Mass ejection from the peculiar emission star R Aquarii

It is pointed out that the composite emission object R Aquarii embodies a number of characteristic properties which distinguish it from other peculiar emission stars. The visual spectrum indicates the presence of a cool Mira variable in close association with a hot unresolved ionizing source of radiation which appears to be responsible for the high excitation nebular emission observed. It has been suggested by Hubble (1943) and Baade (1944) that the distinguishing meniscus-shaped nebula was formed by a nova outburst which occurred about 600 years ago. Wallerstein and Greenstein (1980) reported the appearance of a new feature in R Aquarii which resembles a brilliant 'spike' or 'jet' protruding a distance approximately 7 arcsec from the central compact region. Attention is given to several models which have been considered to explain the emission feature.

HOST instrumentation R and D program overview

The turbine hot-section technology (HOST) Instrumentation R&D program focuses on two main classes of instrumentation: (1) those that characterizes the environment around the turbine engine components, which include gas flows measurement, gas temperatures, and heat fluxes; (2) to characterize the effect of the environment on the turbine engine components, which include strain measurements and an optical system to structural responses such as cracking, buckling, spalling, carbon buildup. The HOST Instrumentation R&D program concentrates on the critical measurements that can not be made by commercially available instruments or with instruments that are already in development. The measurements of strain and gas flow are emphasized, these measurements are extremely critical to the success of the HOST program and the HOST requirements differ from the current state of the art by a considerable margin.

The Economics of Private Sector R and D Decisionmaking in Aeronautics

Information which can be used in planning to insure commercial research and technology programs which are complementary to internally financed private sector activities are presented. The main concern is to identify the characteristics of productive projects in which firms are unlikely to invest. It is shown that: (1) if it is difficult to assess the commercial relevance of an R&D project or it it is characterized by high technical risk, or a relatively long payback period, private funding will be unlikely; and (2) if a project is large relative to the size of the firm, it is unlikely to be funded in the early stages of the R&D process. Firms tend to underinvest in projects with these characteristics.

The H-R diagram of O-type subdwarfs

A spectroscopic survey by Drilling (1983) of nonemission OB+ stars in the Case-Hamburg survey and its extension to b = + or - 30 deg for l = + or - 60 deg has turned up 12 hot, relatively bright O-type subdwarfs (V less than 13). The color temperatures of the subdwarf O stars are estimated at 60,000 to over 100,000 K. The loci or these objects are shown in the H-R diagram together with those of previously analyzed subdwarf O stars. The new hot subdwarfs occupy a previously empty region in the H-R diagram, filling the luminosity range from central stars to white dwarfs. This spread in luminosity is in agreement with their spectral appearance and indicates differences in their origin. The possible origins of these stars are briefly discussed.

Properties of r-modes in the sun

Global oscillations of the sun (r-modes) with very long periods of about 1 month are reviewed and studied. Such modes would be trapped in an acoustic cavity formed either by most of the convective envelope or by most of the radiative interior. A turning point frequency giving cavity boundaries is defined and the run of eigenvalues for angular harmonics l less than or equal to 3 are plotted for a conventional solar convection zone. The r-modes show equipartition of oscillatory energy among shells which each contain one antinode in the radial dimension. Toroidal motion is dominant to at least the 14th radial harmonic mode. Viscosity from convective turbulence is strong and would damp any mode in just a few solar rotations if it were the only significant nonadiabatic effect. 'Radial fine splitting' which lifts the degeneracy in n is very small (20 nHz or less) for all n less than or equal to 14 trapped in the envelope. But if splitting could be detected, there would be a valuable new constraint on solar convection theories.

Ultraviolet variability and mass expulsion from R Aquarii

Ultraviolet spectra in the 1200-3200 A range indicate that the extended nebular features which resemble a jet in the peculiar variable R Aquarii (M7e + pec) increased in excitation in 1985. The emission properties of the compact H II region that surrounds the unresolved binary, and those of the extended nebular jet, have been analyzed from low-resolution IUE spectra of these regions. In particular, the UV line intensities observed in the jet appear variable on a time scale of about 1.5 yr. A new accretion disk model is proposed that explains the kinematic and ionization properties of discrete components which comprise the jet emission nebulosity, the appearance of the jet in the 1980s, and morphology that uniquely characterizes the R Aquarii system at radio, optical, UV, and X-ray wavelengths.

The discovery of an infrared reflection nebula surrounding R Coronae Australis IRS 5

The infrared source R CrA IRS 5 in the R CrA dark cloud has been mapped, and it is found that it is extended at H (1.6 micron) and at K (2.2 micron). The geometry of the data suggest that this object consists of a disk and polar reflection lobe surrounding a star, similar to GSS 30 in the Ophiuchus dark cloud and to SGS 1 in the NGC 1333 dark cloud. The illuminating star has an effective temperature below 8000 K, a luminosity less than 9 solar luminosities, and lies above the main sequence. The luminosity of this star is smaller than the luminosity of any other known star which illuminates an infrared reflection nebula.

