the aluminium nitride (AlN) interlayer, we changed the interphase from mixed ionic/electronic conductive to solely ionic conductive, and from lithiophilic to lithiophobic to fundamentally understand the correlation among electronic conductivity, Li dendrite, and interfacial resistance. During the conversion-alloy reaction between AlN and Li, the lithiophilic and electronic conductive Li x Al diffused into Li, forming a compact lithiophobic and ionic conductive Li 3 N, which achieved an ultrahigh critical current density of 2.6/14.0 mA/cm 2 in the time/capacity-constant mode, respectively. The fundamental understanding on the effect of interphase nature on interfacial resistance and Li dendrite suppression will provide guidelines for designing high-performance SSLBs.

An examination of different representations of the electrostatic field and potential of an intense relativistic electron beam in a cylindrical conductor and their implications on foil focusing of an elliptical beam

Knowledge of the electrostatic field and potential of an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB) in a cylindrical conductor is essential for understanding the transport of IREBs including the interaction of a grounded conducting foil with the beam. Different representations of the electrostatic field or potential exist in the literature. The different representations are compared and an extension to foil focusing of elliptical beams is discussed.

Asymptotic Expansion of the Impedance Per Unit Length for Rectangular Conductors

An iteration method is introduced to obtain the asymptotic form of the impedance per unit length of a rectangular conductor when the half side lengths are large compared to the skin depth. The first terms of the asymptotic expansion are extracted in closed form. The manner in which the corner corrections fit into the expansion are illustrated. The asymptotic results are compared to a numerical solution in the square limit. The odd corner correction for a right angle edge is also discussed.

The Low-Beta Quadrupoles for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider: enabling higher luminosity by using Nb_3Sn conductor

The large-aperture, high-gradient Low Beta Quadrupoles for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN are the cornerstones of this collider. They are first-of-the-kind accelerator magnets bringing Nb_3Sn conductor to High Energy Physics colliders. In the US they are being fabricated and tested by the HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP), and in Europe by CERN. The design was developed by AUP and CERN in close collaboration. The Q1/Q3 cryo-assemblies contain two 4.2 m long magnets (MQXFA) fabricated and by AUP. They are tested vertically before use in a cry-assembly. In this paper we are going to present the main features of the MQXFA design, results of vertical tests, and main lessons learned. We will also discuss lessons learned for future use of Nb_3Sn magnets in HEP colliders.

AI‐Accelerated Optimization of Self‐Assembled Organic Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conductors (OMIEC) (Final Report)

This document describes research activities, products and outcomes of a DOE-funded program to help accelerate development of Organic Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductors (OMIECs) using neutron scattering and high-throughput experimentation. OMIECs are organic materials that conduct both ionic and electronic charge carriers. For these new OMIEC materials, self-assembling ion-conducting block copolymers (BCPs) are used as a structural template for electronic conducting polymers. This forms OMIECs with long-range structural order that can help facilitate long-range electronic transport. The conductive properties of OMIECs are closely associated with their structure, which is affected by solution conditions and polymer macromolecular designs. Thus high-throughput experimentation has been implemented to explore this large design space effectively. The BCP-CP OMIEC systems explored are composed of ion-conducting diblock or triblock copolymers containing polyethylene oxide (PEO), di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGEEA) or poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PEGMEA) hydrophilic blocks. These blocks will be coupled with either polypropylene oxide (PPO) or polyheptafluorobutyl acrylate (PHFBA) hydrophobic blocks to drive assembly. The electronic conducting component consists of several different types of conjugated polymers. Small angle scattering of neutrons and X-rays (SANS/SAXS) as well as electrochemical analysis have been coupled with modern algorithms for autonomous research using artificial intelligence (AI).

Final Report: Performance-structure characterization to improve REBCO Fusion conductor production at SuperPower

Several companies have used ReBCO tapes to make magnets operating at 20 K, at magnetic fields up to 20T suitable for plasma confining for controlled fusion applications. The transport properties of ReBCO conductors should be optimized for such conditions. NHMFL is one of the few laboratories where such tests can be accomplished. Recently, SuperPower Inc. came up with a new product, REBCO MOCVD HM tape, optimized for plasma confining applications. These HM tapes are designed to have increased critical currents at intermediate temperatures of 4.2K

A Finite Element Study of Stress Reduction Techniques in REBCO HTS Conductor on a Round Cable (CORC) Cable

ReBCO high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape is critical for achieving the high magnetic fields needed in next-generation particle accelerators. Enhancing the mechanical performance of ReBCO tape increases its critical current by reducing internal stress, especially in the superconducting layer. A finite element study examined how copper layer properties affect stress in ReBCO conductor on a round core (CORC) cables. The cable was modeled as a doubly supported beam under uniform compressive stresses."cable was modeled as a doubly supported beam under uniform load to simulate bending. A staged modeling approach from a single tape to a six-layer stack enabled validation and efficient parameter studies. Increasing the yield strength and Young s modulus of the copper layers reduced peak stress in the ReBCO layer. These results support development of improved tape stacks for high-field accelerator magnets

Adhesives for laminating polyimide insulated flat conductor cable

Polymer adhesive laminates polyimide-film flat conductor cable. It is obtained by reacting an appropriate diamine with a dianhydride. The adhesive has also been used in the lamination of copper to copper for the preparation of multilayer circuit boards.

Checking flat conductor cable spacing by means of a moire pattern

Moire tester detects small variations in flat conductor cable spacing by a quick, visual inspection. This device compares the cable to be tested with the negative of a very precise standard cable. The moire, consisting of bands of light and dark zones and its irregularities, can be interpreted as errors in spacing.
