Coordination and establishment of centralized facilities and services for the University of Alaska ERTS survey of the Alaskan environment

The author has identified the following significant results. Specifications have been prepared for the engineering design and construction of a digital color display unit which will be used for automatic processing of ERTS data. The color display unit is a disk refresh memory with computer interfaced input and a color cathode ray tube output display. The system features both analog and digital post disk data manipulation and a versatile color coding device suitable for displaying not only images, but also computer generated graphics such as diagrams, maps, and overlays. Input is from IBM compatible 9 track, 800 BPI tapes, as generated by an IBM 360 computer. ERTS digital tapes are read into the 360, where various analyses such as maximum likelihood classification are performed and the results are written on a magnetic tape which is the input to the color display unit. The greatest versatility in the data manipulation area is provided by the minicomputer built into the color display unit, which is off-line from the main 360 computer. The minicomputer is able to read any line from the refresh disk and place it in its 4K-16 bit memory. Considerable flexibility is available for post-processing enhancement of images by the investigator.

Resistive Switching Memory Performance of Two-Dimensional Polyimide Covalent Organic Framework Films

Two-dimensional polyimide covalent organic framework (2D PI-NT COF) films were constructed on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates to fabricate two-terminal sandwiched resistive memory devices. The 2D PI-NT COF films condensated from the reaction between 4,4',4"-triaminotriphenylamine and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride under solvothermal conditions demonstrated high crystallinity, good orientation preference, tunable thickness, and low surface roughness. The well-aligned electron-donor (triphenylamine unit) and -acceptor (naphthalene diimide unit) arrays rendered the 2D PI-NT COF films a promising candidate for electronic applications. The memory devices based on 2D PI-NT COF films exhibited a typical write-once-read-many-time resistive switching behavior under an operating voltage of +2.30 V on the positive scan and -2.64 V on the negative scan. A high ON/OFF current ratio (>10 6 for the positive scan and 10 4 -10 6 for the negative scan) and long-term retention time indicated the high fidelity, low error, and high stability of the resistive memory devices. The memory behavior was attributed to an electric field-induced intramolecular charge transfer in an ordered donor-acceptor system, which provided the effective charge-transfer channels for injected charge carriers. Furthermore, this work represents the first example that explores the resistive memory properties of 2D PI-COF films, shedding light on the potential application of 2D COFs as information storage media.

Applications of Strain-Coupled Magnetoelectric Composites

This article deals with research, development and future directions of magnetoelectric composites for practical devices applications. In the past 20 years there has been a surge of research in the area of multiferroics (MF) and magnetoelectrics (ME) due to their potential to replace existing technologies based only on ferroelectric or ferromagnetic materials. Some of the magnetoelectric composites show exceptionally high potential in the area of magnetic field sensors, however, work remains before commercialization can be realized. The cross coupling among various ferroic parameters in magnetoelectric composites is several orders higher than single phase magetoelectrics, which make its favorable for low detection (nT or pT) magnetic field sensors. Advances in both layered structures or controlled three-dimensional matrix composites for applications as magnetoelectric nonvolatile memory elements are both required. Robust cross-coupling among various parameters with more than four logic states and its compatibility with complementary-symmetry metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology are the main requirements for heterostructure magnetoelectric thin films. The major hurdles in the area of magnetoelectric nonvolatile memory elements are poor interfacial properties and weak magnetoelectric coupling for high density fast read and write processes. Another potential area is strained coupled magneto-electric composites where magnetostriction mediated dimensional change in the magnetic layer effectively modulate the change in the dimension of piezoelectric layers via piezostriction, which leads to a strong ME coupling where their coupling magnitude is sufficient for magnetic field sensors. Energy harvesters based on magnetoelectric composites are also intriguing concepts to capture various types of waste energy, in the form mechanical vibration, pressure, wind energy, hydrothermal and waste temperature.

Conditional Probability And The Sparse Distributed Memory

Report presents conditional-probability interpretation of Kanerva's sparse distributed memory (SDM). SDM is conceptual digital electronic memory in which addresses chosen sparsely in space of many dimensions and content of memory at each address positive or negative integer written (incremented or decremented) or read according to special rules. Contents of SDM constitute Monte Carlo approximation to multidimensional conditional-probability integral.

