Model aerodynamic test results for two variable cycle engine coannular exhaust systems at simulated takeoff and cruise conditions. Comprehensive data report. Volume 2: Tabulated aeroynamic data book 1

Tabulated data from wind tunnel tests conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of an advanced coannular exhaust nozzle for a future supersonic propulsion system are presented. Tests were conducted with two test configurations: (1) a short flap mechanism for fan stream control with an isentropic contoured flow splitter, and (2) an iris fan nozzle with a conical flow splitter. Both designs feature a translating primary plug and an auxiliary inlet ejector. Tests were conducted at takeoff and simulated cruise conditions. Data were acquired at Mach numbers of 0, 0.36, 0.9, and 2.0 for a wide range of nozzle operating conditions. At simulated supersonic cruise, both configurations demonstrated good performance, comparable to levels assumed in earlier advanced supersonic propulsion studies. However, at subsonic cruise, both configurations exhibited performance that was 6 to 7.5 percent less than the study assumptions. At takeoff conditions, the iris configuration performance approached the assumed levels, while the short flap design was 4 to 6 percent less. Data are provided through test run 25.

Analysis of Nonequilibrium Molecular Nitrogen Ultraviolet Radiation in Pure N2 Shockwaves

This paper presents an analysis of data previously reported from a test series in the Electric Arc Shock Tube Facility for incident shocks composed of pure Nitrogen. The present work focuses on the lowest velocity measured in the test (approximately 7 km/s) where molecular radiation is significant. Analysis of the spectral data with the NEQAIR radiative transport code obtains post-shock trends in temperature and number densities of the states of N2. The results suggest that chemical, and possibly thermal, equilibrium has not been obtained within the distance/time measured (about 5 cm/120 s). In the nonequilibrium region of the shock, differences between rotational temperatures of different species are observed, as well as differences between rotational and vibrational temperatures. Population of rotational states above the dissociation limit is observed to occur over a distance of several cm. Finally, these data suggest that predissociation strongly affects the C^3 Π_u state of N2, leading to a lower measured radiation than predicted. An effective average pre-dissociation rate is shown to produce reasonable agreement under quasi-steady state approximation.

Power, Avionics and Software - Phase 1.0:

This report describes Power, Avionics and Software (PAS) 1.0 subsystem integration testing and test results that occurred in August and September of 2013. This report covers the capabilities of each PAS assembly to meet integration test objectives for non-safety critical, non-flight, non-human-rated hardware and software development. This test report is the outcome of the first integration of the PAS subsystem and is meant to provide data for subsequent designs, development and testing of the future PAS subsystems. The two main objectives were to assess the ability of the PAS assemblies to exchange messages and to perform audio testing of both inbound and outbound channels. This report describes each test performed, defines the test, the data, and provides conclusions and recommendations.

Design and simulation of EVA tools for first servicing mission of HST

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was launched into near-earth orbit by the Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990. The payload of two cameras, two spectrographs, and a high-speed photometer is supplemented by three fine-guidance sensors that can be used for astronomy as well as for star tracking. A widely reported spherical aberration in the primary mirror causes HST to produce images of much lower quality than intended. A Space Shuttle repair mission in January 1994 installed small corrective mirrors that restored the full intended optical capability of the HST. The First Servicing Mission (FSM) involved considerable Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA). Special EVA tools for the FSM were designed and developed for this specific purpose. In an earlier report, the details of the Data Acquisition System developed to test the performance of the various EVA tools in ambient as well as simulated space environment were presented. The general schematic of the test setup is reproduced in this report for continuity. Although the data acquisition system was used extensively to test a number of fasteners, only the results of one test each carried on various fasteners and the Power Ratchet Tool are included in this report.

Evaluation of boron/aluminum tubes in compression

A brief analytical and experimental investigation was conducted to determine the compressive behavior of a limited number of boron/aluminum (B/Al) tubes. The purpose of the investigation was to gain hardware experience in a limited evaluation of the material for possible application to spacecraft truss structures. Specimen description, test procedures and results are presented as well as comparisons with theoretical predictions regarding local column stability. It is shown that the experimental results of full-scale tests are consistent with previously reported data and that the local stability of B/Al columns as determined through short column tests can best be predicted using large deflection theory.

