Observations of cataclysmic variables with IUE

Observations are reported of the cataclysmic variables AN UMa, 2AO311-227, VV Pup, DQ Her, and GK Per. Continuum emission was detected in the short wavelength region in DQ Her. This object exhibits a quasi-blackbody spectrum at short wavelengths, such blackbody components are a common property of the variables AM Her, SS Cyg, and U Gem, suggesting an underlying similarity in the activity of these diverse systems. Flat continuum components at longer wavelengths in general are not compatible with standard disk models. The emission line ratios in AE Aqr are anomalous in that C IV is absent to a very low level relative to N V.

The optical identification of H2252-035 with a cataclysmic variable

An improved position is presented for the X-ray source H2252-033 using the Ariel V Sky Survey Instrument, and precise positioning using the Scanning Modulation Collimator on HEAO-1. The source is identified optically with a 13th magnitude emission-line object, which is probably a white dwarf binary with a well formed accretion disk, with similarities to the dwarf novae (e.g., SS Cyg) at minimum.

X-ray observations of selected cataclysmic variable stars using the Einstein Observatory

X-ray observations of 12 cataclysmic variable stars using the Einstein Observatory are reported. Nine of these stars, representing all subclasses of cataclysmic variables, were detected. Their fluxes range from 2 x 10 to the -13th to 1 x 10 to the -11th ergs/sq cm-s in the energy interval 0.16-4.5 keV. The spectra of all the sources detected are relatively hard (kT not less than 5 keV). There is no evidence for an ultrasoft emission component (kT of about 50 eV) such as has been observed from the dwarf novae SS Cyg and U Gem during optical outburst. The X-ray and optical fluxes of the objects observed can be understood in terms of differences in mass accretion rate if the accreting stars in these close binary systems possess a weak magnetic field.

Gravitational spin precession in binary systems

The precessional behavior of a binary system is modeled along the lines of one orbital angular and two spin angular non-dissipatively coupled momenta. It is found that the precessional behavior consists of a periodic nutation superimposed on an overall precession of the system about the axis of total angular momentum. A periodic nutation, superimposed on an overall precession of the system about the axis of total angular momentum, is found to characterize system behavior. It is also shown that the nutation associated with precession in such compact object-containing binaries as the PSR 1913+16 pulsar and the Martin and Rees (1979) model of SS 433 will generally be too small to be observable.

Implications of ultraheavy cosmic-ray source composition derived from observations by the HEAO-3 heavy nuclei experiment

The contribution of r-process and s-process nucleosynthesis to the Cameron (1980) solar system (SS) abundances for Z at least 33 has been derived. In the interval Z equals 34-40 HEAO-3 data extrapolated to the cosmic-ray source (CRS) fit the solar system mix better than r-process. In the interval Z between 26-40 the HEAO-3 results for CRS/SS follow the same general correlation with first ionization potential as for the lighter elements although there are deviations in detail.

Dynamic switch matrix for the TDMA satellite switching system

Future high capacity satellite communication systems require signal processing on board satellites. The on-board signal processing includes switching of RF signals between multiple antennas to provide interconnection between the uplink and downlink beams. This paper describes the development of a dynamic switch matrix for a TDMA satellite switching system to be used in the next generation communications satellites. In this paper, a dynamic switch matrix, which includes the microwave switch matrix, the distribution control unit and the timing source, will be described. Several different microwave switch matrix architectures and switching devices were evaluated and compared. A unique coupler crossbar switch matrix architecture with dual-gate field effect transistor as switching element was developed. Experimental results of both microwave switch matrix (MSM) and distribution control unit (DCU) are presented. These test results verify the MSM with coupler crossbar architecture and dual-gate FET as switching element will meet the future SS-TDMA system requirements. Finally, the reliability of the dynamic switch matrix is addressed. The analysis shows reliability of 0.9981 for 7 year space operation can be achieved for the designed dynamic switch matrix.

Implicit unsteady transonic airfoil calculations at supersonic freestreams

The computer code LTRAN2 has been extended to compute unsteady transonic flows about oscillating airfoils with supersonic freestreams. The LTRAN2 code uses an alternating direction implicit (ADI) algorithm to solve the two-dimensional, nonlinear, low-frequency, transonic small-disturbance (LF-TSD) equation. The modified code, LTRAN2-SS, includes a 'high-frequency' option. Steady solutions are checked against those computed by the steady TSD code, TSFOIL; unsteady computations of the linear LF-TSD equation are compared with known linear theory solutions; and new unsteady nonlinear solutions are presented. These cases include standard AGARD test cases for the NLR 7301, MBB-A3, and DO Al supercritical airfoils, as well as several NACA airfoils. The modified code enables aerodynamicists to quickly and efficiently compute transonic flows for both subsonic and supersonic freestreams, and thus resolve flutter boundaries through the full extent of the transonic dip phenomenon.

