From Failure to Insight: Analyzing Disk Breakdowns in Large-Scale HPC Environments

Disk failure data provides valuable insights for preventing failures, enhancing storage robustness, guiding system design and deployment, and ensuring reliable operations at data centers. This paper introduces two disk failure datasets collected from large-scale HPC production environments over the past five years, comprising over 5,000 failure records from more than 40,000 disks. We analyzed these datasets across multiple dimensions, including temporal, spatial, and relational trends, and performed a comprehensive reliability assessment. Our analysis yielded numerous observations and insights that influence various operational aspects of HPC storage systems. We believe this study offers a holistic understanding of disk failure trends likely to interest the HPC storage community.

Effect of frequency and applied voltage of an atmospheric-pressure dielectric-barrier discharge on breakdown and hydroxyl-radical generation with a liquid electrode

This work examines the effect of the frequency and peak applied voltage on hydroxyl-radical generation in a dielectric-barrier plasma discharge between a metallic needle electrode and one electrode covered with dielectric. The authors examine a system that can expose up to 96 liquid samples in an automated fashion without human intervention beyond setting the initial software configuration. Then, hydroxylradical concentration, measured through coumarin fluorescence, was measured for 5 s plasma exposures generated under different highvoltage conditions with frequencies from 2 to 16 kHz and amplitudes from 4 to 9 kV. Their results show that an increase in frequency and/or applied voltage, within the range prescribed above and the limits of the high-voltage power supply, can yield up to a 150% increase in fluorescence with an equivalent hydroxyl-radical increase. Applications using typical previous methods, such as the Fenton Reaction, are limited in that they continuously generate hydroxyl radicals over millisecond and longer intervals. These results establish the electrical parameters that can now be applied to polymers, like proteins, which show three dimensional structures that are flexible and fluctuate on a microsecond and nanosecond time scale, with hydroxyl-radical generation on this time scale using this device. Additionally, plasma exposures may be optimized for a great variety of proteins, devices and techniques, where hydroxyl-radical generation is of utmost importance, reducing exposure time and potential subjection of samples to harmful side effects.

VEGFA165 gene therapy ameliorates blood-labyrinth barrier breakdown and hearing loss

Millions of people are affected by hearing loss. Hearing loss is frequently caused by noise or aging and often associated with loss of pericytes. Pericytes populate the small vessels in the adult cochlea. However, their role in different types of hearing loss is largely unknown. Using an inducible and conditional pericyte depletion mouse model and noise-exposed mouse model, we show that loss of pericytes leads to marked changes in vascular structure, in turn leading to vascular degeneration and hearing loss. In vitro, using advanced tissue explants from pericyte fluorescence reporter models combined with exogenous donor pericytes, we show that pericytes, signaled by VEGF isoform A165 (VEGFA165), vigorously drive new vessel growth in both adult and neonatal mouse inner ear tissue. In vivo, the delivery of an adeno-associated virus serotype 1–mediated (AAV1–mediated) VEGFA165 viral vector to pericyte-depleted or noise-exposed animals prevented and regenerated lost pericytes, improved blood supply, and attenuated hearing loss. These studies provide the first clear-cut evidence that pericytes are critical for vascular regeneration, vascular stability, and hearing in adults. The restoration of vascular function in the damaged cochlea, including in noise-exposed animals, suggests that VEGFA165 gene therapy could be a new strategy for ameliorating vascular associated hearing disorders.

Breakdown of the single-collision condition for soft x-ray high harmonic generation in noble gases

High harmonic generation (HHG) in atomic gases is generally assumed to originate from photoelectrons that are not perturbed by neighboring particles. In this paper, we study theoretically and experimentally the regime where this approximation breaks down. At high laser intensities, we experimentally find that producing soft x-rays beyond this single-collision condition leads to a strong reduction of the coherent HHG response and appearance of incoherent radiation. We generalize our results to phase-matched HHG with mid-infrared drivers, and determine that a minimum pulse energy is needed to simultaneously phase match the HHG process and keep photoelectrons unperturbed by surrounding particles. Therefore, while previous research showed that HHG efficiency is independent of the driving pulse energy if other experimental parameters are scaled accordingly, we find that this rule no longer applies for high photon energies. Our study thus provides important guidelines for the laser parameters needed for the generation of high flux soft x-ray high harmonics.

Breakdown of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Installation Costs

The plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) market is receiving help from the current political climate, incentives at the federal and state levels, excessive cost of petroleum fuel, growing focus on climate solutions, increasing investment and direction by automobile manufacturers and increased awareness through media reports and advertising. Increasingly, the transportation industry, in both the United States and many other countries, is aimed at electric motive energy where practical. Increased investment in research and development have led to increasing vehicle range and lower battery costs; both of which have been deterrents in the past. The increasing demand for PEVs (consisting of the battery electric vehicle [BEV] and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle [PHEV], is challenged by the need for charging infrastructure to support these vehicles. The BEV relies totally on the on-board battery to supply the motive energy while the PHEV utilizes its battery and an installed internal combustion engine (ICE). The maximum benefit is achieved by using the battery power as much as possible. This arrangement requires the use of battery charging equipment, known as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).

Synthetic Microbial Consortium for Biological Breakdown and Conversion of Lignin

The plant polymer lignin is the most abundant renewable source of aromatics on the planet and conversion of it to valuable fuels and chemicals is critical to the economic viability of a lignocellulosic biofuels industry and to meeting the DOE’s 2022 goal of $\$2.50$/gallon mean biofuel selling price. Presently, there is no efficient way of converting lignin into valuable commodities. Current biological approaches require mixtures of expensive ligninolytic enzymes and engineered microbes. This project was aimed at circumventing these problems by discovering commensal relationships among fungi and bacteria involved in biological lignin utilization and using this knowledge to engineer microbial communities capable of converting lignin into renewable fuels and chemicals. Essentially, we aimed to learn from, mimic and improve on nature. We discovered fungi that synergistically work together to degrade lignin, engineered fungal systems to increase expression of the required enzymes and engineered organisms to produce products such as biodegradable plastics precursors.
