Measurements of long-range two-particle correlation over a wide pseudorapidity range in p–Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Correlations in azimuthal angle extending over a long range in pseudorapidity between particles, usually called the “ridge” phenomenon, were discovered in heavy-ion collisions, and later found in pp and p–Pb collisions. In large systems, they are thought to arise from the expansion (collective flow) of the produced particles. Extending these measurements over a wider range in pseudorapidity and final-state particle multiplicity is important to understand better the origin of these long-range correlations in small collision systems. In this Letter, measurements of the long-range correlations in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^SNN}$ = 5.02 TeV are extended to a pseudorapidity gap of Δη ~ 8 between particles using the ALICE forward multiplicity detectors. After suppressing non-flow correlations, e.g., from jet and resonance decays, the ridge structure is observed to persist up to a very large gap of Δη ~ 8 for the first time in p–Pb collisions. This shows that the collective flow-like correlations extend over an extensive pseudorapidity range also in small collision systems such as p–Pb collisions. The pseudorapidity dependence of the second-order anisotropic flow coefficient, v 2 (η), is extracted from the long-range correlations. The v 2 (η) results are presented for a wide pseudorapidity range of –3.1 < η < 4.8 in various centrality classes in p–Pb collisions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the source of anisotropic flow in small collision systems, the v 2 (η) measurements are compared with hydrodynamic and transport model calculations. The comparison suggests that the final-state interactions play a dominant role in developing the anisotropic flow in small collision systems.

Centrality dependence of J /ψ and ψ (2S) production and nuclear modification in p-Pb collisions at \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 8 . 16 TeV

The inclusive production of the J/ ψ and ψ (2S) charmonium states is studied as a function of centrality in p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 8 . 16 TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE apparatus in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals – 4 . 46 < y cms < – 2 . 96 (Pb-going direction) and 2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53 (p-going direction), down to zero transverse momentum ( p T ). The J/ ψ and ψ (2S) production cross sections are evaluated as a function of the collision centrality, estimated through the energy deposited in the zero degree calorimeter located in the Pb-going direction. The p T -differential J/ ψ production cross section is measured at backward and forward rapidity for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average \( \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}\right\rangle \) and \( \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle \) values. The nuclear effects affecting the production of both charmonium states are studied using the nuclear modification factor. In the p-going direction, a suppression of the production of both charmonium states is observed, which seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions. In the Pb-going direction, however, the centrality dependence is different for the two states: the nuclear modification factor of the J/ ψ increases from below unity in peripheral collisions to above unity in central collisions, while for the ψ (2S) it stays below or consistent with unity for all centralities with no significant centrality dependence. The results are compared with measurements in p-Pb collisions at \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 5 . 02 TeV and no significant dependence on the energy of the collision is observed. Finally, the results are compared with theoretical models implementing various nuclear matter effects.

Selective Pb 2+ removal and electrochemical regeneration of fresh and recycled FeOOH

Heavy metal pollution is a key environmental problem. Selectively extracting heavy metals could accomplish water purification and resource recycling simultaneously. Adsorption is a promising approach with a facile process, adaptability for the broad concentration of feed water, and high selectivity. However, the adsorption method faces challenges in synthesizing high-performance sorbents and regenerating adsorbents effectively. FeOOH is an environmentally friendly sorbent with low-cost production on a large scale. Nevertheless, the selectivity behavior and regeneration of FeOOH are seldom studied. Therefore, we investigated the selectivity of FeOOH in a mixed solution of Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Pb 2+ and proposed to enhance the capacity of FeOOH and regenerate it by using external charges. Without charge, the FeOOH electrode shows a Pb 2+ uptake capacity of 20 mg/g. After applying a voltage of –0.2/+0.8 V, the uptake capacity increases to a maximum of 42 mg/g and the desorption ratio is 70%–80%. In 35 cycles, FeOOH shows a superior selectivity towards Pb 2+ compared with Co 2+ and Ni 2+ , with a purity of 97% ± 3% in the extracts. The high selectivity is attributed to the lower activation energy for Pb 2+ sorption. The capacity retentions at the 5 th and the 35 th cycles are ca. 80% and ca. 50%, respectively, comparable to the chemical regeneration method. With industrially exhausted granular ferric hydroxide as the electrode material, the system exhibits a Pb 2+ uptake capacity of 37.4 mg/g with high selectivity. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of regenerating FeOOH by charge and provides a new approach for recycling and upcycling FeOOH sorbent.

