Systems and methods for monitoring a power-generation module assembly after a power-generation module shutdown event

Embodiments are directed to providing a user interface (UI) that streamlines and simplifies the process of monitoring critical power-generation module (PGM) parameters after a PGM assembly is shutdown. The UI displays, in real-time, indicators corresponding to one or more post-shutdown PGM parameters. The UI provides indications of whether the post-shutdown PGM parameters meet post-shutdown criteria of the PGM assembly. When a post-shutdown PGM parameter does not meet the post-shutdown criteria, a user alert is provided to the user. A protocol may additionally be provided to the user. In some embodiments, the protocol may enable the user to return the PGM assembly to a condition that satisfies the post-shutdown criteria. The protocol may be a safety protocol and/or an asset protection protocol.

Cyber-attack detection, localization, and neutralization for unmanned aerial vehicles

In some embodiments, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (“UAV”) system may be associated with a plurality of monitoring nodes, each monitoring node generating a series of monitoring node values over time that represent operation of the UAV system. An attack detection computer platform may receive the series of current monitoring node values and generate a set of current feature vectors. The attack detection computer platform may access an attack detection model having at least one decision boundary (e.g., created using a set of normal feature vectors a set of attacked feature vectors). The attack detection model may then be executed and the platform may transmit an attack alert signal based on the set of current feature vectors and the at least one decision boundary. According to some embodiments, attack localization and/or neutralization functions may also be provided.

System and method for inspecting parts using dynamic response function

A system and method for the non-destructive testing of additively manufactured parts. An input mechanism excites with an excitation force (e.g., a vibration) an additive manufacturing build structure, which includes a part on a build platform, to induce a dynamic response in the part. An output mechanism (e.g., a non-contact transducer) senses the induced dynamic response in the part. A processor determines and examines the relationship between the response and excitation to identify an indication of a defect in the part, and communicates an alert if the indication is identified. The processor may compare the phase, magnitude, coherence, or time delay of the relationship to a reference relationship and/or may compare the modal frequency or the modal damping to a reference to identify a deviation greater than a pre-established threshold.

Hybrid feature-driven learning system for abnormality detection and localization

A cyber-physical system may have a plurality of monitoring nodes each generating a series of current monitoring node values over time representing current operation of the system. A data-driven features extraction computer platform may receive the series of current monitoring node values and generate current data-driven feature vectors based on the series of current monitoring node values. A residual features extraction computer platform may receive the series of current monitoring node values, execute a system model and utilize a stochastic filter to determine current residual values, and generate current residual-driven feature vectors based on the current residual values. An abnormal detection platform may then receive the current data-driven and residual-driven feature vectors and compare the current data-driven and residual-driven feature vectors with at least one decision boundary associated with an abnormal detection model. An abnormal alert signal may then be transmitted when appropriate based on a result of said comparison.

Advanced Sensor Deployment for Distribution System State Estimation and Fault Identification: Preprint

Distribution systems are currently facing steep operational challenges as a result of the rapidly increasing integration of renewables and other distributed energy resources (DERs)at both the primary and secondary circuit levels. Distribution utilities and system operators have traditionally had some visibility of their primary circuits using low-frequency supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and they have had very poor if not zero visibility of the secondary circuits where the presence of DERs is constantly increasing. Therefore, this paper presents simulation studies to demonstrate the benefits of an advanced, high-fidelity sensor technology, called as the Meta-Alert System (MAS), developed by Electrical Grid Monitoring Ltd. (EGM), on the distribution grid. First, a reliable model of the EGM sensors is developed, and then two use cases - distribution system state estimation (DSSE) and fault identification - are simulated to evaluate the performance of the MAS technology. Simulation results on the Electric Power Research Institute J1feeder demonstrate that the MAS can effectively participate in system-level DSSE programs and can detect and locate faults faster than traditional distribution protection schemes.

Cyberattack Scenarios for the Rancor Microworld Simulator

The digitization of new generation nuclear power plants increases the risk of cyber-physical attacks. Hence, the collection of data from operators that respond to realistic cyberattacks can provide a paramount insight on the correlation of cyber evidence and physical alerts. The simplicity and configurability of the Rancor Microworld Simulator, enables the training of non-expert operators in a PWR environment, and the extensive and tailored collection of data. Therefore, we develop the necessary tools and infrastructure in Rancor that allow such attacks to take place. Additionally, we perform these attacks to examine the attention and situation awareness of operators during malicious infiltrations.