Aerothermodynamic Testing and Boundary Layer Trip Sizing of the HIFiRE Flight 1 Vehicle

An experimental wind tunnel test was conducted in the NASA Langley Research Center s 20-Inch Mach 6 Air Tunnel in support of the Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation Program. The information in this report is focused on the Flight 1 configuration, the first in a series of flight experiments. This report documents experimental measurements made over a range of Reynolds numbers and angles of attack on several scaled ceramic heat transfer models of the Flight 1 payload. Global heat transfer was measured using phosphor thermography and the resulting images and heat transfer distributions were used to infer the state of the boundary layer on the vehicle windside and leeside surfaces. Boundary layer trips were used to force the boundary layer turbulent, and a brief study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the trips with various heights. The experimental data highlighted in this test report were used to size and place the boundary layer trip for the flight test vehicle.

Automated qualification data tool for high temperature metallic materials

This report describes a framework for storing, processing, and displaying qualification data for high temperature mechanical properties. The framework automates the process of generating design data from mechanical test results, for example for a data qualification report for the ASME Boiler \& Pressure Vessel Code. The framework has three parts: a data storage model with common formats for several types of typical mechanical property tests, a backend based on the \pycreep Python library for correlating and extrapolating the data to generate design material properties and allowable stresses, and a demonstration user interface for displaying, sorting, and filtering the data and exploring different options for modeling the design mechanical properties. The report discusses the options available for data processing, with illustrations from real test data on Alloy 617, Alloy 709, Alloy 740H, and Laser-Powder Bed Fusion 316H. The framework is complete for ASME type data analysis and will be used to store test data generated by the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies sponsored qualification programs. Future work could extend the tool to other types of material properties and/or expand the demo user interface to make it accessible across the AMMT program.

Vibration damping characteristics of graphite/epoxy composites for large space structures

Limited data on extensional and flexural damping of small specimens of graphite/epoxy and unreinforced epoxy resin were obtained. Flexural damping was measured using a forced vibration technique based on resonant flexural vibration of shaker excited double cantilever specimens. Extensional damping was measured by subjecting similar specimens to low frequency sinusoidal oscillation in a servohydraulic tensile testing machine while plotting load versus extensional strain. Damping was found to vary slowly and continuously over the frequency range 0.01 - 1000 Hz, and no drastic transitions were observed. Composite damping was found to be less than neat resin damping. Comparison of small specimen damping values with assembled column damping values seems to indicate that, for those materials, material damping is more important than joint damping. The data reported was limited not by the test apparatus, but by signal conditioning and data acquisition. It is believed that filtering of the strain gage signals and the use of digital storage with slow playback will make it possible to extend the frequency and amplitude ranges significantly.

Small-Scale Drying: FY2020 Interim Report

This report documents the interim experimental status of small-scale drying tests currently being performed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. These small-scale drying tests are to develop the technical bases for sensors, techniques, and approaches that will be used to address the challenges faced when determining moisture content from gas samples taken at the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station for the High Burnup Demonstration Project. Specifically, the purpose of these tests is to support Sandia National Laboratories gas sample methods and analyses through a series of small-scale experiments. Key focus areas include performing tests to: • Correlate sample bottle measurements to in-cask conditions • Estimate the amount of trapped and absorbed water on cask features and surfaces that can contribute to water vapor • Assess the accuracy of the hygrometer used in the measurements under similar conditions • Identify additional methods for measuring humidity in casks easily and accurately using lessons-learned from Sandia National Laboratories, including direct gravimetric and isotopic tracer techniques. To address these topics this report outlines a series of five tests and any data collected to date that were planned for FY 2020 that include 1) humidity measurement method development, 2) gas bottle sampling tests, 3) surface drying tests on cladding, 4) small-scale drying of cladding, and 5) small-scale drying of guide-tube/dashpots. This interim report documents the experimental background, design and progress of these small-scale drying tests. Further data gathered will be summarized in the FY 2021 report.
