Ghidra Galore

SAND2025-00232O Ghidra Galore is a software tool that provides a test harness for running an analysis script in multiple versions of Ghidra, an open-source binary disassembler, using Docker. It allows users to understand how different versions of Ghidra evolve over time by analyzing a corpus of input files. The software includes a Python script that wraps the Docker functionality, simplifying the process of running the analysis script across different Ghidra versions. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Transport properties of gases and binary liquids near the critical point

A status report is presented on the anomalies observed in the behavior of transport properties near the critical point of gases and binary liquids. The shear viscosity exhibits a weak singularity near the critical point. An analysis is made of the experimental data for those transport properties, thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity near the gas-liquid critical point and binary diffusion coefficient near the critical mixing point, that determine the critical slowing down of the thermodynamic fluctuations in the order parameter. The asymptotic behavior of the thermal conductivity appears to be closely related to the asymptotic behavior of the correlation length. The experimental data for the thermal conductivity and diffusivity are shown to be in substantial agreement with current theoretical predictions.

Hot wind from Gamma/2/ Velorum observed in the ultraviolet carbon lines

The close binary system Gamma(2) Vel, consisting of a WC8 and an O9 I star, has been observed in the ultraviolet at various phases. Preliminary analysis of selected data shows that the temperature of the stellar wind from this binary increases outward. This suggests that an additional source of energy other than radiation pressure may exist for the wind. The mass flow occurs in all directions from the binary. However, there is evidence of an increase in the mass flow through the third Lagrangian point, although from the extant data it is not possible to decide whether or not a similar increase in the mass outflow occurs through the second Lagrangian point. There is also evidence of mass surge, which probably is independent of orbital phase.

Evaluation of artificial neural network performance for classification of potato plants infected with potato virus Y using spectral data on multiple varieties and genotypes

Potato virus Y (Potyviridae, PVY) is a plant virus that poses a significant threat to potato producers on a global basis. The pathogen has disrupted seed potato supplies and negatively impacted yield and quality of commercial potato crops. The potato industry currently manages PVY infection levels via insecticide applications, regional seed certification programs that rely on field scouting to visually assess individual plants for infection status, and destructive and costly tissue sampling coupled with laboratory assays. Despite these efforts, PVY continues to confound potato industry stakeholders resulting in economic harm. Remote sensing and machine learning provide for the development of new tools to more accurately detect and spatially quantify PVY-infected plants versus the current state of the art. However, there is a need to understand how the occurrence of many different potato varieties impact the dynamics of developing models to detect potato plants impacted with PVY and their potential effectiveness. This study evaluates classification modelling outcomes using spectral datasets collected in different temporal and spatial environments (greenhouse and a production field) on multiple potato varieties consisting of labelled instances of plants infected with PVY and those not infected with the virus. A modelling framework was developed to support iterative modelling runs using artificial neural network (ANN) architectures configured as binary classifiers to develop sample populations to support statistical analysis on model performance using specific spectral subsets. When using spectral data to detect PVY-infected plants, ANN models achieved the highest mean accuracy of 0.894 on a single variety. Conversely, the same ANN model architecture only achieved a mean accuracy of 0.575 on a spectral data set representing 29 potato breeding lines. Additionally, statistical analysis indicates spectral regions including the red edge, near infrared and shortwave infrared contain more important spectral features for the ANN classifier introduced in this research.

Revisiting the SGTE lattice stability of bcc aluminum

The CALPHAD framework rests on the ability to assign well-defined free energies to all phases, including mechanically unstable ones. Given the experimental difficulties associated with the latter, researchers have turned to computational methods to obtain a theoretically justified definition of the free energy of mechanically unstable phases. Recently, a method called “inflection detection” has been shown to yield free energies that are broadly consistent with the current SGTE (Scientific Group Thermodata Europe) standard for pure elements, which were obtained through an extrapolation of stable solid solutions free energies towards unstable end members. Despite this general agreement, apparent failures for a few elements stand out, notably for the bcc–fcc enthalpy difference for the common element Al. Furthermore we revisit the definition of the bcc Al enthalpy and show that a careful CALPHAD-based analysis of enthalpy trends in five different mechanically stable binary solid solutions in fact does agree very well with the inflection-detection approach.

