Vaccines based on proteins and peptides may be safer and if calculated based on many sequences, more broad-spectrum than those designed based on single strains. Physicochemical Property Consensus (PCP con ) alphavirus (AV) antigens from the B-domain of the E2 envelope protein were designed, synthesized recombinantly and shown to be immunogenic (i.e. sera after inoculation detected the antigen in dotspots and ELISA). Antibodies in sera after inoculation with B-region antigens based on individual AV species (eastern or Venezuelan equine encephalitis (EEEV con , VEEV con ), or chikungunya (CHIKV con ) bound only their cognate protein, while those designed against multiple species (Mosaik con and EVC con ) recognized all three serotype specific antigens. The VEEV con and EEEV con sera only showed antiviral activity against their related strains (in plaque reduction neutralization assays (PRNT 50/80 ). Peptides designed to surface exposed areas of the E2-A-domain of CHIKV con were added to CHIKV con inocula to provide anti-CHIKV antibodies. EVC con , based on three different alphavirus species, combined with E2-A-domain peptides from AllAV con , a PCPcon of 24 diverse AV, generated broad spectrum, antiviral antibodies against VEEV, EEEV and CHIKV, AV with less than 35% amino acid identity to each other (>65% diversity). This is a promising start to a molecularly defined vaccine against all AV. A further study with these antigens can illuminate what areas are most important for a robust immune response, resistant to mutations in rapidly evolving viruses. The validated computational methods can also be used to design broad spectrum antigens against many other pathogen families.

Here, the production and release of H 2 and O 2 during and after electron (100–1000 eV) irradiation of boehmite nanoplatelet films was studied. H 2 and O 2 produced during irradiation likely correspond to electron-induced dissociation of the hydroxyls primarily in the terminal surface layers of the boehmite followed by the H· + H· → H 2 (g) and O + O → O 2 (g) combinative desorption reactions as well as the abstraction reactions H· + >OH – → H 2 (g) + >O·̅. Postirradiation temperature-programmed desorption shows a temperature-dependent release of H 2 but no additional release of O 2 . This process likely involves diffusion and recombination of H· atoms initially trapped between the γ-AlOOH planes followed by recombination at edge and surface sites. H 2 production upon thermal-annealing-irradiated material shows no dependence on incident electron flux, suggesting the precursor species (H·) trapped within the bulk are long-lived.

This study presents a high-efficiency electrochemical process for the mineralization of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) from mildly acidic mine tailing supernatant water. Electrochemical pH control was used to promote carbonate speciation and precipitation from CO 2 -saturated solutions, achieving >1 mol CaCO 3 precipitated per mol e - at applied potentials between -1.4 and -1.6 V vs Ag/AgCl. Product morphology and polymorph selectivity were tunable via applied potential, yielding calcite and vaterite phases. Experiments using real mine tailings water confirmed selective calcite precipitation, despite the presence of sulfate and other trace elements. These results highlight a viable route for coupling CO 2 utilization with mine tailings valorization.
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as promising candidates for developing solution-processable optical gain media, with potential applications in integrated photonic circuits and lasers. However, the deployment of NCs in these technologies has been hindered by nonradiative Auger recombination of multiexciton states, which shortens the optical gain lifetime and reduces its spectral range. Here, we demonstrate that these limitations can be overcome by using giant colloidal quantum shells (g-QSs), comprising a quantum-confined CdSe shell grown over a large (~14 nm) CdS bulk core. Such bulk-nanoscale architecture minimizes exciton–exciton interactions, leading to suppressed Auger recombination and one of the broadest gain bandwidths reported for colloidal nanomaterials, spanning energies both above and, remarkably, below the bandgap. Ultrafast transient absorption and photoluminescence measurements demonstrate that the high-energy portion of optical gain arises from states containing more than 15 excitons per particle while the unusual sub-bandgap gain behaviour results from an Auger-assisted radiative recombination, a mechanism that has traditionally been viewed as a loss pathway. Altogether, these results reveal a unique gain regime associated with bulk-nanocrystal hybrid systems, which offers a promising path toward solution-processable light sources.
