RTDP: Streaming Readout Real-Time Development and Testing Platform

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) has created and is currently working on various tools to facilitate streaming readout (SRO) for upcoming experiments. These include reconstruction frameworks with support for Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, distributed High Throughput Computing (HTC), and heterogeneous computing which all contribute significantly to swift data processing and analysis. Designing SRO systems that combine such components for new experiments would benefit from a platform that would combine both simulation and execution components for simulation, testing, and validation before large investments are made. The Real-Time Development Platform (RTDP) is being developed as part of an LDRD funded project at JLab. RTDP aims to establish a seamless connection between algorithms, facilitating the seamless processing of data from SRO to analysis, as well as enabling the execution of these algorithms in various configurations on compute and data centers. Individual software components simulating specific hardware can be replaced with actual hardware when it is available.

Beam test results for the Endcap Timing ReadOut Chip (ETROC2) for the CMS ETL upgrade

The Endcap Timing ReadOut Chip (ETROC) for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Minimum ionizing particle Timing Detector (MTD) is designed to process Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) signals with a time resolution of 40-50ps per hit, with 30-35 ps per charged particle using two layer detector. The ETROC2, is the first full size (16x16 pixels) and full functionally design that has been tested in hadron and electron beams at CERN and DESY (Sep 2023 - June 2024). Precision timing studies at these test beams are done using a self-referential beam telescope composed of up to 4 layers/chips. This talk describes the ETROC2 beam telescope and summarizes the performance of the ETROC2 chips bump-bonded to (16x16) Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) LGAD sensors using results from recent test beams. The experiences and lessons learned during the course of these test beams are also detailed in this talk.

Compact cartridge drives coded tape at constant readout speed

To facilitate storage and repetitive reading of short-program coded tape, a cartridge case, containing mechanical drive and readout assemblies, has been fabricated. The drive transports the tape past a conventional pickup device during the reading function.

Numerical data frame readout system used in testing telemetry systems

Digital telemetry systems are treated by a display system that offers direct readout as high data rates. The rates appear in numerical format and are adaptable to photographic recording techniques. The system can show bit dropouts at a memory output or locate a malfunction in a system.

Amplitude and frequency readout overlay

Amplitude and frequency readout overlay simplifies the interpretation of oscillograph traces for full scale deflections of one inch. The overlay increases accuracy in data interpretation and saves time in analyzing oscillograph records.

Flow angle sensor and readout system

Sensor determines fluid flow angles by means of a simple vane that positions itself in the direction of the flow. The vane rotates a small light-reflecting disc as it moves while the readout system uses two cyclically polarized light beams.

Very high speed direct-readout, control and recording system

Characteristics of electronic system for high speed readout, control, and recording of data are discussed. Operation of system is described to show rate of data processing and accuracy obtainable. Primary advantage of system is providing direct recording of parameter value several times per second.

Evaluation of some wide dynamic range readout systems for photoelectric integrating spectrometers

Five types of electronic circuits commonly used for readout of currents from photomultiplier tubes were evaluated. This evaluation was conducted to define the experimental limits of achieving the widest possible dynamic range of light detection and concentration measurements in spectrochemical analysis. The circuits evaluated included the photon-counting technique and four dc circuits. These circuits displayed a dynamic range from 3 to about 4.5 decades within a repeatability criterion of 1 percent, or better. The maximum dynamic range allowed by the photomultiplier tube in this application was estimated to be about 6 decades.

Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study. Report 5: System design and specifications. Volume 7: Specification for EOS low cost readout station

The functional, performance, and design requirements for the Low Cost Readout Station (LCRS) which supports the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) data system are described. The basic LCRS consists of all hardware and software needed to acquire and track the EOS-A or EOS-B satellite and receive, record, process, and annotate the instrument data from the satellites. The LCRS also provides appropriate interfaces with the unique local user provided display and extractive processing equipment. The LCRS has the capability of acquiring image data from the EOS-A and the EOS-B satellites over a ground area defines by a 500 kilometer radius from the coordinates of the station. The LCRS is also capable of receiving and processing both, but not simultaneously, full five band Multispectral Scanner (MSS) image data and various modes of the Compacted Thematic (CTM) data.
