Theoretical branching ratios for the 5I7 to 5I7 levels of Ho(3+) in the garnets A3B2C3O12 (A = Y,La,Lu,Gd; B = Al,Lu,Sc,Ga; C = Al,Ga)

Results are reported from an experimental study investigating triply ionized holmium in 10 garnets using the point-change model to predict theoretical energy levels and temperature-dependent branching ratios for the 5I7 to 5I8 manifolds for temperatures between 50 and 400 K. Plots were made for the largest lines at 300 K. YScAG was plotted twice, once for each set of X-ray data available. Energy levels are predicted based on theoretical crystal-field parameters, and good agreement to experiment is found. It is suggested that the present set of theoretical crystal-field parameters provides good estimates of the energy levels for the other hosts on which there are no experimental optical data. X-ray and index-of-refraction data are used to evaluate the performance of 10 lasers via a quantum mechanical model to predict the position of the energy levels and the temperature-dependent branching rations of the 5I7 to 5I8 levels of holmium. The fractional population inversion required for threshold is also evaluated.

A comparison of the coupled cluster and internally contracted averaged coupled-pair functional levels of theory for the calculation of the MCH2(+) binding energies for M = Sc to Cu

The correlation contribution to the M-C binding energy for the MCH2(+) systems can exceed 100 kcal/mol. At the self-consistent field (SCF) level, these systems can be more than 50 kcal/mol above the fragment energies. In spite of the poor zeroth-order reference, the coupled cluster single and double excitation method with a perturbational estimate of triple excitations, CCSD(T), method is shown to provide an accurate description of these systems. The maximum difference between the CCSD(T) and internally contracted averaged coupled-pair functional binding energies is 1.5 kcal/mol for CrCH2(+), with the remaining systems agreeing to within 1.0 kcal/mol.

Complex Cooling Histories of Lunar Troctolite 76535 and Stillwater Orthoyroxenite SC-936

Fe-Mg site occupancy determinations of orthopyroxene from troctolite 76535 yield closure temperatures of ordering of 500-550 C and cooling rates of 1-10 C per year corresponding to shallow burial. 76535 was excavated from deep lunar crust before it had cooled to approx. 550 C. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Shape Memory Characteristics of Ti(sub 49.5)Ni(sub 25)Pd(sub 25)Sc(sub 0.5) High-Temperature Shape Memory Alloy After Severe Plastic Deformation

A Ti(49.5)Ni25Pd25Sc(0.5) high-temperature shape memory alloy is thermomechanically processed to obtain enhanced shape-memory characteristics: in particular, dimensional stability upon repeated thermal cycles under constant loads. This is accomplished using severe plastic deformation via equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) and post-processing annealing heat treatments. The results of the thermomechanical experiments reveal that the processed materials display enhanced shape memory response, exhibiting higher recoverable transformation and reduced irrecoverable strain levels upon thermal cycling compared with the unprocessed material. This improvement is attributed to the increased strength and resistance of the material against defect generation upon phase transformation as a result of the microstructural refinement due to the ECAE process, as supported by the electron microscopy observations.

UAS Integration into the NAS: Detect and Avoid Display Evaluations in Support of SC-228 MOPS Development

This presentation provides an overview of the work the Human Systems Integration (HSI) sub-project has done on detect and avoid (DAA) displays while working on the UAS Integration into the NAS project. Much of the work has been used to support the ongoing development of minimum operational performance standards (MOPS) for UAS by RTCA Special Committee 228. The design and results of three different human-in-the-loop simulations are discussed, with particular emphasis on the role of the UAS pilot in the Self Separation Timeline.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project: Detect and Avoid Display Evaluations in Support of SC-228 Minimum Operational Performance Standards Development

The primary activity for the UAS-NAS Human Systems Integration (HSI) sub-project in Phase 1 was support of RTCA Special Committee 228 Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS). We provide data on the effect of various Detect and Avoid (DAA) display features with respect to pilot performance of the remain well clear function in order to determine the minimum requirements for DAA displays.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project: ACAS-Xu Run 5 Human-In-The-Loop Sim SC-147 Results Outbrief

This presentation provides an overview of a recently completed human-in-the-loop simulation, conducted as part of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project. This study examined how to present resolution advisories (RAs) issued by Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) Xu, which can be in the vertical dimension, the horizontal dimension, or both (i.e., "blended"). The study varied the location of the ACAS Xu traffic information - it was either presented within an 'integrated' display or a 'standalone' display, where the traffic information was separated from the vehicle control interfaces and navigational information. Results revealed generally positive feedback on the visual and aural presentation of RAs, with special considerations and performance implications noted throughout.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project: Low SWaP HITL 2, SC-228 Outbrief, EO/IR & ATAR Breakout

This presentation provides an overview of a recently completed human-in-the-loop simulation, conducted as part of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project. This study explored the differential effects of four low size, weight, and power radar declaration ranges on pilot and system performance. Pilots were to avoid DAA well clear against cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft under 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 nautical mile non-cooperative detection ranges. Results revealed that pilot performance was primarily influenced by warning-level alert duration, with sufficient alerting time being most prevalent at 2.5 nautical miles and above.

Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) Overview for RTCA SC-228

The Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) sub-project started in 2021 under NASA’s Air Traffic Management – eXploration (ATM-X) project. ATM-X as a project is conducting research to support the growth of traditional aviation and new entrants. This presentation discusses the background of the PAAV project as well as it’s current areas of focus around uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) operations. The areas include the development of a flight test ecosystem, detect and avoid, traffic pattern integration, aircraft-to-aircraft communications, and contingency management. The aim of these research areas is to help inform the development of performance standards and FAA-approved procedures for integrating UAS into the national airspace system (NAS). The presentation seeks to describe the PAAV research objectives in sufficient detail to allow the committee to provide feedback on the sub-project's approach and main areas of interest.
