Detection of CN emission in Comet P/Halley

The first detection of the CN 3883 A band in emission in Comet P/Halley (1982) in February 1985 is reported. The detection technique, which is described, used blind offsets from secondary reference stars to the comet's predicted position, and involved plotting the comet's track on an enlargement of an appropriate section of the Palomar Sky Survey E plates. The strong solar continuum in the resulting cometary spectrum demonstrates the dominance of the dust reflection spectrum and the reflection from the nucleus. The 3883 A feature is identified with the v = 0 band sequence of the blue system of CN; no other significant features were identified in the spectrum.

Short range forecasting of sea breeze generated thunderstorms at the Kennedy Space Center: A real-time experiment using a primitive equation mesoscale numerical model

The operational efficiency of using guidance from a mesoscale numerical model to improve sea breeze thunderstorm forecasts at and around the Shuttle landing strip was assessed. The Prognostic Three-Dimensional Mesoscale (P3DM) model, developed as a sea breeze model, reveals a strong correlation between regions of mesoscale convergence and the triggering of sea breeze convection thunderstorms. The P3DM was modified to generate stability parameters familiar to the operational forecaster. In addition to the mesoscale fields of wind, vertical motion, moisture, temperature, a stability indicator, a combination of model-predicted K and Lifted Indices and the maximum grid cell vertical motion, were proposed and tested. Results of blind tests indicate that a forecaster, provided with guidance derived from model output, could improve local thunderstorm forecasts.

DSS 14 antenna calibrations for GSSR/VLA Saturn radar experiments

The DSS 14 pointing and gain were calibrated to support X-band bistatic radar observations of Saturn's rings. The observations used the Goldstone Solar System Radar and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array (VLA) in Socorro, New Mexico. The pointing calibrations were based on conscan offset data collected during Voyager 1 and 2 support passes. The conscan data show angle-of-arrival sensing with no bias and 0.3 mdeg 1-sigma error. Using the calibrations, demonstrated blind pointing performance on Saturn was less than 3 mdeg 1-sigma error. Meteorological observations at the site were used to reduce elevation errors caused by atmospheric refraction. The techniques used corrected about one-third of the error-poorer than expected performance.

Lack of effects of astemizole on vestibular ocular reflex, motion sickness, and cognitive performance in man

Astemizole was orally administered to 20 subjects in a randomized, double-blind design to assess the efficacy of this peripherally active antihistamine as an antimotion sickness drug possessing no central side-effects. Measures of vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) were made to evaluate the agent as a selective vestibular depressant. Following one week of orally administered astemizole (30 mg daily), a Staircase Profile Test, a VOR test, and a variety of tests of cognitive performance were administered. These tests revealed no statistically significant effects of astemizole. This leads to the conclusion that, although the drug probably reaches the peripheral vestibular apparatus in man by crossing the blood-vestibular barrier, a selective peripheral antihistamine (H1) action is inadequate to control motion sickness induced through cross-coupled accelerative semicircular canal stimulation in a rotating chair.

High-resolution pulse-counting array detectors for imaging and spectroscopy at ultraviolet wavelengths

The performance characteristics of multianode microchannel array (MAMA) detector systems which have formats as large as 256 x 1024 pixels and which have application to imaging and spectroscopy at UV wavelengths are evaluated. Sealed and open-structure MAMA detector tubes with opaque CsI photocathodes can determine the arrival time of the detected photon to an accuracy of 100 ns or better. Very large format MAMA detectors with CsI and Cs2Te photocathodes and active areas of 52 x 52 mm (2048 x 2048 pixels) will be used as the UV solar blind detectors for the NASA STIS.

The Mark III stellar interferometer

The Mark III interferometer is an operational long baseline stellar interferometer on Mt. Wilson with four-possible baseline configurations from 9m NE-SW to 20m N-S. The interferometer was designed to be a highly automated astronomical instrument to measure stellar positions and diameters to a magnitude limit of seven. Initial fringe observations were made in September 1986 with a 12-m N-S baseline. In the following months, semi-automated astrometric and stellar diameter measurements were also made. This paper describes the hardware and software components of the instrument and its operational characteristics. The interferometer has several novel features. One is the use of optimal estimation and control algorithms (e.g. Kalman filters) in the control loops. Another is the ability to operate both as a closed-loop phased interferometer and eventually as an open-loop or absolute coherent interferometer. High thermal stability and mechanical accuracy should permit the instrument to point blind at an astronomical object and maintain optical path equality to within the limits set by the atmosphere. In this absolute interferometric mode of operation, it should be possible to observe faint astronomical objects that are too dim for phase tracking. In theory, measurements of amplitude, group delay, and closure phase will be possible to 14 mag.

