Comparison of continuum-continuum and Coulomb-laser-coupling delays from visible to midinfrared wavelengths

We compare the various proposed formulas for CLC and CC delays using analytical and numerical methods across a range of wavelengths spanning visible to midinfrared. We show that one of the CC definitions is nearly equal to the CLC delay over a range of photoelectron energies and wavelengths. We furthermore obtain alternate expressions for the CC delays. These expressions are simpler to use and show close correspondence to the CLC delays. Based on this correspondence, we suggest a correction to the CLC delay for low-energy electrons, where the currently used approximation breaks down. Our work provides guidance for when it is valid to treat CC and CLC delays as being equivalent.

Core-excited states of SF 6 probed with soft-x-ray femtosecond transient absorption of vibrational wave packets

A vibrational wavepacket in SF 6 is created by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering with a few-cycle infrared pulse and mapped simultaneously onto five sulfur core-excited states using table-top soft x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy between 170 to 200 eV. The femtosecond vibrations induce real-time energy shifts of the x-ray absorption, whose amplitude depend strongly on the nature of the core-excited state. The pump laser intensity is used to control the number of vibrational states in the superposition, thereby accessing core-excited levels for various extensions of the S-F stretching motion. This enables the determination of the relative core-level potential energy gradients for the symmetric stretching mode, in good agreement with TDDFT calculations. This experiment demonstrates a new means of characterizing core-excited potential energy curves.

Coupled valence carrier and core-exciton dynamics in WS 2 probed by few-femtosecond extreme ultraviolet transient absorption spectroscopy

Few-femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy, performed with optical 500-1000 nm supercontinuum and broadband XUV pulses (30-50 eV), simultaneously probes dynamics of photoexcited carriers in WS$_{2}$ at the W O$_3$ edge (37-45 eV) and carrier-induced modifications of core-exciton absorption at the W N$_{6,7}$ edge (32-37 eV). Access to continuous core-to-conduction band absorption features and discrete core-exciton transitions in the same XUV spectral region in a semiconductor provides a novel means to investigate the effect of carrier excitation on core-exciton dynamics. The core-level transient absorption spectra, measured with either pulse arriving first to explore both core-level and valence carrier dynamics, reveal that core-exciton transitions are strongly influenced by the photoexcited carriers. A $1.2\pm0.3$ ps hole-phonon relaxation time and a $3.1\pm0.4$ ps carrier recombination time are extracted from the XUV transient absorption spectra from the core-to-conduction band transitions at the W O$_{3}$ edge. Global fitting of the transient absorption signal at the W N$_{6,7}$ edge yields $\sim 10$ fs coherence lifetimes of core-exciton states and reveals that the photoexcited carriers, which alter the electronic screening and band filling, are the dominant contributor to the spectral modifications of core-excitons and direct field-induced changes play a minor role. This work provides a first look at the modulations of core-exciton states by photoexcited carriers and advances our understanding of carrier dynamics in metal dichalcogenides.

The time-resolved atomic, molecular and optical science instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source

The newly constructed time-resolved atomic, molecular and optical science instrument (TMO) is configured to take full advantage of both linear accelerators at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the copper accelerator operating at a repetition rate of 120 Hz providing high per-pulse energy as well as the superconducting accelerator operating at a repetition rate of about 1 MHz providing high average intensity. Both accelerators power a soft X-ray free-electron laser with the new variable-gap undulator section. With this flexible light source, TMO supports many experimental techniques not previously available at LCLS and will have two X-ray beam focus spots in line. Thereby, TMO supports atomic, molecular and optical, strong-field and nonlinear science and will also host a designated new dynamic reaction microscope with a sub-micrometer X-ray focus spot. The flexible instrument design is optimized for studying ultrafast electronic and molecular phenomena and can take full advantage of the sub-femtosecond soft X-ray pulse generation program.
