Beta-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy using TexAT

β-delayed charged-particle emission is a sensitive probe of three-body decays in light nuclei. Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) offer a significant advantage over traditional charged-particle spectroscopy techniques due to a low-energy threshold and a high-geometric efficiency (≈ 4π) which are essential for use with radioactive ion beams where the beam intensities are limited. The technique for high-sensitivity spectroscopy of β-delayed charged-particle emission is shown to be possible using the Texas Active Target (TexAT) TPC in conjunction with the General Electronics for TPCs (GET) system. The benchmark case studied was that of 12 N β-decay to the first α-unbound state in 12 C, the Hoyle state. Here, half-life and branching ratio measurements are presented and are in good agreement with previous studies. The efficacy of using TPCs to study such a near-threshold state and disentangle the three-body dynamics of the decay products is demonstrated.

Coexistence of octupole deformation and beta and gamma vibrational bands in 148 Ce

From γ-γ-γ and γ-γ-γ-γ coincidence studies of spontaneous fission of 252 Cf, new high spin states in 148 Ce were identified. The octupole bands with s = +1 and s = -1 are expanded with spins with 28 + and 18 - , respectively. Importantly, a 1γ vibrational band has been established up to 14 + and a 1β vibrational band up to 6 + . The levels in γ and β bands in 148 Ce are compared systematically to those in neighboring 150 Nd and 152 Sm isotones. Further, this comparison informs the role of deformation and shape transition in this mass region. New 3 - and 5 - members of the s = +1 octupole band were observed.

Systematic analysis of double-beta decay half lives

Here, evaluated 2β – (2ν) half-lives and their systematics were reexamined in the framework of a phenomenological approach. Decay rate dependence on nuclear deformation, decay energy, shape coexistence, and forbidden transitions was observed. The following analysis showed distinct impacts of decay energy on half lives, and deformation parameters on effective nuclear matrix elements. These findings were used to predict T 1/2 for 36 isotopes of interest. Present work results were compared with published data.

Lattice QCD Inputs for nuclear double beta decay

Second order β -decay processes with and without neutrinos in the final state are key probes of nuclear physics and of the nature of neutrinos. Neutrinoful double- β decay is the rarest Standard Model process that has been observed and provides a unique test of the understanding of weak nuclear interactions. Observation of neutrinoless double- β decay would reveal that neutrinos are Majorana fermions and that lepton number conservation is violated in nature. While significant progress has been made in phenomenological approaches to understanding these processes, establishing a connection between these processes and the physics of the Standard Model and beyond is a critical task as it will provide input into the design and interpretation of future experiments. The strong-interaction contributions to double- β decay processes are non-perturbative and can only be addressed systematically through a combination of lattice Quantum Chromoodynamics (LQCD) and nuclear many-body calculations. In this review, current efforts to establish the LQCD connection are discussed for both neutrinoful and neutrinoless double- β decay. LQCD calculations of the hadronic contributions to the neutrinoful process $nn → ppe^-e^-\bar{v}_e\bar{v}_e$ and to various neutrinoless pionic transitions are reviewed, and the connections of these calculations to the phenomenology of double- β decay through the use of effective field theory (EFTs) is highlighted. At present, LQCD calculations are limited to small nuclear systems, and to pionic subsystems, and require matching to appropriate EFTs to have direct phenomenological impact. However, these calculations have already revealed qualitatively that there are terms in the EFTs that can only be constrained from double- β decay processes themselves or using inputs from LQCD. Finally, future prospects for direct calculations in larger nuclei are also discussed.

Restructuring of the Lewis Acid Sites in Y-Modified Dealuminated Beta-Zeolite by Hydrothermal Treatment

Yttrium-modified dealuminated Betazeolite (Y-BEA) represents a type of Lewis acid zeolite that has gained attention for its potential to efficiently catalyze the conversion of biomass-derived oxygenates. The structure of the Y active sites and their dynamics during biomass conversion reactions, which normally involve substantial amounts of water, necessitate thorough investigation for the rational design of more active and stable catalysts. Here, we conducted a study where a series of Y-BEA catalysts with different yttrium loadings (1–7 wt.%) were subjected to hydrothermal treatment (450 °C, 20% water) and investigated for their structural and catalytic activity changes through a combination of multiple characterizations and kinetic measurements. The number of acid sites of Y-BEA decreased without a change in acid strength following the hydrothermal treatment, which was confirmed by the results of acid site titration, infrared spectroscopy of probe molecules, and kinetic measurements for probe reactions (acetone aldol condensation). Structural analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurement, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrated that both the zeolite structure and the isolation status of the Y site remain intact after hydrothermal treatment. Further, the Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and operando 1 H and 29 Si magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed the dehydroxylation of Y-BEA induced by hydration-rearrangement-condensation restructuring during the high-temperature steam treatment. Dehydroxylation affects the structure of Y sites by reducing their vicinal silanol sites. In conclusion, this conversion of Lewis acidic Y sites into nonacidic sites is the primary factor behind the change in acid site quantity and catalytic activity on Y-BEA.

A review of the metastable omega phase in beta titanium alloys: the phase transformation mechanisms and its effect on mechanical properties

Since its discovery in 1954, the omega (ω) phase in titanium and its alloys has attracted substantial attention from researchers. The β-to-ω and ω-to-α phase transformations are central to β-titanium alloy design, but the transformation mechanisms have been a subject of debate. With new generations of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, both the spatial resolution and compositional sensitivity of phase transformation analysis have been rapidly improving. Furthermore, this review provides a detailed assessment of the new understanding gained and related debates in this field enabled by advanced characterization methods. Specifically, new insights into the possibility of a coupled diffusional-displacive component in the β-to-ω transformation and key nucleation driving forces for the ω-assisted α phase formation are discussed. Additionally, the influence of ω phase on the mechanical properties of β-titanium alloys is also reviewed. Lastly, a perspective on open questions and future direction for research is discussed.

