Intercalation-type metal oxides are promising negative electrode materials for safe rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to the reduced risk of Li plating at low voltages. Nevertheless, their lower energy and power density along with cycling instability remain bottlenecks for their implementation, especially for fast-charging applications. Here, we report a nanostructured rock-salt Nb 2 O 5 electrode formed through an amorphous-to-crystalline transformation during repeated electrochemical cycling with Li + . This electrode can reversibly cycle three lithiums per Nb 2 O 5 , corresponding to a capacity of 269 mAh g –1 at 20 mA g –1 , and retains a capacity of 191 mAh g –1 at a high rate of 1 A g –1 . Further, it exhibits superb cycling stability with a capacity of 225 mAh g –1 at 200 mA g –1 for 400 cycles, and a Coulombic efficiency of 99.93%. We attribute the enhanced performance to the cubic rock-salt framework, which promotes low-energy migration paths. Our work suggests that inducing crystallization of amorphous nanomaterials through electrochemical cycling is a promising avenue for creating unconventional high-performance metal oxide electrode materials.
A new, four-chord, CO 2 /He–Ne heterodyne interferometer has been designed and built for measuring line-averaged plasma density in the HIT-SI3 and subsequent HIT-SIU sustained spheromak devices. The two-color system successfully eliminates vibration-induced errors caused by mirrors that are secured to the vacuum chamber and is able to resolve electron densities ne in the full operating range of 10 18 –10 20 m –3 in both experiments with an integrated error of 4.7 × 10 17 m –2 . Here, data are presented from high toroidal current plasma discharges, showing the time evolution of electron densities n e and j Φ /n e along multiple chords.
Biological functionality is often enabled by a fascinating variety of physical phenomena that emerge from orientational order of building blocks, a defining property of nematic liquid crystals that is also pervasive in nature. Out-of-equilibrium, “living” analogs of these technological materials are found in biological embodiments ranging from myelin sheath of neurons to extracellular matrices of bacterial biofilms and cuticles of beetles. However, physical underpinnings behind manifestations of orientational order in biological systems often remain unexplored. For example, while nematiclike birefringent domains of biofilms are found in many bacterial systems, the physics behind their formation is rarely known. Here, using cellulose-synthesizing Acetobacter xylinum bacteria, we reveal how biological activity leads to orientational ordering in fluid and gel analogs of these soft matter systems, both in water and on solid agar, with a topological defect found between the domains. Furthermore, the nutrient feeding direction plays a role like that of rubbing of confining surfaces in conventional liquid crystals, turning polydomain organization within the biofilms into a birefringent monocrystal-like order of both the extracellular matrix and the rod-like bacteria within it. We probe evolution of scalar orientational order parameters of cellulose nanofibers and bacteria associated with fluid-gel and isotropic-nematic transformations, showing how highly ordered active nematic fluids and gels evolve with time during biological-activity-driven, disorder-order transformation. In conclusion, with fluid and soft-gel nematics observed in a certain range of biological activity, this mesophase-exhibiting system is dubbed “biotropic,” analogously to thermotropic nematics that exhibit solely orientational order within a temperature range, promising technological and fundamental-science applications.

To control materials properties at the nanoscale, the well-focused electron beam of the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) can be used as a tool to engineer structure with atomic precision. For 2D magnets, especially the highly anisotropic materials AgCrP2S6 and CrSBr, we find here that the STEM serves as a powerful tool for sculpting the arrangement of atoms, with the potential to modulate local magnetic properties.

This investigation delves into the degradation mechanisms of high-density polyethylene geomembranes (PE GMXs) under a spectrum of conditions, replicating real-world scenarios within a rigorously controlled laboratory setting. The treatment protocols applied induced a notable increase in the crystallinity of the treated specimens relative to the untreated controls. Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis identified an initial long period (interlamellar distance) of 16.9 nm for the untreated polymer, which expanded by 19.5% at a strain of 16.7 percent. Conversely, the treated PE GMXs exhibited a more gradual elongation of the long period, with an increase of merely 10.6% at a strain of 23.3 percent. At an elevated temperature of 65°C, both samples exhibited pronounced strain hardening, with the treated PE GMXs demonstrating superior stability even at a strain of 150 percent. Wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments corroborated these observations, revealing that the diffraction patterns of the untreated PE remained stable up to a strain of 16.7%, whereas those of the treated PE remained distinct up to a strain of 46.1 percent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images substantiated the formation of a shish–kebab structure in the treated samples. The study concludes that the geopolymer underwent oxidation and material degradation as a result of the chemical and mechanical treatments, transitioning to a more crystalline state and concomitantly losing its initial elasticity.