Outflows in the star-formation region near R CrA

Photographs, spectra, and velocities are presented for the Herbig-Haro objects and visible stars associated with the star-formation region near R CrA. The new data are used to discuss the gas outflows in the area. At least two flows are present; one is linked with the bright variable star R CrA, and the second with the IR source near HH 100. Special attention is given to HH 101. The velocity and spatial structures HH 101 are complex, but are consistent with condensations inside an expanding shell of material ejected from HH 100IR.

Pioneer 8 traversal of the geomagnetic tail at 1600 R(E)

The Pioneer 8 spacecraft (launched on December 13, 1967) first crossed the geomagnetic tail at a downstream distance of 500-800 R(E) as it left the earth-moon system, and during a two-week period centered on January 23, 1968, the magnetometer, plasma probe and plasma wave instrument all detected specific tail-related phenomena. In April and May of 1985, Pioneer 8 traversed the expected position of the earth's tail once again, at an average downstream distance of 1650 R(E). This report contains a summary of the 1985 Pioneer 8 measurements, and a brief discussion of the limited information available on solar wind variations and terrestrial magnetic activity indicators.

Dividing lines in the H-R diagram

The present C IV H-R diagram and the Dividing Line are shown along with the present X-ray H-R diagram updated from that of Haisch and Simon (1982). Seven hybrid stars identified in the C IV diagram are shown and discussed. Only four of these lie to the right of the dividing line. In X-rays, two hybrid stars lie to the right, but both of these coronal 'detections' are ambivalent. A new hot-loop/cool-loop dichotomy is proposed to explain the dividing line.

R-Curve Instability Calculations Of Crack Growth

Report discusses use of instability method of calculation and R-curve mathematical models to analyze growth of cracks in fracture-mechanics specimens. In case of single material and structure, such analysis sometimes simple enough to be done on pocket calculator. Where microcomputer or larger computer available, comprehensive program includes libraries of driving-force equations for various configurations and R-curve mathematical models for different materials. Author concludes instability method simple and effective and model equations studied all viable in sense at lease one of them should fit almost any applicable set of crack-growth data. Method and models constitute powerful mathematical tools for analysis of fractures.

R-parametrization and its role in classification of linear multivariable feedback systems

A classification of all the compensators that stabilize a given general plant in a linear, time-invariant multi-input, multi-output feedback system is developed. This classification, along with the associated necessary and sufficient conditions for stability of the feedback system, is achieved through the introduction of a new parameterization, referred to as R-Parameterization, which is a dual of the familiar Q-Parameterization. The classification is made to the stability conditions of the compensators and the plant by themselves; and necessary and sufficient conditions are based on the stability of Q and R themselves.

Ab initio R-matrix calculations of e+-molecule scattering

The adaptation of the molecular R-matrix method, originally developed for electron-molecule collision studies, to positron scattering is discussed. Ab initio R-matrix calculations are presented for collisions of low energy positrons with a number of diatomic systems including H2, HF and N2. Differential elastic cross sections for positron-H2 show a minimum at about 45 deg for collision energies between 0.3 and 0.5 Ryd. The calculations predict a bound state of positronHF. Calculations on inelastic processes in N2 and O2 are also discussed.

A review of the R Aquarii system

Results of IR, radio, optical, UV, and X-ray observations of the D-type symbiotic R Aquarii system, obtained since early observations by Lampland in the 1920s, are described. These data are discussed in context with models which were proposed to explain the appearance of the brilliant jet. It is proposed that R Aqr might constitute a prototype of directed mass loss or jet activity in symbiotic systems.

Observations of the flank of earth's bow shock to -110 R(E) by ISEE 3/ICE

The ISEE 3/ICE spacecraft made over 100 crossings of earth's bow shock between x(SEC) = -20 and -110 R(E) most of them further away than -60 R(E) while resetting its course for comet Giacobini-Zinner. The parameters of the crossings are tabulated and some of their magnetic, plasma wave, and spectral profiles at low magnetosonic Mach numbers are displayed. Loci of crossings are compared with the extrapolation of a model of earlier statistical success, showing that the model remains useful in the far flank.

A&R challenges for in-space operations

Automation and robotics (A&R) challenges for in-space operations are examined, with emphasis on the interaction between developing requirements, developing solutions, design concepts, and the nature of the applicability of automation in robotic technologies. Attention is first given to the use of A&R in establishing outposts on the moon and Mars. Then emphasis is placed on the requirements for the assembly of transportation systems in low earth orbit. Concepts of the Space Station which show how the assembly, processing, and checkout of systems in LEO might be accommodated are examined.