Isomeric and beta-decay spectroscopy of 173,174 Ho

β-decay spectroscopy of 173,174 Ho (Z = 67, N = 106,107) was conducted at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN by using in-flight fission of a 345-MeV/u 238 U primary beam. A previously unreported isomeric state at 405 keV with half-life of 3.7(12) μs and a spin and parity of (3/2 + ) is identified in 173 Ho. Moreover, a new state with a spin and parity of 9 - was discovered in 174 Er. The experimental log ft values of 5.84(20) and 5.25(18) suggest an allowed-hindered β decay from the ground state of 174 Ho to the K π = 8 - isomeric state in 174 Er. Configuration-constrained potential energy surface (PES) calculations were performed and the predictions are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.

Ab Initio Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Matrix Elements for Ca 48 , Ge 76 , and Se 82

We calculate basis-space converged neutrinoless ββ-decay nuclear matrix elements for the lightest candidates: 48 Ca, 76 Ge, and 82 Se. Starting from initial two- and three-nucleon forces, we apply the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group to construct valence-space Hamiltonians and consistently transformed ββ-decay operators. Here, we find that the tensor component is non-negligible in 76 Ge and 82 Se, and the resulting nuclear matrix elements are overall 25%–45% smaller than those obtained from the phenomenological shell model. While a final matrix element with uncertainties still requires substantial developments, this work nevertheless opens a path toward a true first-principles calculation of neutrinoless ββ decay in all nuclei relevant for ongoing large-scale searches.

Study of the Heater-Coil Electrical Insulation for the HL-LHC Low Beta Quadrupoles

In the framework of the HL-LHC project, the present LHC low-β superconducting quadrupoles will be substituted with higher performance Nb 3 Sn magnets (MQXF) with 11.4 T coil peak field. MQXF coils are impregnated with epoxy resin to reduce risk of stress concentration on the brittle conductor. The magnet quench protection is provided by CLIQ and quench heaters to ensure a redundant system. Quench heaters are impregnated with the coils in order to have suitable thermal contact with them, and to prevent the hot spot temperature from exceeding 350K during normal operation in case of a quench. Quench heaters are insulated from the coil by S-2 Glass and polyimide. Here, the test of the first MQXF prototype (4 m long) MQXFAP1 was stopped by a coil-to-ground short circuit triggered by a heater-to-coil short. This issue triggered a root analysis of the causes of this short. Here we prove that the use of a non-conforming cloth in coil impregnation, further weakened by non-conforming high voltage test, has triggered the shorts. Moreover, we present an analysis of the heater-to-coil insulation strength, showing the role of blistering phenomena and how they are triggered by a combination of magnet powering and heater firing.

Accumulation of Succinyl Coenzyme A Perturbs the Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Succinylome and Is Associated with Increased Susceptibility to Beta-Lactam Antibiotics

mecA -dependent methicillin resistance in MRSA is subject to regulation by numerous accessory factors involved in cell wall biosynthesis, nucleotide signaling, and central metabolism. Here, we report that mutations in the TCA cycle gene, sucC , increased susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics and was accompanied by significant accumulation of succinyl-CoA, which in turn perturbed lysine succinylation in the proteome.

Superallowed Nuclear Beta Decays and Precision Tests of the Standard Model

For many decades, the main source of information on the top-left corner element of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa quark mixing matrix, V ud , was superallowed nuclear β decays with an impressive 0.01% precision. This precision, apart from experimental data, relies on theoretical calculations in which nuclear structure–dependent effects and uncertainties play a prime role. This review is dedicated to a thorough reassessment of all ingredients that enter the extraction of the value of V ud from experimental data. We try to keep balance between historical retrospect and new developments, many of which occurred in just the past 5 years. They have not yet been reviewed in a complete manner, not least because new results are forthcoming. This review aims to fill this gap and offers an in-depth yet accessible summary of all recent developments.

High Precision Penning Trap Measurements of beta-decay Q-values for Neutrino Physics

The 2015 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to Takaaki Kajita and Arthur B. McDonald “for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass”. This fact has wide reaching implications for the standard model of particle physics, nuclear physics, and cosmology. However, important fundamental questions remain: What is the absolute neutrino mass scale? Is the neutrino a Majorana or a Dirac particle? A number of large-scale experiments are underway or are being developed to attempt to answer these questions. Two classes of experiments are direct neutrino mass determination experiments, and searches for neutrinoless double betadecay. This work aimed to aid these experiments via high-precision Q value determinations for the relevant isotopes using Penning trap mass spectrometry (PTMS).

COG Beta-Effective Benchmarks

COG 11.3 calculations with the “new method” using ENDF/B-VIII.0 data are shown to produce results with |C/E – 1| < 3σ in all cases, whereas the other methods produce a few minor outliers. Furthermore, the “new method” using ENDF/B-VIII.0 data is observed to produce “over” and “under” results consistent with 50/50 expectations whereas the other methods appear to be slightly over or under predicting. JEFF-3.3 results are slightly larger overall than ENDF/B-VIII.0 results. In all but a few cases, it is also observed that $F_d/F_t ≥ (vF)_d/(vF)_t ≥ 1 – (k_{prompt}/k_{eff})$ and all estimators produce equivalent results for the most thermal systems. In those other cases, this relation holds within the given statistics.
