WFSUITE: A PYTHON SOFTWARE SUITE FOR X-RAY WAVEFRONT SENDING AND AT-WAVELENGTH METROLOGY

SF-26-025 WFSuite is a graphical and command-line toolkit for coded-mask-based X-ray wavefront sensing and phase reconstruction at synchrotron beamlines. It integrates analysis tools for both relative and absolute speckle-based measurements. In the relative metrology module, WFSuite implements Wavelet-transform-based X-ray Speckle Tracking (WXST) and Wavelet-transform-based Speckle Vector Tracking (WSVT) methods to retrieve differential phase and wavefront distortions by comparing speckle patterns recorded with and without the test sample. In the absolute phase module, WFSuite uses coded-mask speckle patterns and replaces the measured reference with a numerically simulated one, enablingsingle-shot wavefront reconstruction using either WXST or a neural-network-based method (SPINNet).

Nano-compositional imaging of the lanthanum silicide system at THz wavelengths

Terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (THz-sSNOM) provides a noninvasive way to probe the low frequency conductivity of materials and to characterize material compositions at the nanoscale. However, the potential capability of atomic compositional analysis with THz nanoscopy remains largely unexplored. Here, we perform THz near-field imaging and spectroscopy on a model rare-earth alloy of lanthanum silicide (La–Si) which is known to exhibit diverse compositional and structural phases. We identify subwavelength spatial variations in conductivity that is manifested as alloy microstructures down to much less than 1 μ m in size and is remarkably distinct from the surface topography of the material. Signal contrasts from the near-field scattering responses enable mapping the local silicon/lanthanum content differences. These observations demonstrate that THz-sSNOM offers a new avenue to investigate the compositional heterogeneity of material phases and their related nanoscale electrical as well as optical properties.

Reaction nanoscopy of ion emission from sub-wavelength propanediol droplets

Abstract Droplets provide unique opportunities for the investigation of laser-induced surface chemistry. Chemical reactions on the surface of charged droplets are ubiquitous in nature and can provide critical insight into more efficient processes for industrial chemical production. Here, we demonstrate the application of the reaction nanoscopy technique to strong-field ionized nanodroplets of propanediol (PDO). The technique’s sensitivity to the near-field around the droplet allows for the in-situ characterization of the average droplet size and charge. The use of ultrashort laser pulses enables control of the amount of surface charge by the laser intensity. Moreover, we demonstrate the surface chemical sensitivity of reaction nanoscopy by comparing droplets of the isomers 1,2-PDO and 1,3-PDO in their ion emission and fragmentation channels. Referencing the ion yields to gas-phase data, we find an enhanced production of methyl cations from droplets of the 1,2-PDO isomer. Density functional theory simulations support that this enhancement is due to the alignment of 1,2-PDO molecules on the surface. The results pave the way towards spatio-temporal observations of charge dynamics and surface reactions on droplets.

The Wavelength Shifting Plate on the LEGEND Experiment

Majorana-type neutrinos lead to a neutrinoless double beta decay with the emission of only two electrons. (Lepton Number Violation). LEGEND experiment is proposed to search for this transition from ⁷⁶Ge to ⁷⁶Se. The goal is to reach the half-life sensitivity of about 10²⁸ years in a 5 kton٠year exposure of a detector with 1 ton of isotopic ⁷⁶Ge mass.

Coherent Wavelength Switched Co-Packaged Optics to Disrupt Datacenters/HPC (AKA "QRock") (Final Report)

This project resulted in multiple first-of-a-kind demonstrations, including two generations of transmitters, a receiver, and a complete coherent link. The transmitter architecture, based on EAMs to generate QPSK modulation was first demonstrated in InP, which has limitations for scaling up to chips with multiple channels for full WDM architectures, and implementing the densities and level of integration needed to implement co-packaging with electronics. Our work resulted in the first demonstration of this architecture on a Si platform compatible with copackaging, and our working prototypes illustrated the potential of the approach. The link demonstration was also the first coherent optical link realized in a multi-micron waveguide platform. For the transmitters, integrating efficient III-V EAM devices into the large waveguide Si platform simultaneously enables significant reduction in driver power consumption while minimizing optical losses in routing and fiber coupling. On the receiver side, optical coupling and propagation losses are also minimized in the multi-micron platform, reducing required laser optical power which improves link energy efficiency. The measurement results presented in the final report demonstrate that we achieved the speed objectives for the program (112Gb/s: 56Gbaud QPSK), albeit at a higher BER than targeted. The report provides assessments of the low-powercoherent link architecture and associated components developed under the program from both technological and commercial viewpoints.
