Conservative Patch Algorithm and Mesh Sequencing for PAB3D

A mesh-sequencing algorithm and a conservative patched-grid-interface algorithm (hereafter Patch Algorithm ) have been incorporated into the PAB3D code, which is a computer program that solves the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of subsonic, transonic, or supersonic flows surrounding an aircraft or other complex aerodynamic shapes. These algorithms are efficient, flexible, and have added tremendously to the capabilities of PAB3D. The mesh-sequencing algorithm makes it possible to perform preliminary computations using only a fraction of the grid cells (provided the original cell count is divisible by an integer) along any grid coordinate axis, independently of the other axes. The patch algorithm addresses another critical need in multi-block grid situation where the cell faces of adjacent grid blocks may not coincide, leading to errors in calculating fluxes of conserved physical quantities across interfaces between the blocks. The patch algorithm, based on the Stokes integral formulation of the applicable conservation laws, effectively matches each of the interfacial cells on one side of the block interface to the corresponding fractional cell area pieces on the other side. This approach is comprehensive and unified such that all interface topology is automatically processed without user intervention. This algorithm is implemented in a preprocessing code that creates a cell-by-cell database that will maintain flux conservation at any level of full or reduced grid density as the user may choose by way of the mesh-sequencing algorithm. These two algorithms have enhanced the numerical accuracy of the code, reduced the time and effort for grid preprocessing, and provided users with the flexibility of performing computations at any desired full or reduced grid resolution to suit their specific computational requirements.

A-Train Observations of Deep Convective Storm Tops

The paper highlights simultaneous observations of tops of deep convective clouds from several space-borne instruments including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) of the Aqua satellite, Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) of the CloudSat satellite, and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) flown on the CALIPSO satellite. These satellites share very close orbits, thus together with several other satellites they are referred to as the "A-Train" constellation. Though the primary responsibility of these satellites and their instrumentation is much broader than observations of fine-scale processes atop convective storms, in this study we document how data from the A-Train can contribute to a better understanding and interpretation of various storm-top features, such as overshooting tops, cold-U/V and cold ring features with their coupled embedded warm areas, above anvil ice plumes and jumping cirrus. The relationships between MODIS multi-spectral brightness temperature difference (BTD) fields and cloud top signatures observed by the CPR and CALIOP are also examined in detail to highlight the variability in BTD signals across convective storm events.

Design and Development of a Fluid Immersion Cooled, SiC MOSFET, 37.5 kW, Bi-Directional Motor Converter

NASA's SUb-sonic Single Aft eNgine (SUSAN) aircraft is a concept aircraft whose architecture is that of a subsonic regional jet transport aircraft. SUSAN contains a single turbofan engine coupled to an electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP) system. To provide a path towards this goal, a 25% scale version of the SUSAN aircraft is being researched. A main component of the 25% power train is the Motor And Generator Intelligent Converter (MAGIC). This paper presents the design, development, and initial test results from MAGIC, a 37.5 kW, fluid immersion cooled, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET-based, bi-directional converter and controller.

An Update to the NREL Baseline Wind Turbine Controller: Preprint

The NREL 5MW wind turbine model is well established as an industry standard and is often used as a comparison model, or a model on which to build upon. Though effective, the legacy controller for the NREL 5MW wind turbine is built on a simple algorithm that is not up to date with many industry standards. Additionally, as the research community has advanced into more fast-paced development cycles, as systems engineering tools such as WISDEM \cite{WISDEM} are employed, and as a greater focus on controls co-design practices is encouraged, a demand for a generic wind turbine controller has arisen. This work presents updates for the NREL 5MW baseline controller to a more modern control architecture, and establishes a generic tuning framework that can be easily adapted to various wind turbines. Based on initial results, the updated generic controller eases the automatic tuning process, while maintaining or improving upon the performance of the legacy NREL 5MW controller.

Estimation of Large-Scale Wind Field Characteristics Using Supervisory Control and Data: Preprint

As the wind energy industry continues to pushfor increased power production and lower cost of energy, thefocus of research has expanded from individual turbines toentire wind farms. Among a host of interesting problems to besolved when considering the wind farm as a whole, we considerthe challenge of scalar field estimation, based on informationalready collected at the individual turbine level. We aim toestimate the large-scale, low-frequency characteristics of thewind field, such as the mean wind direction and the overalldecrease in wind speed across the farm, and employ a Kalmanfilter that models the wind field using a polynomial function. We compare the proposed method’s performance to both asimple averaging technique and filtering of individual turbinemeasurements. The method presented is not limited to windturbines and is applicable in other situations where multipleremote agents are used to estimate a scalar field.