Quantum maximum entropy closure for small flavor coherence

Quantum angular moment transport schemes are an important avenue toward describing neutrino flavor mixing phenomena in dense astrophysical environments such as supernovae and merging neutron stars. Successful implementation will require new closure relations that go beyond those used in classical transport. In this paper, we derive the first analytic expression for a quantum M1 closure, valid in the limit of small flavor coherence, based on the maximum entropy principle. We verify that the resulting closure relation has the appropriate limits and characteristic speeds in the diffusive and free-streaming regimes. We then use this new closure in a moment linear stability analysis to search for fast flavor instabilities in a binary neutron star merger simulation and find better results as compared with previously designed, ad hoc , semiclassical closures.

Concerning the origin of novae and U Geminorum stars

The dynamical stability of the contact component in a semi-detached binary system is investigated by a linear time dependent analysis. The boundary condition imposed on the photosphere by the Roche lobe is assumed to be one of constant pressure over the whole surface of the lobe, which is treated as being spherically symmetric. The eigenvalues of the linear equation of motion are evaluated for sequences of stellar envelope models under the constraint of this boundary condition. An extensive region in the Hertzprung-Russell diagram is found to be dynamically unstable. This region coincides almost precisely with that predicted by a previous quasi-static study. Time scales for the growth of the instability are also evaluated. Color observations of several novae and U Geminorum stars are discussed in an attempt to provide semi-empirical tests of the proposed theoretical model of the outbursts. In particular the track in the H-R diagram of the U Geminorum star, EM Cygni, is shown to be consistent with an outburst which is purely a temperature change at constant radius, as is demanded by the theory.

Finite-rate chemistry effects upon convective and radiative heating of an atmospheric entry vehicle

A mathematical model of the aerothermochemical environment along the stagnation line of a planetary return spacecraft using an ablative thermal protection system was developed and solved for conditions typical of atmospheric entry from planetary missions. The model, implemented as a FORTRAN 4 computer program, was designed to predict viscous, reactive and radiative coupled shock layer structure and the resulting body heating rates. The analysis includes flow field coupling with the ablator surface, binary diffusion, coupled line and continuum radiative and equilibrium or finite rate chemistry effects. The gas model used includes thermodynamic, transport, kinetic and radiative properties of air and ablation product species, including 19 chemical species and 16 chemical reactions. Specifically, the impact of nonequilibrium chemistry effects upon stagnation line shock layer structure and body heating rates was investigated.

The apsidal motion of the eccentric eclipsing binary DI Herculis - An apparent discrepancy with general relativity

The apsidal motion of the eccentric eclipsing binary DI Herculis (HD 175227) is determined from an analysis of the available observations and eclipse timings from 1959 to 1984. Least squares solutions to the primary and secondary minima extending over an 84-yr interval yielded a small advance of periastron omega dot of 0.65 deg/100 yr + or - 0.18/100 yr. The observed advance of the periastron is about one seventh of the theoretical value of 4.27 deg/100 yr that is expected from the combined relativistic and classical effects. The discrepancy is about -3.62 deg/100 yr, or a magnitude of about 20 sigma. Classical mechanisms which explain the discrepancy are discussed, together with the possibility that there may be problems with general relativity itself.

V803 Aquilae: A newborn W Ursae Majoris Siamese twin?

A complete photometric analysis of BVRI photometry of the physically compact, eclipsing binary V803 Aquilae is presented. Six mean epochs of minimum light were determined from observations covering three primary and three secondary eclipses. A period study covering 54 years of observation or nearly 77,000 orbital revolutions reveals three distinct eras of constant period with two major period jumps of +0.1 s and -0.3 s. The light curves shows that the primary and secondary eclipse depths are identical in V, and are nearly identical in B, R, and I, indicating that the components have nearly the same temperatures. Standard magnitudes were determined and a reddening estimate was made. A simultaneous solution of the four light curves was computed using the Wilson-Devinney synthetic light-curve code. The solution indicates that the system consists of twin approximately K4 stars in shallow contact with a fill-out of approximately 8%. A mass ratio of 1.000 was computed with a negligible temperature difference of only 6 K. Thus, based on our purely photometric solution, V803 Aql is made up of 'Siamese' (contact) twin components. Theory would indicate that the twins have just recently come into contact, and the lack of other equal-mass W Ursae Majoris systems would indicate that it is in a very transient or unusual state.