Linear encoding device

A Linear Motion Encoding device for measuring the linear motion of a moving object is disclosed in which a light source is mounted on the moving object and a position sensitive detector such as an array photodetector is mounted on a nearby stationary object. The light source emits a light beam directed towards the array photodetector such that a light spot is created on the array. An analog-to-digital converter, connected to the array photodetector is used for reading the position of the spot on the array photodetector. A microprocessor and memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spot and to compute the linear displacement of the moving object based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.

Application of holographic optical techniques to bulk memory.

Current efforts to exploit the spatial redundancy and built-in imaging of holographic optical techniques to provide high information densities without critical alignment and tight mechanical tolerances are reviewed. Read-write-erase in situ operation is possible but is presently impractical because of limitations in available recording media. As these are overcome, it should prove feasible to build holographic bulk memories with mechanically replaceable hologram plates featuring very fast (less than 2 microsec) random access to large (greater than 100 million bit) data blocks and very high throughput (greater than 500 Mbit/sec). Using volume holographic storage it may eventually be possible to realize random-access mass memories which require no mechanical motion and yet provide very high capacity.

Time-Shifted Boundary Conditions Used for Navier-Stokes Aeroelastic Solver

Under the Advanced Subsonic Technology (AST) Program, an aeroelastic analysis code (TURBO-AE) based on Navier-Stokes equations is currently under development at NASA Lewis Research Center s Machine Dynamics Branch. For a blade row, aeroelastic instability can occur in any of the possible interblade phase angles (IBPA s). Analyzing small IBPA s is very computationally expensive because a large number of blade passages must be simulated. To reduce the computational cost of these analyses, we used time shifted, or phase-lagged, boundary conditions in the TURBO-AE code. These conditions can be used to reduce the computational domain to a single blade passage by requiring the boundary conditions across the passage to be lagged depending on the IBPA being analyzed. The time-shifted boundary conditions currently implemented are based on the direct-store method. This method requires large amounts of data to be stored over a period of the oscillation cycle. On CRAY computers this is not a major problem because solid-state devices can be used for fast input and output to read and write the data onto a disk instead of storing it in core memory.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection Severity Is Linked to Superior Humoral Immunity against the Spike

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is currently causing a global pandemic. The antigen specificity of the antibody response mounted against this novel virus is not understood in detail. Here, we report that subjects with a more severe SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibit a larger antibody response against the spike and nucleocapsid protein and epitope spreading to subdominant viral antigens, such as open reading frame 8 and nonstructural proteins. Subjects with a greater antibody response mounted a larger memory B cell response against the spike, but not the nucleocapsid protein. Additionally, we revealed that antibodies against the spike are still capable of binding the D614G spike mutant and cross-react with the SARS-CoV-1 receptor binding domain. Together, this study reveals that subjects with a more severe SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibit a greater overall antibody response to the spike and nucleocapsid protein and a larger memory B cell response against the spike.

A class of designs for a sparse distributed memory

A general class of designs for a space distributed memory (SDM) is described. The author shows that Kanerva's original design and the selected-coordinate design are related, and that there is a series of possible intermediate designs between those two designs. In each such design, the set of addresses that activate a memory location is a sphere in the address space. We can also have hybrid designs, in which the memory locations may be a mixture of those found in the other designs. In some applications, the bits of the read and write addresses that will actually be used might be mostly zeros; that is, the addresses might lie on or near z hyperplane in the address space. The author describes a hyperplane design which is adapted to this situation and compares it to an adaptation of Kanerva's design. To study the performance of these designs, he computes the expected number of memory locations activated by both of two addresses.

The Simulation of Read-time Scalable Coherent Interface

Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI, IEEE/ANSI Std 1596-1992) (SCI1, SCI2) is a high performance interconnect for shared memory multiprocessor systems. In this project we investigate an SCI Real Time Protocols (RTSCI1) using Directed Flow Control Symbols. We studied the issues of efficient generation of control symbols, and created a simulation model of the protocol on a ring-based SCI system. This report presents the results of the study. The project has been implemented using SES/Workbench. The details that follow encompass aspects of both SCI and Flow Control Protocols, as well as the effect of realistic client/server processing delay. The report is organized as follows. Section 2 provides a description of the simulation model. Section 3 describes the protocol implementation details. The next three sections of the report elaborate on the workload, results and conclusions. Appended to the report is a description of the tool, SES/Workbench, used in our simulation, and internal details of our implementation of the protocol.

