Scalable GPS Data Logging To Support Advanced Fleet Analysis

This highlight details the key takeaways from a project that utilized NLR's Fleet Research, Energy Data, and Insights (FleetREDI) data analysis pipeline. National Laboratory of the Rockies researchers developed and demonstrated low-cost, open-source Arduino data loggers with 3D-printed cases that are compatible with global navigational systems and built with components available ubiquitously worldwide, enabling cost-effective collection and analysis of fleet operational data. Validated on an overseas transit bus fleet, NLR analysis showed that, with sufficient charging opportunities, 90% of observed duty cycles could be accomplished by electric buses with no modifications to operations.

Validating Simulated Models of Energy Consumption by a Battery Electric Motorcoach: A real-world deployment in a harsh climate.

Many efforts have been made to simulate energy consumption of battery electric buses (BEBs) to optimize their deployment into existing fleets. The models produced, however, are rarely validated against real-world consumption data, limiting their generalizability and widespread application to fleets around the US. Furthermore, a major concern specific to BEBs is the effects of harsh climates on their performance. We build upon the state-of-the-art energy consumption modeling techniques developed for BEBs and apply them to a unique geographic context and a unique electrified vehicle. This geography, climate, and vehicle further the existing understanding of the factors affecting medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles (MHDEVs) by allowing for new relationships to be tested and by assessing the generalizability of known relationships to new contexts. We find that temperature is less predictive of energy consumption for the battery electric motorcoach (BEM) in the case study environment than it is for BEBs in other studies. A mitigating factor that we presume to be working on the relationship between temperature and energy consumption is the fact that the BEM route does not stop between origin and destination to exchange passengers, and in turn, conditioned cabin air. Our model also incorporates wind speed and direction relative to travel, which is a novel contribution of our methodology. Results from our study are helpful for transit service planners, fleet operators, and logistics firms for improving their ability to predict performance of potential deployments of MHDEVs into existing operations.

Towards Secure Autonomous Vehicles: An Integrated Edge and Multi-Modal Machine Learning Framework for Intrusion Detection

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are vulnerable to cyberattacks targeting both internal communication networks and external perception sensors. While edge-based intrusion de- tection for Controller Area Network (CAN) buses offers real-time protection, it cannot detect cross-modal threats. Conversely, multi-modal fusion approaches improve coverage but often lack efficiency for in-vehicle deployment. This thesis integrates two complemen- tary solutions: (1) a lightweight, edge-deployable machine learning framework for CAN bus intrusion detection, and (2) a late-fusion system combining CAN FD and LiDAR data. Together, they form a hierarchical defense capable of handling single-modality and coordi- nated attacks. Simulations show that CAN-only models reach 93% accuracy on simulated DoS, spoofing, replay, and fuzzy attacks, while the fusion system achieves 0.87 AUC and 0.82 F1-score at 2 ms latency. This unified framework establishes a scalable, explainable, and field-ready strategy for AV cybersecurity.

NXREFINE

NXRefine implements a complete workflow for both data acquisition and reduction of single crystal diffuse x-ray scattering collected as a series of area detector frames during continuous sample rotation. The data are stored in HDF5 files, which conform to the NeXus data format standard. These files contain a comprehensive set of metadata, including the incident wavelength, powder calibration scans used to define detector distances, beam centers, and yaw, pitch, and roll corrections. Automated peak searches of the three-dimensional data arrays define a set of Bragg peaks that are used to define an orientation matrix, defined according to Busing and Levy, which is then used to transform the data from angular coordinates to reciprocal space coordinates using the CCTW program. Multiple rotations at different detector translations and offset rotation axes are combined to ensure that there are no gaps in the reconstructed data, and allow the construction of masks to eliminate detector artifacts due to Compton scattering within the sensor layers. Finally, the data can be transformed into 3D-ΔPDF maps using the punch-and-fill method after symmetrization.

Levenberg–Marquardt multi-classification using hinge loss function

Incorporating higher-order optimization functions, such as Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) have revealed better generalizable solutions for deep learning problems. However, these higher-order optimization functions suffer from very large processing time and training complexity especially as training datasets become large, such as in multi-view classification problems, where finding global optima is a very costly problem. To solve this issue, we develop a solution for LM-enabled classification with, to the best of knowledge first-time implementation of hinge loss, for multiview classification. Hinge loss allows the neural network to converge faster and perform better than other loss functions such as logistic or square loss rates. Here we prove our method by experimenting with various multiclass classification challenges of varying complexity and training data size. The empirical results show the training time and accuracy rates achieved, highlighting how our method outperforms in all cases, especially when training time is limited. Our paper presents important results in the relationship between optimization and loss functions and how these can impact deep learning problems.

A next-generation liquid xenon observatory for dark matter and neutrino physics

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

Do optimization methods in deep learning applications matter?

With advances in deep learning, exponential data growth and increasing model complexity, developing efficient optimization methods are attracting much research attention. Several implementations favor the use of Conjugate Gradient (CG) and Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) as being practical and elegant solutions to achieve quick convergence, however, these optimization processes also present many limitations in learning across deep learning applications. Recent research is exploring higher-order optimization functions as better approaches, but these present very complex computational challenges for practical use. Comparing first and higher-order optimization functions, in this paper, our experiments reveal that Levemberg-Marquardt (LM) significantly supersedes optimal convergence but suffers from very large processing time increasing the training complexity of both, classification and reinforcement learning problems. Our experiments compare off-the-shelf optimization functions(CG, SGD, LM and L-BFGS) in standard CIFAR, MNIST, CartPole and FlappyBird experiments. The paper presents arguments on which optimization functions to use and further, which functions would benefit from parallelization efforts to improve pretraining time and learning rate convergence.
