Development of W-Ta generator

This research program was used to further develop the existing W-Ta generator and to evaluate alternative adsorbents, preferably inorganic materials, as supports for the generator. During the first half year, combinations of non-complexing eluents and a variety of adsorbents, both inorganic and organic, were evaluated. Some of these adsorbents were synthetic, such as chelate resins that could be specific for tungsten. In the second half of the year, the stress was mainly on the use of complexing eluents because of the high affinity of hydrous oxides for tantalum, on the synthesis of chelate resins and on the use novel techniques (electrolytic) to solve the tantalum-adsorption problem.

High-temperature oxidation of a rapidly solidified amorphous Ta-Ir alloy

The oxidation products formed at 500 and 700 C on an amorphous Ta-44.5 at. pct Ir alloy in an Ar-0.1 percent O2 gas mixture were characterized using SEM, XRD, EPMA, TEM, STEM, AES, and XPS. Initially, a thin (3-4 nm) layer of Ta2O5 formed at the surface of the alloy. Continued growth of the Ta2O5, which occurred very rapidly, involved diffusion of oxygen anions from the Ta2O5/gas interface to the alloy/Ta2O5 interface, where tantalum was selectively oxidized. Because the oxide grew more quickly than iridium could diffuse back into the alloy, the iridium coalesced into platelets of crystalline iridium-rich alloy that were oriented approximately parallel to the oxide/alloy interface, and which became embedded in a matrix of Ta2O5. The unoxidized core remained in the glassy state. The oxidation process and/or the dissolution of oxygen into the unoxidized alloy caused the alloy to become embrittled.

Analysis of NiAlTa precipitates in beta-NiAl + 2 at. pct Ta alloy

Results are reported from experiments performed to identify the precipitates, and their orientation in the matrix, in a beta-NiAl alloy containing 2 at. pct. Ta after undergoing creep test at 1300 K. Test specimens formed by extruding hot powders were compressed at 1300 K for about 50 hr at a strain rate averaging 6/1 million per sec. The specimens were then thinned and examined under an electron microscope and by X-ray diffractometry. An intermetallic NiAlTa compound with a hexagonal Cl4 structure appeared as second phase precipitates in the samples, exhibiting plate-like shapes and a habit plane close to (012). The prism planes of the hexagonal NiAlTa precipitates paralleled the closest packed planes in the cubic beta-NiAl matrix.

Hemispherical emissivity of V, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W from 300 to 1000 K

The hemispherical emissivities of five transition elements, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W, have been measured from 300 to 1000 K, complementing earlier higher-temperature results. These low-temperature data, which are similar, are fitted to a Drude model in which the room-temperature parameters have been obtained from optical measurements and the temperature dependence of the dc resistivity is used as input to calculate the temperature dependence of the emissivity. A frequency-dependent free-carrier relaxation rate is found to have a similar magnitude for all these elements. For temperatures larger than 1200 K the calculated emissivity is always greater than the measured value, indicating that the high-temperature interband features of transition elements are much weaker than those determined from room-temperature measurements.

Oxidation characteristics of Ti-33Al-6Nb-1.4Ta

Static oxidation kinetics of the gamma titanium-aluminide alloy Ti-33Al-6Nb-1.4Ta (wt pct) have been investigated in air from 700 to 1000 C and in oxygen from 800 to 1000 C using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidation kinetics were controlled by the presence of alumina for all oxygen exposures and in air below 800 C, while the kinetics in air above 800 C were more complex. Oxidation products were identified using X-ray diffraction techniques. Oxide scale morphology was examined by SEM and TEM of the surfaces and across sections of oxidized specimens. The oxidation products formed depended on the exposure: Al2O3 and TiO2 were identified on all specimens exposed in and air and oxygen; the nitride phases TiN and Ti2AlN were also found on specimens exposed in air.

Radar Observations of Near Earth Asteroids 6489 Golevka and 4197 (1982 TA)

Radar observations of two near-Earth asteroids were performed using a bi-static radar technique with Kashima 34-m antenna and Usuda 64-m antenna as receiving stations and Goldstone 70-m antenna as a transmitting station. The asteroid 6489 Golevka was observed on June 15, 1995 when its distance from the Earth became 0.048 AU and the radar echo from the asteroid was detected from the data observed with Kashima 34-m antenna. The success of the trans-continental bistatic radar observations became the first detection of a radar echo from a solar system object beyond Moon in Japan. The asteroid 4197 (1982 TA) was observed on October 24, 1996 when its distance to the Earth became 0.086 AU. The radar echo signal from the asteroid was detected from both of the data observed at Kashima and at Usuda. The received signal was coherently sampled and recorded at both stations. By using these data, interferometric data analysis was examined.

Oxidation of ZrB2-and HfB2-Based Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics: Effects of Ta Additions

Several compositions of ZrB2- and HfB2-based Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC) were oxidized in stagnant air at 1627 C in ten minute cycles for times up to 100 minutes. These compositions include: ZrB2 - 20v% SiC, HfB2 - 20v% SiC, ZrB2 - 20v% SiC - 20v% TaSi2, ZrB2 - 33v% SiC, HfB2 - 20v% SiC - 20v% TaSi2, and ZrB2 - 20v% SiC - 20v% TaC. The weight change due to oxidation was recorded. The ZrB2 - 20v% SiC - 20v% TaSi2 composition was also oxidized in stagnant air at 1927 C and in an arc jet atmosphere. Samples were analyzed after oxidation by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy to determine the reaction products and to observe the microstructure. The ZrB2 - 20v% SiC - 20v% TaSi2 showed the lowest oxidation rate at 1627 C, but performed poorly under the more extreme tests due to liquid phase formation. Effects of Ta-additions on the oxidation of the diboride-based UHTC are discussed.

Titan's Elusive Lakes? Properties and Context of Dark Spots in Cassini TA Radar Data

Titan's atmospheric methane abundance suggests the likelihood of a surface reservoir of methane and a surface sink for its photochemical products, which might also be predominantly liquid. Although large expanses of obvious hydrocarbon seas have not been unambiguously observed, a number of rather radar-dark spots up to approximately 30 km across are observed in the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data acquired during the Cassini TA encounter on October 26th 2004. Here we review the properties and setting of these dark spots to explore whether these may be hydrocarbon lakes.

Titan's Plasma Environment : 3D Hybrid Kinetic Modeling of the TA Flyby and Comparison with CAPS-ELS and RPWS LP Observations

In this report we discuss the global plasma environment of the TA flyby from the perspective of 3D hybrid modeling. In our model the background, pickup, and ionospheric ions are considered as particles, whereas the electrons are described as a fluid. In homogeneous photoionization, electron-impact ionization and charge exchange are included in our model. We also take into account the collisions between the ions and neutrals. Our modeling shows that mass loading of the background plasma (H(+), O(+)) by pick up ions H2(+), CH4(+) and N2(+) differs from theT9 encounter simulations when O(+) ions are not introduced into the background plasma. In our hybrid-modeling we use Chamberlain profiles for the atmospheric components. We also include a simple ionosphere model with average mass M=28 amu ions that were generated inside the ionosphere. Titan's interior is considered as a weakly conducting body. Special attention has been paid to comparing the simulated pickup ion density distribution with CAPS-ELS and with RPWS LP observations by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft along theta trajectory. Our modeling shows an asymmetry of the ion density distribution and the magnetic field, including the formation of Alfven wing-like structures.
