Design and development of diborane shipping container

The design, development, and tests of a 200 pound container for the shipment of liquid diborane are reported. A record of the correspondence with the DOT to obtain a permit for liquid diborane shipment is presented.

Oceanographic features in the lee of the windward and leeward islands: ERTS and ship data

Analysis of the ERTS data in portions of the eastern Caribbean are presented for October 1972 showing features which are, as yet, not explained. Ground truth data obtained in that area during November 1972 are presented. These include vertical temperature structure in the mixed layer and thermocline, and surface measurements of salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll.

Removal of ice and marine growth from ship surfaces: A concept

Proposed surface is structured from sections of low-melting-point alloy. Sections are separated by network of passages for compressed air. Ice or barnacles are removed by passing electrical current through alloy and bursts of compressed air through passages.

Radar image processing of real aperture SLAR data for the detection and identification of iceberg and ship targets

An iceberg detection and identification system consisting of a moderate resolution Side Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) interfaced with a Radar Image Processor (RIP) based on a ROLM 1664 computer with a 32K core memory updatable to 64K is described. The system can be operated in high- or low-resolution sampling modes. Specifically designed algorithms are applied to digitized signal returns to provide automatic target detection and location, geometrically correct video image display and data recording. The real aperture Motorola AN/APS-94D SLAR operates in the X-band and is tunable between 9.10 and 9.40 GHz; its output power is 45 kW peak with a pulse repetition rate of 750 pulses per hour. Schematic diagrams of the system are provided, together with preliminary test data.

SARSAT: A rescue system for ships and airplanes

The SARSAT rescue system is described and alternative systems discussed, with SARSAT functioning as either independent satellite within an emergency call system or as an additional search and rescue payload of another satellite system. Geostationary and polar orbits are compared. A low cost SARSAT rescue system utilizing four satellites in a quasi solar, sun synchronized orbit at 1000 kilometers is proposed. Three multiple start satellites in a 57 degree orbit, with a fourth satellite in reserve at a lower orbit are described. Alternative transport systems are discussed and a recommended time table from project approval to launch is given.

Laser induced fluoroescence from algae: Results of a ship-borne field test

A basis is provided for the feasibility of air-borne laser fluorosensing not only of chlorophyll but also of pollutants such as oils and chemicals. There was a satisfactory correlation between the laser data and those obtained manually. The absolute determination of the chlorophyll concentration is discussed.

V/STOL tilt rotor research aircraft. Volume 2: Ship 1 instrumentation

Information covering sensor cables, sensor installation, and sensor calibration for the XV-15 aircraft number 1 is included. For each junction box (J-box) designation there is a schematic of the J-box disconnect harness instrumentation worksheets which show sensor location, and calibration data sheets for each sensor associated with that J-box. An index of measurement item codes to J-box locations is given in a table. Cross references are given.