Production of Λ and $K^{0}_{S}$ in jets in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =7 TeV

The production of Λ baryons and $K^{0}_{S}$ mesons (V 0 particles) was measured in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The production of these strange particles is studied separately for particles associated with hard scatterings and the underlying event to shed light on the baryon-to-meson ratio enhancement observed at intermediate transverse momentum (p T ) in high multiplicity pp and p–Pb collisions. Hard scatterings are selected on an event-by-event basis with jets reconstructed with the anti-k T algorithm using charged particles. The production of strange particles associated with jets $p^{ch}_{T,}$ jet > 10 and $p^{ch}_{T,}$ jet > 20 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions, and with jet $p^{ch}_{T,}$ jet > 10 GeV/c in pp collisions is reported as a function of p T . Its dependence on angular distance from the jet axis, R(V 0 , jet), for jets with $p^{ch}_{T,}$ jet > 10 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions is reported as well. The p T -differential production spectra of strange particles associated with jets are found to be harder compared to that in the underlying event and both differ from the inclusive measurements. In events containing a jet, the density of the V 0 particles in the underlying event is found to be larger than the density in the minimum bias events. The Λ/$K^{0}_{S}$ ratio associated with jets in p–Pb collisions is consistent with the ratio in pp collisions and follows the expectation of jets fragmenting in vacuum. On the other hand, this ratio within jets is consistently lower than the one obtained in the underlying event and it does not show the characteristic enhancement of baryons at intermediate p T often referred to as “baryon anomaly” in the inclusive measurements.

Cubic Crystal Structure Formation and Optical Properties within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Family of Semiconductors

Quaternary chalcogenide semiconductors are promising materials for energy conversion and nonlinear optical applications, with properties tunable primarily by varying the elemental composition and crystal structure. Here, we first analyze the connections among several cubic crystal structure types, as well as the orthorhombic Ag 2 PbGeS 4 -type structure, reported for select members within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compositional space. Focusing on the Ag–Pb–Si–S and Ag–Sr–Sn–S systems, we show that one structure type, with the formulas Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , is favored. We have prepared powder and single-crystal samples of Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , showing that each takes on the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group I$\bar{43}$d and is isostructural to the previously reported compound Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 . Through hybrid density functional theory calculations, these cubic compounds are demonstrated to be (quasi-)direct band gap semiconductors with high densities of states at the band maxima. Furthermore, the band-gap energies are measured by reflectance spectroscopy as 1.95(3) and 2.66(4) eV for Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , respectively. We further measure the optical properties and show the electronic band structures of three other isostructural A I –B II –M IV –X-type materials, i.e., Ag 2 Sr 3 Si 2 S 8 , Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 S 8 , and Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 , showing that the band gaps can be predictably tuned by element substitution. Detailed visual analyses of the different structures and of their relationships with other members of the Ag–B II –M IV –X compositional family provide a basis for a broader understanding of the structure formation and optoelectronic properties within the quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor family.

U redox state tracked in mineralized hydrothermal carbonate with implications for U-Pb geochronology

U-Pb carbonate geochronology can directly constrain the timing and rates of important geological processes. However, the mechanisms and controls on U incorporation, distribution, and retention in carbonate minerals remain unclear, limiting geological interpretations. Here X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µXAS) and in-situ U-Pb carbonate geochronology are combined to temporally track U distribution and redox state in a porphyry-epithermal system. In this setting, multiple generations of carbonate minerals record fluid conditions and processes which control the solubility and deposition of metals, including U. This novel approach provides the first evidence of both oxidized UO 2 2+ and reduced U 4+ species in temporally distinct generations of carbonate within a single sample. Preservation of two different U oxidation states during discrete precipitation events requires U retentivity within older domains, demonstrating that the U-Pb carbonate geochronometer is robust under hydrothermal conditions. Furthermore, crystal zones with abundant fluid/vapour inclusions linked to boiling processes coincide with relatively high levels of U and favourable U/Pb. Targeting carbonate domains with these textures may therefore increase success in U-Pb geochronology. U-Pb carbonate dating combined with µXAS can track the temporal evolution of processes critical for metal deposition in long-lived and multistage hydrothermal-magmatic ore deposit settings.