Scan-independent slot arrays with parasitic wire arrays in stratified medium

The effect of a parasitic wire array on the scan admittance of a slot array has been investigated. Structures considered can consist of an infinite slot array and an arbitrary number of parasitic infinte arrays of piecewise linear wires, all arrays being embedded in a stratified medium. These include, as particular cases, phased arrays of Clavin elements. Expressing the fields from the arrays as plane waves, a procedure similar to the periodic moment method for infinite periodic structures is set up to obtain the the scan admittance of the slot array. Scan admittances are presented for a slot array with monopole arrays in free space, and a slot array with a tilted dipole array in a stratified medium. Blind spots at which the incident energy is mainly reflected rather than transmitted were found. Results obtained indicate the possibility of using parasitic wire arrays for scan compensation of active slot arrays.

A technique for solving constraint satisfaction problems using Prolog's definite clause grammars

A new technique for solving constraint satisfaction problems using Prolog's definite clause grammars is presented. It exploits the fact that the grammar rule notation can be viewed as a state exchange notation. The novel feature of the technique is that it can perform informed as well as blind search. It provides the Prolog programmer with a new technique for application to a wide range of design, scheduling, and planning problems.

Knowledge acquisition for case-based reasoning systems

Case-based reasoning (CBR) is a simple idea: solve new problems by adapting old solutions to similar problems. The CBR approach offers several potential advantages over rule-based reasoning: rules are not combined blindly in a search for solutions, solutions can be explained in terms of concrete examples, and performance can improve automatically as new problems are solved and added to the case library. Moving CBR for the university research environment to the real world requires smooth interfaces for getting knowledge from experts. Described are the basic elements of an interface for acquiring three basic bodies of knowledge that any case-based reasoner requires: the case library of problems and their solutions, the analysis rules that flesh out input problem specifications so that relevant cases can be retrieved, and the adaptation rules that adjust old solutions to fit new problems.

The effects of atmospheric turbulence on precision optical measurements used for antenna-pointing compensation

Blind pointing of the Deep Space Network (DSN) 70-meter antennas can be improved if distortions of the antenna structure caused by unpredictable environmental loads can be measured in real-time, and the resulting boresight shifts evaluated and incorporated into the pointing control loops. The measurement configuration of a proposed pointing compensation system includes an optical range sensor that measures distances to selected points on the antenna surface. The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the accuracy of optical distance measurements and a method to make in-situ determinations of turbulence-induced measurement errors are discussed.

Exponential sensor array geometry and simulation

The polar exponential arrays whose geometric parameters are presently analyzed have proven superior to X-Y raster imaging sensors when wide FOV, high central resolution, and rotation- and zoom-invariance are required; attractive applications for such arrays are in spacecraft docking/tracking/stationkeeping and mobile robot navigation. Attention is given to optimal designs minimizing sensor configuration and computation requirements, and the relation of geometric parameters to the three-dimensional sensing precision requirements driving sensor design. A method for smooth patching of the 'blind-spot' singularity in the sensor with a uniformly high-resolution 'fovea' is also presented.

The connector space reduction mechanism

The Connector Space Reduction Mechanism (CSRM) is a simple device that can reduce the number of electromechanical devices on the Payload Interface Adapter/Station Interface Adapter (PIA/SIA) from 4 to 1. The device uses simplicity to attack the heart of the connector mating problem for large interfaces. The CSRM allows blind mate connector mating with minimal alignment required over short distances. This eliminates potential interface binding problems and connector damage. The CSRM is compatible with G and H connectors and Moog Rotary Shutoff fluid couplings. The CSRM can be used also with less forgiving connectors, as was demonstrated in the lab. The CSRM is NASA-Goddard exclusive design with patent applied for. The CSRM is the correct mechanism for the PIA/SIA interface as well as other similar berthing interfaces.

Filling in the retinal image

The optics of the eye form an image on a surface at the back of the eyeball called the retina. The retina contains the photoreceptors that sample the image and convert it into a neural signal. The spacing of the photoreceptors in the retina is not uniform and varies with retinal locus. The central retinal field, called the macula, is densely packed with photoreceptors. The packing density falls off rapidly as a function of retinal eccentricity with respect to the macular region and there are regions in which there are no photoreceptors at all. The retinal regions without photoreceptors are called blind spots or scotomas. The neural transformations which convert retinal image signals into percepts fills in the gaps and regularizes the inhomogeneities of the retinal photoreceptor sampling mosaic. The filling-in mechamism plays an important role in understanding visual performance. The filling-in mechanism is not well understood. A systematic collaborative research program at the Ames Research Center and SRI in Menlo Park, California, was designed to explore this mechanism. It was shown that the perceived fields which are in fact different from the image on the retina due to filling-in, control some aspects of performance and not others. Researchers have linked these mechanisms to putative mechanisms of color coding and color constancy.
