Static and dynamical magnetic properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin vacancies

Motivated by the potential to suppress antiferromagnetic long-range order in favor of the long-sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid state, we study the effect of spin vacancies in the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In particular, we focus on a realistic model obtained from fitting inelastic neutron scattering on α–RuCl 3 . We observe that the long-range zigzag magnetic ordered state only survives when the doping concentration is smaller than 5%. Upon further increasing the spin vacancy concentration, the ground state becomes a short-range ordered state at low temperatures. Compared with experiments, our classical solution overstabilizes the zigzag correlation in the presence of spin vacancies. Here, our theoretical results provide guidance toward interpreting inelastic neutron scattering experiments on magnetically diluted Kitaev candidate materials

Crystal-field Hamiltonian and anisotropy in KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2

We use neutron scattering and bulk property measurements to determine the single-ion crystal-field Hamiltonians of delafossites KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2 . These two systems contain planar equilateral triangular Er lattices arranged in two stacking variants: rhombohedral (for K) or hexagonal (Cs). Our analysis shows that regardless of the stacking order both compounds exhibit an easy-plane ground-state doublet with large J z =1/2 terms and the potential for significant quantum effects, making them candidates for quantum-spin-liquid or other exotic ground states.

Beyond magnons in Nd 2 ScNbO 7 : An Ising pyrochlore antiferromagnet with all-in–all-out order and random fields

We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Nd 3+ pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7 . Susceptibility and magnetization show an easy-axis moment, and heat capacity reveals a phase transition to long-range order at T N =371(2) mK with a fully recovered ΔS=Rln(2), 53% of it recovered for T>T N . Elastic neutron scattering shows a long-range all-in all-out magnetic order with low-Q diffuse elastic scattering. Inelastic neutron scattering shows a low-energy flat band, indicating a magnetic Hamiltonian similar to Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Nuclear hyperfine excitations measured by ultra-high-resolution neutron backscattering indicate a distribution of static electronic moments below T N , which may be due to B-site disorder influencing Nd crystal electric fields. Analysis of heat-capacity data shows an unexpected T-linear or T 3/2 term which is inconsistent with conventional magnon quasiparticles, but is consistent with fractionalized spinons or gapless local spin excitations. We use legacy data to show similar behavior in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Comparing local static moments also reveals a suppression of the nuclear Schottky anomaly in temperature, evidencing a fraction of Nd sites with nearly zero static moment, consistent with exchange-disorder-induced random singlet formation. Finally, taken together, these measurements suggest an unusual fluctuating magnetic ground state which mimics a spin liquid, but may not actually be one.

Inverse Faraday effect in Mott insulators

The inverse Faraday effect (IFE), where a static magnetization is induced by circularly polarized light, offers a promising route to ultrafast control of spin states. Here we study the IFE in Mott insulators using the Floquet theory. We find two distinct IFE behavior governed by the inversion symmetry. In the Mott insulators with inversion symmetry, we find that the effective magnetic field induced by the IFE couples ferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. While for the Mott insulators without inversion symmetry, the effective magnetic field due to IFE couples antiferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. We apply the theory to the spin-orbit coupled single- and multiorbital Hubbard model that is relevant for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid material and demonstrate that the magnetic interactions can be tuned by light.

Disorder-induced excitation continuum in a spin- 1 2 cobaltate on a triangular lattice

A spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits remarkable quantum many-body effects that arise from the synergy between geometric spin frustration and quantum fluctuations. It can host quantum frustrated magnetic topological phenomena such as quantum spin liquid (QSL) states, highlighted by the presence of fractionalized quasiparticles within a continuum of magnetic excitations. Here, in this work, we use neutron scattering to study CoZnMo 3 O 8 , which has a triangular lattice of J eff = 1/2 Co 2+ ions with octahedral coordination. We found a wave-vector-dependent excitation continuum at low energy that disappears with increasing temperature. Although these excitations are reminiscent of a spin excitation continuum in a QSL state, their presence in CoZnMo 3 O 8 originates from magnetic intersite disorder-induced dynamic spin states with peculiar excitations. Our results, therefore, provide direct experimental evidence for the presence of a disorder-induced spin excitation continuum.

Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 in a broad magnetic field range (0 T ≤ B ≤ 17.5 T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Quasi-one-dimensional Pb 5 Re 3 O 15 : A 5 d realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) magnetic compounds connect the exact solutions of low-dimensional magnetic geometries, which promise quantum spin liquid behavior and exotic quasiparticles, with real-world materials, in which competing magnetic interactions affect their implementation in quantum information science. Here, the structural determination and quasi-1D magnetic behavior of a previously unreported compound, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , is presented. Like the anisotropic triangular A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) materials, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 contains [ReO 5 ] square pyramids inserted into anion-centered quasi-two-dimensional layers and hosts spin-1/2 moments on the Re 6+ ions. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , however, has a more ideal quasi-1D geometry than the A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 materials, with larger interchain distances and interlayer spacing. Quasi-1D magnetic behavior in Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is confirmed by fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the Bonner-Fisher model for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled chain, yielding an intrachain coupling constant of |J|/k B =54.5K. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is highly insulating at room temperature, and heat capacity data below 10 K reveal a linear-T contribution that suggests the presence of low-temperature spinon excitations. Finally, with a lack of three-dimensional ordering down to at least 0.6 K, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is proposed as a model system for studying the quantum magnetism of quasi-1D Heisenberg chains in a real-world 5d 1 antiferromagnetic material.

Fractionalized excitations probed by ultrasound

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in 𝛼−RuCl 3 —a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and ℤ 2 -flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the magnetically ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with the presence of thermally excited ℤ 2 visons. Here, we demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in 𝛼−RuCl 3 and provide new insights into the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material.

Field-induced intermediate ordered phase and anisotropic interlayer interactions in α-RuCl 3

In α-RuCl 3 , an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. In this work, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. Neutron-diffraction results show that the magnetic structure in this phase is characterized by a six-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Theoretically, the intermediate ordered phase can be accounted for by including spin-anisotropic couplings between the layers in a three-dimensional spin model. Together, this demonstrates the importance of interlayer exchange interactions in α-RuCl 3 .

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Structural Distortions and Short‐Range Magnetism in a Honeycomb Iridate Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6

Layered honeycomb iridates receive significant attention in the materials chemistry and physics fields due to the relevance of their crystal structures to the Kitaev model of a quantum spin liquid (QSL). In quest of liquid‐like magnetic ground state signatures, first‐generation alkali metal iridates A 2 IrO 3 ≡ A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 (A = Li, Na) and second‐generation iridates T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 ( T = Cu, Ag, H) are developed. T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 is synthesized from A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 via metathesis reactions replacing alkali ions located between honeycomb layers. Herein, the next level of chemical and structural complexity is introduced by synthesizing the honeycomb iridate, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 , in which alkali ions between and within the honeycomb layers are both selectively exchanged with two different transition metals. Analysis of powder X‐Ray diffraction data reveals corrugation of the honeycomb layers in Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 that hinders complete magnetic frustration and results in a spin glass behavior observed from magnetization and specific heat data. Thus, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 represents yet another model, which broadens understanding of intricate relationships between intralayer distortions and magnetism of prospective Kitaev QSL compounds.

How quantum phases on cylinders approach the two-dimensional limit

We consider the properties of $T$ = $0$ quantum phases of matter - especially superconducting and analogous spin-liquid phases - on infinite cylinders of width $L$ ⊥ and analyze the ways in which the $L$ ⊥ → ∞ (two-dimensional, 2d) limit is approached. This problem is interesting in its own right but is particularly important in the context of extrapolating accessible density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results on model strongly interacting problems to the desired 2d limit. In conclusion, various methods for drawing firm conclusions about the quantum phases in 2d from relatively small $L$ ⊥ results are illustrated.

Angular‐Momentum Transfer Mediated by a Vibronic‐Bound‐State

Abstract The notion that phonons can carry pseudo‐angular momentum has many major consequences, including topologically protected phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to an orbital state split by its crystal field environment, a so‐called vibronic bound state forms. Here, a vibronic bound state is observed in NaYbSe 2 , a quantum spin liquid candidate. In addition, field and polarization dependent Raman microscopy is used to probe an angular momentum transfer of Δ J z = ±ℏ between phonons and the crystalline electric field mediated by the vibronic bound stat. This angular momentum transfer between electronic and lattice subsystems provides new pathways for selective optical addressability of phononic angular momentum via electronic ancillary states.

