Prospects and limitations for use of frequency spectrum from 40 to 300 GHz

The existing and future use of the electromagnetic spectrum from 40 to 300 gigahertz is discussed. The activities envisioned for this segment of the electromagnetic spectrum fall generically into two basic categories: communications and remote sensing. The communications services considered for this region are focused on the existing and future frequency allocations that are required for terrestrial radio services, space to ground radio services, space to space radio services, and space to deep space radio services. The remote sensing services considered for this region are divided into two groups of activities: earth viewing and space viewing.

Satellite Power System (SPS): an Overview of Prospective Organizational Structures in the Solar Satellite Field

A literature survey, interviews with acknowledged experts in the fields of organizational entities, space, solar energy, and the SPS concept, and an analysis of these inputs to identify the organizational alternatives and make judgments as to their feasibility to serve as patterns for a future SPS entity are presented. Selection and evaluation criteria were determined to include timeliness, reliability, and adequacy to contribute meaningfully to the U.S. supply; political feasibility (both national and international) and cost-effectiveness (including environmental and other external costs). Based on these criteria, four organizational alternatives are discussed which offer reasonable promise as potential options for SPS. These included three domestic alternatives and one international alternative.

Parametric study of prospective early commercial MHD power plants (PSPEC). General Electric Company, task 1: Parametric analysis

The performance and cost of moderate technology coal-fired open cycle MHD/steam power plant designs which can be expected to require a shorter development time and have a lower development cost than previously considered mature OCMHD/steam plants were determined. Three base cases were considered: an indirectly-fired high temperature air heater (HTAH) subsystem delivering air at 2700 F, fired by a state of the art atmospheric pressure gasifier, and the HTAH subsystem was deleted and oxygen enrichment was used to obtain requisite MHD combustion temperature. Coal pile to bus bar efficiencies in ease case 1 ranged from 41.4% to 42.9%, and cost of electricity (COE) was highest of the three base cases. For base case 2 the efficiency range was 42.0% to 45.6%, and COE was lowest. For base case 3 the efficiency range was 42.9% to 44.4%, and COE was intermediate. The best parametric cases in bases cases 2 and 3 are recommended for conceptual design. Eventual choice between these approaches is dependent on further evaluation of the tradeoffs among HTAH development risk, O2 plant integration, and further refinements of comparative costs.

Space prospects

A strategy for keeping the Common Market's space effort independent of and competitive with NASA and the space shuttle is discussed. Limited financing is the chief obstacle to this. Proposals include an outer space materials processing project and further development of the Ariane rocket. A manned space program is excluded for the foreseeable future.

Prospects for advances in microwave atomic frequency standards

Traditional standards based on rubidium, cesium and hydrogen have been greatly refined over the past decade, such that the frequency stability of the current generation of devices is generally limited by those basic concepts on which they are based. Future advances in frequency stability will principally come from changes in the concepts on which the standards are based, and only secondarily from more careful engineering of the old concepts. The fundamental limitations in these standards are considered and the important conceptual and component advances which could have a major impact on future performance of these standards are indicated. A very promising new class of microwave standards based on ion storage techniques is examined.

Space science on the Space Shuttle - Plans and prospects

The paper gives an overview of current planning for the use of the Space Shuttle and Spacelab for carrying out NASA's program in Space Science. Attention is given to the major categories of use: (1) as a launch and service vehicle; (2) as an experiment platform for carrying out passive observations; (3) as a component in active and controlled experiments in space; and (4) as a manned orbiting laboratory for carrying out investigations requiring hands-on access to equipment and samples. Examples of each type of use are given. Also discussed are some of the multi-user facility instruments which are planned for early development. Finally, payloads to be carried on the early missions are discussed with particular emphasis on the capabilities of the Shuttle/Spacelab.

Radio observations of asteroids - Results and prospects

Radio observations of the asteroids can provide information on the thermal and dielectric properties of the surface materials and, because the radio emission arises somewhat below the surface, the data give some indication of layering. Observational difficulty has limited the investigations to only 6 asteroids. 1 Ceres and 324 Bamberga appear to have a layer of dust covering a more compacted material; the data on 4 Vesta cannot be matched by any current models for the surface; and the results for 18 Melpomene, 31 Euphrosyne and 433 Eros are too incomplete for firm conclusions. Future possibilities include more accurate radiometry of a few selected asteroids of different taxonomic classes and actual resolution of some of the larger objects by aperture synthesis techniques.

X-ray pulsar spectroscopy - Observational prospects

Three experimental concepts have been suggested to advance the study of X-ray pulsar spectroscopy. They are: (1) a higher bit rate for pulse phase spectroscopy; (2) an emphasis on the 10 keV 'pulsar surface' emission, and (3) an improved resolution to understand the nature of broadened iron lines in pulsars. It is shown that for conventional X-ray spectroscopy at least 5 KB/s are needed to substantially improve pulse phase spectroscopy; the broadened iron line emission in the pulsar spectra will require improved spectral resolution at 6.7 keV to discriminate among the models for this emission. It is concluded that this work will elucidate the physics of neutron star surface and circumstellar X-ray emission.