Sensitivity tests of two-dimensional model predictions of corridor effects

Future aerospace-vehicle systems, such as supersonic transport fleets, the Space Shuttle (SS), and the Heavy-Lift Launch Vehicle (HLLV) system will inject substantial amounts of pollutants into the stratosphere. It is, therefore, pertinent to ask whether the operation of these systems will lead to deleterious effects in the atmosphere. The current investigation is concerned with the development of criteria to assess the likelihood of a detectable corridor effect being caused by the long-term deposition of pollutants at a single latitude. The sources are assumed to operate continuously and at a uniform rate for periods of many years. It is found that transport by meridional winds and by eddy processes acts to diminish the corridor effect by advecting the pollutants out of the region of injection and by mixing them with the ambient air. Attention is given to the altitude for which a detectable corridor effect can be expected for the hypothetical launching of 400 HLLV's per year for 10 years.

Very high resolution observations of the radio source in the supernova remnant G127.1+0.5

The results of recent very long baseline interferometry of G127.11+0.54 at 10.65 GHz reveal a core dual 'jet' structure. The morphology and physical properties of the compact source are similar to those of SS 433. The combined data from various studies of this object suggest that G127.11+0.54 may be the stellar remnant of the supernova event which also produced the supernova remnant G127.1+0.5.

Planning assistance for the 30/20 GHz program, volume 2

In the baseline concept development the communications payload on Flight 1 was specified to consist of on-board trunking and emergency communications systems (ECS). On Flight 2 the communications payloads consisted of trunking and CPS on-board systems, the CPS capability replacing the Flight 1 ECS. No restriction was placed on the launch vehicle size. Constraints placed on multiple concept development effort were that launch vehicle size for Concept 1 was restricted to SUSS-D and for Concept 2 a SUSS-A. The design concept development was based on satisfying the baseline requirements set forth in the SOW for a single demonstration flight system. Key constraints on contractors were cost and launch vehicle size. Five major areas of new technology development were reviewed: (1) 30 GHz low noise receivers; (2) 20 GHz Power Amplifiers; (3) SS-TDMA switch; (4) Baseband Processor; (5) Multibeam Antennas.

Thermal Analysis of the X-band 34-meter Antenna Feedcone

A thermal analysis was done to describe feedcone shell temperature profiles and induced thermal stresses in waveguide components. IMP-SS, a steady-state version of the thermal analysis computer program employing the implicit alterating-direction numerical technique documented in a previous report, was used to analyze the two dimensional regions of the feedcone. This portion of the analysis determined the free relative displacement of the feedcone for a worst-case thermal condition.

Spacecraft in switch matrix for wide band service applicatons in 30/20 GHz communications satellite systems

Bandwidth, switching speed, off-state isolation, and reliability over a ten-year mission were factors in determining the optimum available technology for satellite communications switching in 1982. A proof of concept model for a 20 x 20 coupled crossbar switch matrix designed with FET devices for microwave switching and with high speed CMOS LIS for switch crosspoint addressing was fabricated and tested. Results show the design is feasible for application in a multichannel SS-TDMA communications system. Expandibility can readily be achieved with this design. A conceptual design study for a 100 x 100 switch matrix utilizing a coupled crossbar architecture implemented with a monolithic microwave integrated circuits revealed technology needs for high capacity switch matrices.

Gravitationally induced spurs in spiral galaxies - An example in M31

Radio and optical morphological data are consistent with a gravitational mechanism for the anomalous structure between the S4 and SS arms of M31, with the large complex of H I and H II in and around NGC 206 being implicated in the creation of the anomalous spur. Computer models of the gravitational effects of the spur show that its gravitational induction explains the observed velocity distortions. It is speculated that spurs in more distant galaxies, for which high resolution data as complete as that presented are not yet available, are also gravitational. This implicitly applies not only to spurs in galaxies with well defined spiral structure, but also for galaxies with more chaotic spiral arm patterns.
