Influence of Combustion Gas Temperatures on Piston Deposits for Diesel and Ammonia Dual-Fuel Combustion

As new fuels are adopted for marine engines, it is necessary to understand their impact on lubricant performance. In order to evaluate the performance of existing lubricants and inform the development of new ones, a deposit control test protocol has been developed using the ExxonMobil Enterprise two-stroke marine diesel research engine. Repeated tests at the target speed/load operating condition but different thermal conditions show that the temperature of the combustion gases is a key driver in the formation of deposits on piston surfaces, impacting both the quantity of deposits and whether they are hard or gummy. These impacts are examined for diesel combustion as well as ammonia dual-fuel combustion. Among alternative marine fuels, ammonia has perhaps the most unanswered questions regarding interactions with cylinder lubricants. The influence of ammonia dual-fuel combustion on the thermal conditions experienced by the lubricant are discussed. Scrape down oil samples were collected after operation with ammonia for analysis and comparison with fresh oil. Chemical analysis using a GC/MS instrument did not show significant permanent chemical changes in the lubricant due to ammonia exposure.

Preparation And Analysis Of Specimens Of Ablative Materials

Procedure for chemical analysis of specimens of silicone-based ablative thermal-insulation materials SLA-561 and MA25 involves acid digestion of specimens to prepare them for analysis by inductively-coupled-plasma/atomic-emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES). In comparison with atomic-absorption spectroscopy (AAS), ICP/AES is faster and more accurate than AAS. Results of analyses stored in data base, used to trace variations in concentrations of chemical elements in materials during long-term storage, and used in timely manner in investigations of failures. Acid-digestion portion of procedure applied to other thermal-insulation materials containing room-temperature-vulcanizing silicones and enables instrumental analysis of these materials.

Ultraviolet stability and contamination analysis of Spectralon diffuse reflectance material

A detailed chemical analysis was carried out on Spectralon, a highly Lambertian, diffuse reflectance material. Results of this investigation unambiguously identified the presence of an organic (hydrocarbon) impurity intrinsic to the commercial material. This impurity could be removed by a vacuum bake-out procedure and was identified as the cause of optical changes (degradation) that occur in the material when exposed to UV light. It was found that when this impurity was removed, the Spectralon material was photochemically stable and maintained its reflectance properties even after extensive solar UV exposure.

Sudbury project (University of Muenster-Ontario Geological Survey): Petrology, chemistry, and origin of breccia formations

Within the Sudbury Project of the University of Muenster and the Ontario Geological Survey special emphasis was put on the breccia formations exposed at the Sudbury structure (SS) because of their crucial role for the impact hypothesis. They were mapped and sampled in selected areas of the north, east, and south ranges of the SS. The relative stratigraphic positions of these units are summarized. Selected samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, SEM, microprobe, XRF and INAA, Rb-Sr and SM-Nd-isotope geochemistry, and carbon isotope analysis. The results of petrographic and chemical analysis for those stratigraphic units that were considered the main structural elements of a large impact basin are summarized.

Chemical Fingerprinting of Materials Developed Due to Environmental Issues

Instrumental chemical analysis methods are developed and used to chemically fingerprint new and modified External Tank materials made necessary by changing environmental requirements. Chemical fingerprinting can detect and diagnose variations in material composition. To chemically characterize each material, fingerprint methods are selected from an extensive toolbox based on the material's chemistry and the ability of the specific methods to detect the material's critical ingredients. Fingerprint methods have been developed for a variety of materials including Thermal Protection System foams, adhesives, primers, and composites.