Transformation of a ceramic precursor to a biomedical (metallic) alloy: Part I – sinterability of Ta 2 O 5 and TiO 2 mixed oxides

Mixed Ta 2 O 5 – TiO 2 binary system was studied by a combination of differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) techniques. Different compositions of the mixed oxide powders were fabricated by ball–milling the powdered compositions, pelletizing the homogenized composite powders, and heating the green pellets in air at different temperatures for fixed time intervals. The sintered pellets were evaluated and characterized with respect to porosity, morphology, and phase distribution. DTA runs of the un-sintered powders indicated the onset temperatures for both exothermic and endothermic changes in the binary system. Significant amount of sintering was observed to take place at temperatures higher than 900 °C. Both room and high temperature X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited consistency in phase formation. A ternary compound (TaTiO 4 ) and a ternary solid solution (Ti 0.33 Ta 0.67 O 2 ) were observed to form in both room and high temperatures in addition to the respective binary phases (Ta 2 O 5 and TiO 2 ). A sintering temperature in the range 900–1000 °C was observed to be adequate to achieve the requisite mechanical strength and optimum internal porosity (40–48%) for subsequent electrochemical polarization experiments.

Simultaneous X-Ray and UV Spectroscopy of the Symbiotic HD 154791

Our program consisted of three observations of the symbiotic neutron stadred giant binary 4U 1700+24/HD154791. Using an earlier 2002 TOO observation made in response to a new transient X-ray outburst, we had previously discovered a redshifted O VII line and submitted a paper on this discovery to the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. In these new observations, we from analysis of the 2002 TOO observation of the symbiotic neutron-star binary 4U 1700+24, made in response to detection of a new transient outburst, we discovered a redshifted Oxygen VIII line (in collaboration with A. Tiengo of UVA), and submitted a paper on this result to A&A. Analysis of the three subsequent observations has found a number of other features also due to ionized oxygen, which we have found to vary as the source transits from outburst to quiescence. A paper describing these observations is being prepared for submission to the Astrophysical Journal, led by Co-I Duncan Galloway.

Jupiter and Io - A binary magnetosphere

A qualitative assessment is presented of Voyager 1 and 2 data analysis and theoretical interpretation, regarding the Io torus and Jovian aurora, dominant magnetospheric components, plasma waves and radio emissions, with emphasis on the difficulty of accounting for either the Jupiter aurora or Io torus EUV emission luminosities in energetic terms. Jupiter's middle atmosphere is also considered, with attention to observations of corotating ions, their ambiguities and their implications. After a discussion of the question of Jupiter's interaction with the solar wind, as manifested by its magnetic tail, terrestrial magnetospherics are invoked in the construction of a tentative unification of observed phenomena which is within the latitude afforded by the current state of data reduction.

4U 1626-67 - A prograde spinning X-ray pulsar in a 2500 s binary system

The binary period of 4U 1626-67 was found from an analysis of its optical pulsations. A single lower frequency sideband of the 2.4% amplitude 7.68-s optical pulsations from this X-ray pulsar was detected on at least three different nights in Fourier transforms of high-speed photometry obtained with the CTIO 4 m telescope. The 0.42% sidelobe pulsations have a frequency which is 0.4011(2) mHz lower than the frequency of the direct pulsations near 130.26 mHz. The weaker sidelobe pulsations are interpreted as arising from X-ray to optical reprocessing on the companion star and are shifted to the lower frequency by the rotation frequency of the binary orbit because the X-ray pulsar spins in the same sense as the orbital motion (direct or prograde).

Interactions in Massive Colliding Wind Binaries

The most massive stars (M> 60 Solar Mass) play crucial roles in altering the chemical and thermodynamic properties of their host galaxies. Stellar mass is the fundamental stellar parameter that determines their ancillary properties and which ultimately determines the fate of these stars and their influence on their galactic environs. Unfortunately, stellar mass becomes observationally and theoretically less well constrained as it increases. Theory becomes uncertain mostly because very massive stars are prone to strong, variable mass loss which is difficult to model. Observational constraints are uncertain too. Massive stars are rare, and massive binary stars (needed for dynamical determination of mass) are rarer still: and of these systems only a fraction have suitably high orbital inclinations for direct photometric and spectroscopic radial-velocity analysis. Even in the small number of cases in which a high-inclination binary near the upper mass limit can be identified, rotational broadening and contamination of spectral line features from thick circumstellar material (either natal clouds or produced by strong stellar wind driven mass loss from one or both of he stellar components) biases the analysis. In the wilds of the upper HR diagram, we're often left with indirect and circumstantial means of determining mass, a rather unsatisfactory state of affairs.
