Blockage effects in the chemotaxis of diffusiophoretic particles

Transport mechanisms at the micro- and nano-scale play an essential role in regulating intracellular organization. Recent work indicates that directed motion of constituents inside cells can emerge through diffusiophoretic transport, in which colloidal particles move under the influence of chemical gradients. Here, we examine how blockers—passive or actively consuming—reshape those gradients and thereby influence the motion of diffusiophoretic particles. By combining analytical solutions with finite element simulations, we first show that a single blocker can distort a background gradient enough to create or eliminate stagnation points, significantly modifying particle transport. We then introduce a second, explicitly sized blocker at one of these stagnation points and measure how its finite radius alters the diffusiophoretic velocity field for a test particle. Even moderate changes in the second blockers size can cause noticeable shifts in the substrate distribution, highlighting the importance of accounting for explicit particle radii under crowded or consumption-driven conditions. Our findings underscore that subtle geometric variations—such as the radii and positions of two or more blockers—can profoundly affect diffusiophoretic motion, providing a more complete picture of how blocking and crowding phenomena shape intracellular transport.

An Improved Theoretical Ni-Cd Battery Performance Model

Previous reports have shown how a battery model was developed using porous electrode theory. Since then the model has been upgraded and expanded. These upgrades include oxygen reation and positive electrode intercalation and proton diffusion. The effects of additional details of the solid state physics of the nickel electrode will be reported here.

Contrasting structural reversibility and magnetic correlations in isostructural honeycomb magnets CrCl3 and 𝛼−RuCl3

We report a comparative neutron single crystal diffraction study of the structural and magnetic properties of layered halides CrCl3 and 𝛼−RuCl3. They host a honeycomb arrangement of transition metal ions with distinct electronic configurations and undergo a first-order structural transition between high-temperature 𝐶⁢2/𝑚 and low-temperature 𝑅⁢‾‾‾3. Both compounds show a step-like change in the 𝑐-lattice parameter across the structure transition. In contrast, the in-plane lattice response is quite different: 𝛼−RuCl3 exhibits an abrupt hysteretic change across the transition accompanied by progressive crystalline degradation upon thermal cycling, whereas CrCl3 shows a smooth in-plane lattice evolution and remains structurally robust. Magnetically, CrCl3 orders into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure at 𝑇𝑁=14 K and exhibits pronounced diffuse magnetic scattering extending up to about 40 K. 𝛼−RuCl3 shows no observable magnetic diffuse scattering above its zigzag antiferromagnetic ordering temperature 𝑇𝑁=7.6 K. These results suggest that the contrasting structural responses arise from an interplay between interlayer sliding energetics, stacking-strain coupling, and elastic accommodation of the stacking transition. The distinct chemical bonding and electronic configurations of the two compounds provide a microscopic basis for their different lattice responses to the structure transition and magnetic correlations.

Building Operation Model (Morpheus) for Dallas Fort Worth Airport (CRADA CRD-19-16301 Final Report)

The primary objective of this project was to leverage digital twin technology to enhance the design and operation of DFW Airport terminals and their associated energy systems. To achieve this, Morpheus, a building digital twin, was developed to guide improvements in airport operations, specifically targeting reductions in peak power demand and overall energy consumption.

Improvement in the Thermal-to-Structural Model Mapping Process for Integrated Modeling for the Roman Space Telescope

Integrated Modeling has been a key component of verifying optical requirements for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) that are either impossible or impractical to verify exclusively through ground testing. Two major areas for integrated Modeling are Jitter and Thermal Distortion that require the exchanges of model performance predictions across disciplines. In both cases, distortions are impressed on optical models to evaluate the impact on boresight alignment and wave front error. In the case of Jitter, the disturbances are driven by reactions to motions most often from actuators; however, in the case of thermal distortion, the motions are driven by thermal expansion or contraction as a result of changing temperatures. This then requires a link further upstream to the thermal model, which is used to predict the thermal performance and temperature gradients and stability. The process for mapping temperatures from a thermal model to a corresponding structural model has been performed numerous times through the RST project lifecycle, with improvements in the accuracy, verification, and effort sought throughout. This paper describes some of the recent improvements to the process, including: capture of the visualization parameters, automatic generation of the mapped images for both the thermal and structural model groupings, and reduction in the effort to assemble the full set of mapped temperatures. These upgrades have greatly reduced the manual effort associated with thermal mapping and allowed for faster turn-around of Integrated Modeling predictions.

First principles nickel-cadmium and nickel hydrogen spacecraft battery models

The principles of Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Hydrogen spacecraft battery models are discussed. The Ni-Cd battery model includes two phase positive electrode and its predictions are very close to actual data. But the Ni-H2 battery model predictions (without the two phase positive electrode) are unacceptable even though the model is operational. Both models run on UNIX and Macintosh computers.

Mathematical Characterization of Battery Models

The purpose of this document is to demonstrate the use of the Extended Kalman Filter as a tool for battery state estimation and the estimation of battery state of charge. The mathematical details based on the equivalent circuit model are presented followed by an electrochemical engineering model. A simplified first-order model is used to demonstrate the procedure followed by second and third-order models. Next a simplified electrochemistry model is presented along with observer development. State observability is calculated for the simpler equivalent circuit models and the simplified electrochemistry model. An outline of the battery model parameter identification method is presented, and model performance based on experimental and flight data is demonstrated.