K–Co–Mo–S x chalcogel: high-capacity removal of Pb 2+ and Ag + and the underlying mechanisms

Chalcogenide-based aerogels, known as chalcogels, represent a novel class of nanoparticle-based porous amorphous materials characterized by high surface polarizability and Lewis base properties, exhibiting promising applications in clean energy and separation science. This work presents a K–Co–Mo–S x (KCMS) chalcogel as a highly efficient sorbent for heavy metal ions and details its sorption mechanisms. Its incoherent structure comprises Mo 2 V (S 2 ) 6 and Mo 3 IV S(S 6 ) 2 anion-like clusters with four- and six-coordinated Co–S polyhedra, forming a Co–Mo–S covalent network that hosts K + ions through electrostatic attraction. The interactions of KCMS with heavy metal ions, particularly Pb 2+ and Ag + , reveal that KCMS is exceptionally effective in removing these ions from ppm concentrations down to trace levels (≤5 ppb). KCMS rapidly removes Ag + (≈81.7%) and Pb 2+ (≈99.5%) within five minutes, achieving >99.9% removal within an hour, with a distribution constant K d ≥10 8 mL g -1 . KCMS exhibits an impressive removal capacity of 1378 mg g -1 for Ag + and 1146 mg g -1 for Pb 2+ , establishing it as one of the most effective materials known to date for heavy metal removal. This material is also effective for the removal of Ag + and Pb 2+ along with Hg 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ from various water sources even in the presence of highly concentrated and chemically diverse cations, anions, and organic species. Analysis of the post-interacted KCMS by synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) revealed that the sorption of Pb 2+ , Ag + , and Hg 2+ mainly occurs by the exchange of K + and Co 2+ . Despite being amorphous, this material exhibits unprecedented ion-exchange mechanisms both for the ionically and covalently bound K + and Co 2+ , respectively. In conclusion, this discovery advances our knowledge of amorphous gels and guides material synthesis principles for the highly selective and efficient removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Explosive nucleation and growth of Pb islands on Ge(111) below room temperature via collective diffusion

Nucleation is a fundamental process in nature controlling phase transitions and pattern formation. Classical nucleation is based on the gradual aggregation of diffusing atoms after a critical cluster size is reached. Contrary to these expectations, we have observed in real time the formation of perfect Pb(111) islands with more than 10 5 atoms emerging out of the compressed wetting layer within a few seconds during growth of Pb on Ge(111) below room temperature. Pb deposited on Ge(111) in a temperature range between −30 °C and 10 °C exhibited explosive nucleation of height-selected islands upon reaching a critical coverage of 1.33 ± 0.07 ML with respect to Ge(111). Island nucleation was fueled by the 2% compression of the Pb wetting layer at the critical coverage. The island areas grew linearly with time, exhibiting collective diffusion, where thousands of atoms follow correlated, non-random walk diffusion. The total growth rate was higher with increasing temperature. Density functional theory simulations of the chemical potential and binding sites of the Pb/Ge(111) system give insight into the role of the compression of the wetting layer and the strain within the growing Pb layers, which explain this nonclassical behavior of the system.

Core-excited microsecond isomer in 207 Pb

An isomeric state with T 1/2 = 1.46(10) μs and E x = 8835 keV has been established in 207 Pb. Here, this state likely arises from the occupation of neutron holes in the high-j i 13/2 and j 15/2 subshells following the excitation of the 208 Pb core. The high-spin excited level structure of 207 Pb has been extended beyond the previously known states up to E x ≈ 6 MeV. Additionally, a more precise value of the half-life of the I π = 10 + isomer in 208 Pb has been obtained. Shell-model calculations provide a good account of the structure up to the 31/2 + level in 207 Pb, while the energies of higher-spin states built from exclusively high-j nucleons are considerably underestimated.

Electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in the doped topological crystalline insulator ( Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 1 – x In x Te

Here, we present a neutron-scattering study of phonons in single crystals of ( Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 1 – x In x Te with x = 0 (metallic, but nonsuperconducting) and x = 0.2 (nonmetallic normal state, but superconducting). We map the phonon dispersions (more completely for x = 0 ) and find general consistency with theoretical calculations, except for the transverse and longitudinal optical (LO) modes at the Brillouin-zone center. At low temperature, both modes are strongly damped but sit at a finite energy ( ≈ 4 meV in both samples), shifting to higher energy at room temperature. These modes are soft due to a proximate structural instability driven by the sensitivity of Pb-Te and Sn-Te p -orbital hybridization to off-center displacements of the metal atoms. The impact of the soft optical modes on the low-energy acoustic modes is inferred from the low thermal conductivity, especially at low temperature. Given that the strongest electron-phonon coupling is predicted for the LO mode, which should be similar for both studied compositions, it is intriguing that only the In-doped crystal is superconducting. In addition, we observe elastic diffuse (Huang) scattering that is qualitatively explained by the difference in Pb-Te and Sn-Te bond lengths within the lattice of randomly distributed Pb and Sn sites. We also confirm the presence of anomalous diffuse low-energy atomic vibrations that we speculatively attribute to local fluctuations of individual Pb atoms between off-center sites.

Manipulation of electronic property of epitaxial graphene on SiC substrate by Pb intercalation

Manipulating the electronic properties of graphene has been a subject of great interest since it can aid material design to extend the applications of graphene to many different areas. Here, we systematically investigate the effect of lead (Pb) intercalation on the structural and electronic properties of epitaxial graphene on the SiC(0001) substrate. We show that the band structure of Pb-intercalated few-layer graphene can be effectively tuned through changing intercalation conditions, such as coverage, location of Pb, and the initial number of graphene layers. Lead intercalation at the interface between the buffer layer (BL) and the SiC substrate decouples the BL from the substrate and transforms the BL into a p-doped graphene layer. We also show that Pb atoms tend to donate electrons to neighboring layers, leading to an n-doping graphene layer and a small gap in the Dirac cone under a sufficiently high Pb coverage. This paper provides useful guidance for manipulating the electronic properties of graphene layers on the SiC substrate.

Anisotropic, multiband, and strong-coupling superconductivity of the Pb 0.64 ⁢Bi 0.36 alloy

This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies on the superconductivity of Pb ⁢0.64 ⁢Bi 0.36 alloy, which is a prototype of strongly coupled superconductors and exhibits one of the strongest coupling under ambient pressure among the materials studied so far. The critical temperature, the specific heat in the superconducting state, and the magnetic critical fields are experimentally determined. Deviations from the single-gap s-wave BCS-like behavior are observed. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon interactions are analyzed in relation to the metallic Pb, explaining why the Pb-Bi alloy exhibits such a large value of the electron-phonon coupling parameter λ ≃ 2. Superconductivity is studied using the isotropic Eliashberg formalism as well as the anisotropic density functional theory for superconductors. Here, we find that while Pb is a two-gap superconductor with well-defined separate superconducting gaps, in the Pb-Bi alloy an overlapped three-gap-like structure is formed with a strong anisotropy. Furthermore, the chemical disorder, inherent to this alloy, leads to strong electron scattering, which is found to reduce the critical temperature.

Detailed examination of astrophysical constraints on the symmetry energy and the neutron skin of 208 Pb with minimal modeling assumptions

We report the symmetry energy and its density dependence are pivotal for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of 0.283 ± 0.071 fm for the neutron-skin thickness of 208 Pb, $R^{^{208}Pb}_{skin}$, implying a symmetry-energy slope parameter L of 106 ± 37 MeV, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrain the symmetry energy S 0 , L, and $R^{^{208}Pb}_{skin}$ directly from observations of neutron stars with minimal modeling assumptions. The resulting astrophysical constraints from heavy pulsar masses, LIGO/Virgo, and NICER favor smaller values of the neutron skin and L, as well as negative symmetry incompressibilities. Combining astrophysical data with chiral effective field theory (χEFT) and PREX-II constraints yields S 0 = 33.0$^{+2.0}_{-1.8}$ MeV, L = 53$^{+14}_{-15}$ MeV, and $R^{^{208}Pb}_{skin}$ = 0.17 $^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$ fm. We also examine the consistency of several individual χEFT calculations with astrophysical observations and terrestrial experiments. We find that there is only mild tension between χ EFT, astrophysical data, and PREX-II's $R^{^{208}Pb}_{skin}$ measurement (p value = 12.3%) and that there is excellent agreement between χEFT, astrophysical data, and other nuclear experiments.