Prospects for experimental research on black holes in binary systems

Cygnus X-1, the single widely accepted example of a black hole in a binary system, is characterized by unusual X-ray properties. The X-ray spectrum of Cygnus X-1 is not cut off above 20 keV, as in most strong X-ray sources. Recent scintillation counter measurements reveal a power law spectrum extending from 40 to 200 keV with a photon spectral index of approximately 2.2. However, it is not clear that these and other X-ray properties of the system are related to the black-hole nature of Cygnus X-1. It is suggested that without a direct test to show that the mass of the compact object in other systems similar to Cygnus X-1 (Circinus X-1 and GX339-4) exceeds the limit of the neutron star mass, a better understanding of the accretion disk phenomenon must be achieved to demonstrate how the properties peculiar to these systems are related to the black hole nature of the compact object. Current accretion disk models are examined, including the alpha-accretion disk and two-temperature accretion disk models.

Prospects for a breakthrough in field-dependent 'propulsion'

If sufficient justification exists to start the development of a field physics laboratory, attention might well be given to the development of two advanced types of field-independent propulsion systems. These are gravimagnetic systems and field resonance systems. The first are multipurpose propulsion systems employing the 'gravitational' effects of coherent electromagnetic energy configurations. The second are deep-space propulsion systems which artificially generate an energy pattern that matches precisely, or resonates with, a virtual pattern associated with a distant space-time point. A new model of space-time/field interactions is used in the present paper to describe the potential characteristics of electromagnetic/gravitational field interactions and the performance capabilities of these two propulsion systems.

Parametric study of prospective early commercial OCMHD power plants /PSPEC/

The paper presents a parametric study conducted to obtain the performance, economics, natural resource requirements, and environmental impact of moderate technology MHD/steam power plants that do not require development of direct-fired high-temperature air heaters. The study was divided into three base cases, each with a reference case and parametric variations. The case using recuperative air preheat in the range of 1000 F to 1300 F, combined with O2 enrichment to 42% by volume has been selected for conceptual design.

Implications of gamma ray observations for particle acceleration Experimental prospects

The relationship of gamma ray observations to the energetic particle acceleration phenomena is discussed. In particular the requirements for production of gamma rays by energetic particles are reviewed. The present state of observations of gamma rays is also reviewed and where there is a clear connection, the implications for particle acceleration theory is pointed out. In conclusion, a brief summary is given for instrument capabilities for the next major USA satellite experiments to be conducted in the 1980s.

Future prospects for gamma-ray

Astrophysical phenomena discussed are: the very energetic and nuclear processes associated with compact objects; astrophysical nucleo-synthesis; solar particle acceleration; the chemical composition of the planets and other bodies of the solar system; the structure of our galaxy; the origin and dynamic pressure effects of the cosmic rays; the high energy particles and energetic processes in other galaxies, especially active ones; and the degree of matter antimater symmetry of the universe. The gamma ray results of GAMMA-I, the gamma ray observatory, the gamma ray burst network, solar polar, and very high energy gamma ray telescopes on the ground provide justification for more sophisticated telescopes.

Prospects for enhancing SEP array performance

Three advanced blanket design models, all employing the OAST thin cell, were developed for potential incorporation into the SEP array. The beginning of life (BOL) specific power of the these blankets ranges from 180 to 660 W/kg. Coupling these blanket designs to the baseline SEP array structure yields array specific powers of from 90 to 200 W/kg. It is shown that certain modifications to the SEP array structure, coupled with the advanced blanket designs, could allow the BOL specific power to reach approximately 250 W/kg.

Prospects for measuring phytoplankton bloom extent and patchiness using remotely sensed color images: An example

A 10 channel scanning radiometer, built as a prototype for the coastal zone color scanner on the Nimbus 7 satellite, was flown on a high altitude aircraft during a Gymnodium breve bloom along the west coast of Florida. The remotely measured ocean color imagery shows what is probably the patchy structure of a G. breve bloom extending over a 60 km by 100 km area. This conclusion is based on visual inspection of bathymetry to infer bottom reflection trends and on a single growth truth measurement of B G. breve obtained the previous day. The image shows coherent blooms which extend scales up to 60 km in length.

Prospects for TLRS baseline accuracies in the western USA

One of the main goals of the LAGEOS satellite mission is the detection of regional geotectonic movements. A parametric study with the intention to obtain the optimal baseline precision from dynamic solutions of laser ranging to LAGEOS is presented. The varied parameters are: length of reduced arc, number of tracking stations, data noise and rate, biases, refraction errors, system efficiency, gravity model errors in the value of GM. The baseline precisions are 1-10 cm depending upon the set of parameters adopted. General principles obtained are also presented.