Synchrophasors-based Master State Awareness Estimator for Cybersecurity in Power Grid: Testbed Implementation & Field Demonstration

The integration of distributed energy resources(DERs) and expansion of complex network in the distribution grid requires an advanced distributed state estimator to monitor the grid health at micro-level. The distribution state estimator will improve the situational awareness and resiliency of distributed power system. This paper proposes a synchrophasors-based master state awareness (MSA) estimator to enhance the cybersecurity in distribution grid by providing a real-time estimation of system operating states to control center operators. In this paper, the proposed MSA estimator utilizes only phasor measurements, bus magnitudes and angles, from phasor measurement units (PMUs),deployed in local substations, to estimate the system states and also detects data integrity attacks, such as load tripping attack that disconnects the load. To validate the proof of concept, we implement the proposed methodology in cyber-physical testbed environment at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Electric Grid Security Testbed. Further, to address the “valley of death” and support technology commercialization, field demonstration is also performed at the Critical Infrastructure Test Range Complex(CITRC) at the INL. Our experimental results reveal a promising performance in detecting load tripping attack and providing an accurate situational awareness through an alert visualization dashboard in real-time

System and method for remote detection and location of gas leaks

A system for monitoring for a gas leak from a gas containing structure is disclosed. The system includes a lens that directs an image of a scene of interest through an optical filter onto a detector. The filter is associated with the lens and the filter has one or more passbands that passes wavelengths which match one or more emission or reflectively wavelengths of the gas being monitored. A detector receives the image after the image passes through the lens and the filter. The detector generates image data representing the scene including the gas containing structure. A processor is configured to process the image data by executing machine executable code stored on a memory. The machine executable code processes the image data to identify turbulence flows in the image data such that turbulence flow indicates a gas leak, and generate and send an alert in response to the identification of a turbulence flow.

Accurate Prediction of Algal Biomass Lipid, Protein, and Carbohydrate Composition with Machine Learning Regression Modelling of Near-IR Spectra

During large scale algal biomass cultivation, it is difficult to reliably control relative composition to target levels. Rapid determination of chemical composition is feasible by using near infrared (NIR) spectral data. We sought to build and improve on reliable high-throughput screening prediction method based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) by the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) and associated optimization strategies. The algal biomass sample set was designed and created in an iterative process of culturing in physiologically diverse conditions at the GAI field site, followed by compositional analyses at NREL. The workflow allowed us to identify gaps in compositional space for informing the subsequent cultivation and sampling efforts and generated a high quality set of 210 unique samples with chemical analysis results, spectral scanning data, and cultivation metadata. We observed a significant improvement in the performance of carbohydrate content predictions using an optimized ANN model compared to PLSR, with > 16% reduction in mean absolute percent error (MAPE) when tested on the same set of reserved data. The optimized ANN models for FAME and protein prediction performed exceptionally well with 5.99% and 5.09% MAPE, respectively. Application of these methods to detection and quantification of minor biomass constituents that are relevant to certain product streams has shown positive preliminary results, opening the possibility for extensions to the outputs of this powerful data type. All models are accompanied by prediction uncertainties and unsupervised spectral outlier detection to alert an operator to unreliable spectral data. These tools can be deployed for rapid determination of algal culture status, and cultivation and biomass quality improvement.

A New Approach to Monitoring Solvent Extraction Processes for the Nuclear Industry

As part of an initiative to steward research, development, and innovation into the nuclear fuel cycle, Idaho National Laboratory is building the Beartooth testbed. Beartooth will include a cascade of centrifugal contactors, glove box lines, solidification, and dissolution equipment to aid in the progression of novel separation techniques and provide hands-on opportunities to early-career separation scientists. Beartooth will incorporate novel monitoring techniques using sensors and machine learning algorithms to inform a process operator of separation conditions. This research is examining monitoring technologies not typically used in nuclear separation processes such as acoustic microphones, accelerometers, infrared cameras, red-green-blue color sensors, among others. These sensors are being examined for their functionality within a separation process and their ability to detect applicable signals. Machine learning methods are being developed to determine their utility in detecting faults and alerting operators of expected and unexpected events. These methods have the potential to impact Safeguards by Design efforts and real-time decision making. This overview will detail preliminary results from acoustic, vibration, and color sensors.

High-Throughput Custom Monitoring for the Mu2e TDAQ System

In this project we are studying the application of programmable network hardware to provide a custom monitoring capability for the Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) system. The goal of the Mu2e experiment is to search for a charged-lepton flavor violating processes where a negative muon converts into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. This experiment is intended to improve by four orders of magnitude the search sensitivity reached so far. We have a working prototype of a system that provides high-throughput, custom monitoring for the Mu2e TDAQ system. The custom Mu2e network packet header format is parsed as it crosses the network switch. Parsing extracts bits that convey information about error states at read-out controllers (ROCs). This information is periodically relayed to the switch controller, which in turn alerts experiment operators.

Gaining Real-Time Water Leak Detection

Devens Reserve Forces Training Area is a United States Army Reserve (USAR) Installation that struggles with severe water leaks, often causing significant damage to the facility and requiring major renovation. Traditional water use is highly dependent on occupancy, so it can be difficult to benchmark a facility’s water use. It can be exceptionally difficult when occupancy is transient and/or varies. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) collaborated with Devens to implement real-time monitoring of their water consumption by utilizing the smart meter data from their existing 23 water meters. PNNL created a simple algorithm to calculate hourly water consumption and trigger an alert to be instantly emailed to Devens’ personnel when there appears to be a water leak in any building with a smart water meter. Here, this approach is expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary water consumption costs and damages from leaks and was implemented with little-to-no costs or service disruptions. Next steps for this project include slow leak detection through nighttime monitoring and to extrapolate this water leak approach to the remainder 360 water meters on USAR’s Enterprise Building Control System so USAR sites across the country can be instantly notified of potential water leaks.