Azimuth correlator for real-time synthetic aperture radar image processing

An azimuth correlator architecture is defined wherein a number of serial range-line buffer memories are cascaded such that the output stages of all buffer memories together form a complete and unique range bin in the azimuthal dimension at any given time. A range bin is automatically read out of the last stages of the registers in parallel on a range line sample-by-sample basis for subsequent range migration correction and correlation. Range migration correction is performed on the range bins by effectively varying the length of a delay register at the output of each range-line buffer memory. The corrected range bin output from the delay registers is then correlated with a Doppler reference function to form an image element on a real-time basis.

Thin film memory matrix using amorphous and high resistive layers

Memory cells in a matrix are provided by a thin film of amorphous semiconductor material overlayed by a thin film of resistive material. An array of parallel conductors on one side perpendicular to an array of parallel conductors on the other side enable the amorphous semiconductor material to be switched in addressed areas to be switched from a high resistance state to a low resistance state with a predetermined level of electrical energy applied through selected conductors, and thereafter to be read out with a lower level of electrical energy. Each cell may be fabricated in the channel of an MIS field-effect transistor with a separate common gate over each section to enable the memory matrix to be selectively blanked in sections during storing or reading out of data. This allows for time sharing of addressing circuitry for storing and reading out data in a synaptic network, which may be under control of a microprocessor.

Solid-state image sensor with focal-plane digital photon-counting pixel array

A photosensitive layer such as a-Si for a UV/visible wavelength band is provided for low light level imaging with at least a separate CMOS amplifier directly connected to each PIN photodetector diode to provide a focal-plane array of NxN pixels, and preferably a separate photon-counting CMOS circuit directly connected to each CMOS amplifier, although one row of counters may be time shared for reading out the photon flux rate of each diode in the array, together with a buffer memory for storing all rows of the NxN image frame before transfer to suitable storage. All CMOS circuitry is preferably fabricated in the same silicon layer as the PIN photodetector diode for a monolithic structure, but when the wavelength band of interest requires photosensitive material different from silicon, the focal-plane array may be fabricated separately on a different semiconductor layer bump-bonded or otherwise bonded for a virtually monolithic structure with one free terminal of each diode directly connected to the input terminal of its CMOS amplifier and digital counter for integration of the photon flux rate at each photodetector of the array.

A Parallel Pipelined Renderer for the Time-Varying Volume Data

This paper presents a strategy for efficiently rendering time-varying volume data sets on a distributed-memory parallel computer. Time-varying volume data take large storage space and visualizing them requires reading large files continuously or periodically throughout the course of the visualization process. Instead of using all the processors to collectively render one volume at a time, a pipelined rendering process is formed by partitioning processors into groups to render multiple volumes concurrently. In this way, the overall rendering time may be greatly reduced because the pipelined rendering tasks are overlapped with the I/O required to load each volume into a group of processors; moreover, parallelization overhead may be reduced as a result of partitioning the processors. We modify an existing parallel volume renderer to exploit various levels of rendering parallelism and to study how the partitioning of processors may lead to optimal rendering performance. Two factors which are important to the overall execution time are re-source utilization efficiency and pipeline startup latency. The optimal partitioning configuration is the one that balances these two factors. Tests on Intel Paragon computers show that in general optimal partitionings do exist for a given rendering task and result in 40-50% saving in overall rendering time.

MIND-MAC: Multi-Level In-memory Quasi Non-Destructive MAC Operation in Compact 2T-nC FeRAM for Efficient DNN Accelerator

We present MIND-MAC, a compact 2T-nC FeRAM architecture that performs multi-level, quasi-non-destructive in-memory multiply–accumulate (MAC) for deep neural networks. By exploiting voltage-controlled partial domain switching in MFM capacitors and read-transistor amplification, the cell stores multi-bit weights and gates bit-serial inputs to produce an accumulated current on shared lines. We combine TCAD-extracted parasitics with experimentally calibrated ferroelectric models in SPICE to validate device-/circuit-level behavior, and validate multi-level sensing and QNRO with measurements on a fabricated 2T-3C test vehicle. An analytical system model maps MIND-MAC to a 6-GB main-memory in-memory compute (IMC) architecture and benchmarks VGG13 inference in 61.08 ms at 964.99 mJ. Results indicate high density, reduced rewrite overhead, and energy efficiency, positioning 2T-nC FeRAM as a promising IMC candidate for next-generation AI hardware.