Kondo enabled transmutation between spinons and superconducting vortices: Origin of magnetic memory in 4 H b − TaS 2

Recent experiments [Persky , ] demonstrate a magnetic memory effect in 4 H b − TaS 2 above its superconducting transition temperature, where Abriokosov vortices are spontaneously generated by lowering the temperature at zero magnetic field after field training the normal state. Motivated by the experiment, we propose the chiral quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized in the constituent layers of 4 H b − TaS 2 as a mechanism. We model 4 H b − TaS 2 as coupled layers of the chiral QSL and the superconductor. Through the Kondo coupling between the localized moments and conduction electrons, there is mutual transmutation between spinons and vortices during the thermal-cycling process, which yields the magnetic memory effect observed in experiments. We also propose a mechanism to stabilize chiral and nematic superconductivity in 4 H b − TaS 2 through the Kondo coupling of conduction electrons to the chiral QSL. Our picture suggests 4 H b − TaS 2 as an exciting platform to explore the interplay between QSL and superconductivity through the Kondo effect. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KYbSe 2

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter characterized by fractionalized quasiparticle excitations, quantum entanglement, and a lack of long-range magnetic order. However, QSLs have evaded definitive experimental observation. Several Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnets with effective 𝑆 = $\frac{1}{2}$ have been suggested to stabilize the QSL state as the ground state. Here, in this work, we build a comprehensive magnetic temperature phase diagram of a high-quality single crystalline KYbSe 2 via heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect down to 30 mK with magnetic field applied along the 𝑎 axis. At zero magnetic field, we observe the magnetic long-range order at 𝑇 N =0.29 K entering 120 degrees ordered state in heat capacity, consistent with neutron scattering studies. Analysis of the low-temperature (𝑇) specific heat (𝐶) at zero magnetic field indicates linear 𝑇 dependence of 𝐶/𝑇 and a broad hump of 𝐶/𝑇 in the proximate QSL region above 𝑇 N . By applying magnetic field, we observe the up-up-down phase with 1/3 magnetization plateau and oblique phases, in addition to two new phases. These observations strongly indicate that while KYbSe 2 closely exhibits characteristics resembling an ideal triangular lattice, deviations may exist, such as the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, calling for careful consideration for spin Hamiltonian modeling. Further investigations into tuning parameters, such as chemical pressure, could potentially induce an intriguing QSL phase in the material.

Review of honeycomb-based Kitaev materials with zigzag magnetic ordering

The search for a Kitaev quantum spin liquid in crystalline magnetic materials has fueled intense interest in the two-dimensional honeycomb systems. Many promising candidate Kitaev systems are characterized by a long-range-ordered magnetic structure with an antiferromagnetic zigzag-type order, where the static moments form alternating ferromagnetic chains. Recent experiments on high-quality single crystals uncovered the existence of intriguing multi-k magnetic structures, which evolved from zigzag structures. Those discoveries have sparked new theoretical developments and amplified interest in these materials. We present an overview of the honeycomb materials known to display this type of magnetic structure and provide detailed crystallographic information for the possible single- and multi-k variants.

Unconventional magnetic oscillations in a kagome Mott insulator

In metals, electrons in a magnetic field undergo cyclotron motion, leading to oscillations in physical properties called quantum oscillations. This phenomenon has never been seen in a robust insulator because there are no mobile electrons. We report an exception to this rule. We study a Mott insulator on a kagome lattice which does not order magnetically down to milli-Kelvin temperatures despite antiferromagnetic interactions. We observe a plateau at magnetization equal to $\frac{1}{9}$ Bohr magneton per magnetic ion, accompanied by oscillations in the magnetic torque, reminiscent of quantum oscillations in metals. The temperature dependence obeys Fermi distribution. These phenomena are consistent with a quantum spin liquid state whose excitations are fermionic spinons with a Dirac-like spectrum coupled to an emergent gauge field.

Magnetoelastic coupling anisotropy in the Kitaev material α-RuCl 3

Here we show that the Kitaev material α-RuCl 3 is among the most prominent candidates to host a quantum spin-liquid state endowed with fractionalized excitations. Recent experimental and theoretical investigations have separately revealed the importance of both the magnetoelastic coupling and the magnetic anisotropy in dependence of the applied magnetic-field direction. In this combined theoretical and experimental research, we investigate the anisotropic magnetic and magnetoelastic properties for magnetic fields applied along the main crystallographic axes as well as for fields canted out of the honeycomb plane. We found that the magnetostriction anisotropy is unusually large compared to the anisotropy of the magnetization, which is related to the strong magnetoelastic $\tilde{Γ}'$-type coupling in our ab-initio derived model. We observed large, nonsymmetric magnetic anisotropy for magnetic fields canted out of the honeycomb ab plane in opposite directions, namely, toward the +c* or -c* axes, respectively. The observed directional anisotropy is explained by considering the relative orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the coaligned RuCl 6 octahedra. Magnetostriction measurements in canted fields support this nonsymmetric magnetic anisotropy; however, these experiments are affected by magnetic torque effects. Comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental findings allow us to recognize the significant contribution of torque effects in experimental setups where α-RuCl 3 is placed in canted magnetic fields.