First measurement of Λ c + production down to p T = 0 in p p and p -Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons has been measured at midrapidity in the transverse momentum interval 0 < p T < 1 GeV/c for the first time, in pp and p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV . The measurement was performed in the decay channel $Λ_{c}^{+}$ → p$K_{S}^{0}$ by applying new decay reconstruction techniques using a Kalman-Filter vertexing algorithm and adopting a machine-learning approach for the candidate selection. The p T -integrated $Λ_{c}^{+}$ production cross sections in both collision systems were determined and used along with the measured yields in Pb–Pb collisions to compute the p T -integrated nuclear modification factors R pPb and R AA of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons, which are compared to model calculations that consider nuclear modification of the parton distribution functions. The $Λ_{c}^{+}$/D 0 baryon-to-meson yield ratio is reported for pp and p–Pb collisions. Comparisons with models that include modified hadronization processes are presented, and the implications of the results on the understanding of charm hadronization in hadronic collisions are discussed. A significant (3.7σ) modification of the mean transverse momentum of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons is seen in p –Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions, while the p T -integrated $Λ_{c}^{+}$/D 0 yield ratio was found to be consistent between the two collision systems within the uncertainties.

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Inclusive photon production at forward rapidities in pp and p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}={5.02}$ TeV

A study of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons measured in pp and p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector in the forward pseudorapidity region 2.3 < η lab < 3.9 is presented. Measurements in p–Pb collisions are reported for two beam configurations in which the directions of the proton and lead ion beam were reversed. The pseudorapidity distributions in p–Pb collisions are obtained for seven centrality classes which are defined based on different event activity estimators, i.e., the charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity as well as the energy deposited in a calorimeter at beam rapidity. The inclusive photon multiplicity distributions for both pp and p–Pb collisions are described by double negative binomial distributions. The pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons are compared to those of charged particles at midrapidity in pp collisions and for different centrality classes in p–Pb collisions. The results are compared to predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. None of the generators considered in this paper reproduces the inclusive photon multiplicity distributions in the reported multiplicity range. The pseudorapidity distributions are, however, better described by the same generators.

Multiple Slater Determinants and Strong Spin-Fluctuations as Key Ingredients of the Electronic Structure of Electron- and Hole-Doped Pb 10− x Cu x (PO 4 ) 6 O

LK-99, with chemical formula Pb 10−x Cu x (PO 4 ) 6 O, was recently reported to be a room-temperature superconductor. While this claim has met with little support in a flurry of ensuing work, a variety of calculations (mostly based on density-functional theory) have demonstrated that the system possesses some unusual characteristics in the electronic structure, in particular flat bands. We have established previously that within DFT, the system is insulating with many characteristics resembling the classic cuprates, provided the structure is not constrained to the P3(143) symmetry nominally assigned to it. Here we describe the basic electronic structure of LK-99 within self-consistent many-body perturbative approach, quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QSGW) approximation and their diagrammatic extensions. QSGW predicts that pristine LK-99 is indeed a Mott/charge transfer insulator, with a bandgap gap in excess of 3 eV, whether or not constrained to the P3(143) symmetry. When Pb 9 Cu(PO 4 ) 6 O is hole-doped, the valence bands modify only slightly, and a hole pocket appears. However, two solutions emerge: a high-moment solution with the Cu local moment aligned parallel to neighbors, and a low-moment solution with Cu aligned antiparallel to its environment. In the electron-doped case the conduction band structure changes significantly: states of mostly Pb character merge with the formerly dispersionless Cu d state, and high-spin and low spin solutions once again appear. Thus we conclude that with suitable doping, the ground state of the system is not adequately described by a band picture, and that strong correlations are likely. Irrespective of whether this system class hosts superconductivity or not, the transition of Pb 10 (PO 4 ) 6 O from being a band insulator to Pb 9 Cu(PO 4 ) 6 O, a Mott insulator, and multi-determinantal nature of doped Mott physics make this an extremely interesting case-study for strongly correlated many-body physics.
