Vapor and Liquid ( p –ρ– T–x ) Measurements of Binary Refrigerant Blends Containing R-32, R-152a, R-227ea, R-1234yf, and R-1234ze(E)

In this article, The pressure–density–temperature–composition (p–ρ–T–x) data of binary refrigerant mixtures containing R-32 (difluoromethane), R-152a (1,1,-difluoroethane), R-227ea (1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane), R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene), and R-1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) were measured in both the vapor and liquid phases using a two-sinker, magnetic suspension densimeter. The specific samples in this study comprised two compositions of approximately (0.3/0.7) and (0.7/0.3) mole fraction for each of the following four binary refrigerant blends: R-32 + R-1234yf, R-32 + R-1234ze(E), R-1234yf + R-152a, and R-1234ze(E) + R-227ea. Single-phase vapor densities were measured over a temperature range of approximately 253 to 293 K and pressures from 0.05 to 0.98 MPa. Single-phase liquid and supercritical densities were measured over a temperature range of approximately 230 to 400 K and pressures up to 22 MPa; for refrigerant blends containing R-1234yf, the maximum pressure was limited to 14 MPa. Overall relative combined, expanded (k = 2) uncertainties in density ranged from 0.025 to 0.191%, with an average uncertainty of approximately 0.05%. Here, we present measurement results, along with comparisons to available literature data and to default equations of state and mixture models included in REFPROP.

Salt Effects on Li-Ion Exchange Kinetics of Na 2 Mg 2 P 3 O 9 N: Systematic In Situ Synchrotron Diffraction Studies

The kinetics and thermodynamics of solid-state ion exchange of Li+ into Na2Mg2P3O9N were investigated using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction methods for a series of Li-containing salts, allowing systematic trends with general applicability to ion exchange reactions to be elucidated. The collection of data for a wide range of reaction conditions was enabled through the use of a novel multiwell sample environment which leverages the ability of the synchrotron beamline to rapidly (similar to 1 s) collect high-quality data suitable for monitoring reaction progress. From these data, it was possible to resolve the influence of salt choice and salt concentration on the ion exchange reaction kinetics. Furthermore, by carrying out experiments at different temperatures, initial estimates of activation energies were obtained. It was generally found that the ion exchange reaction kinetics strongly depended on the salt chosen as the ion source rather than being primarily determined by the ion mobility of the ceramic.

Controlling Catalyst–Semiconductor Contacts: Interfacial Charge Separation in p-InP Photocathodes

Charge-carrier-selective interfaces between electrocatalyst particles and semiconductor light absorbers are critical for solar photochemistry but controlling their properties is challenging. Using thin films and nanoparticle arrays of Pt hydrogen-evolution catalysts on p-InP (a high-performance photocathode material), along with macroscopic and nanoscopic electrical and chemical analysis, we show how hydrogen alloying, the pinch-off effect for nanoscale contacts, and the formation of a native surface oxides all play different roles in creating charge-carrier-selective junctions. As a result, the new insights can be broadly applied to photocathodes, photoanodes, and overall water-splitting systems to control charge-carrier selectivity and improve performance.

Locoregional Treatment of Glioblastoma With Targeted α Therapy: [213Bi]Bi-DOTA–Substance P Versus [225Ac]Ac-DOTA–Substance P—Analysis of Influence Parameters

Background Glioblastoma (GB) is the most malignant primary brain tumor. Therefore, introduction of new treatment options is critically important. The aim of this study was to assess local treatment with α emitters [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA–substance P (SP) and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP. Methods Treatment was performed as salvage therapy in patients with recurrent primary and secondary GB. [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA-SP with injected activity 1.85 GBq per cycle was used in 20 primary (48.2 ± 11.8 years old) and in 9 secondary (38.8 ± 10.8 years old) GB patients and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP in 15 primary (45.1 ± 9.9 years old) and in 6 secondary (37.8 ± 6.4 years old) GB patients with a dose escalation scheme (10, 20, and 30 MBq). Results Local treatment with [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA-SP and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP was well tolerated with only few adverse effects. There was no statistically significant difference between [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA-SP and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP groups in survival parameters. For primary GB, survival parameters of patients treated with [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA-SP and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP were as follows(in months): progression-free survival time, 2.7 versus 2.4; OS-d (overall survival from time of diagnosis to death from any cause), 23.6 versus 21.0; OS-t (overall survival from the start of treatment to death from any cause), 7.5 versus 5.0; and OS-r (overall survival from recurrence in primary tumors to death from any cause), 10.9 versus 12.0. Survival parameters of secondary GB patients treated with [ 213 Bi]Bi-DOTA-SP and [ 225 Ac]Ac-DOTA-SP were as follows (in months): progression-free survival time, 5.8 versus 2.4; OS-d, 52.3 versus 65.0; OS-t, 16.4 versus 16.0; and OS-c (overall survival from conversion into secondary GB multiforme to death from any cause), 18.4 versus 36.0. Conclusions The similarity results of 213 Bi or 225 Ac may suggest that the local treatment of brain tumors can be greatly simplified. The experience to date shows that local radioisotope treatment of brain tumors requires further dosimetry studies, taking into account the complexity of biological processes.

New Solids in As-O-Mo, As(P)-O-Mo(W) and As(P)-O-Nb(W) Systems That Exhibit Nonlinear Optical Properties

Interactions between well-mixed fine powders of As 2 O 3 , P 2 O 5 , MoO 3 , WO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 at different stoichiometry in quartz ampoules under vacuum at ~1000 °C in the presence of metallic molybdenum (or niobium), over several weeks, led to shiny dichroic crystalline materials being formed in cooler parts of the reaction vessel. An addition of small quantities of metals-Mo or Nb-was made with the aim of partially reducing their highly oxidized Mo(VI), W(VI) or Nb(V) species to corresponding Mo(V), W(V) and Nb(IV) centers, in order to form mixed valence solids. Sublimed crystals of four new compounds were investigated using a variety of techniques, with prime emphasis on the X-ray analysis, followed by spectroscopy (diffusion reflectance, IR, Raman and EPR), second harmonic generation (SHG), thermal analysis under N 2 and air atmosphere, and single crystals electrical conductivity studies. The results evidenced the formation of new complex solids of previously unknown compositions and structures. Three out of four compounds crystallized in non-centrosymmetric space groups and represent layered 2D polymeric puckered structures that being stacked on each other form 3D lattices. All new solids exhibit strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG effect; based on YAG 1064 nm tests with detection of 532 nm photons), and a rare photosalient effect when crystals physically move in the laser beam. Single crystals’ electrical conductivity of the four new synthesized compounds was measured, and the results showed their semiconductor behavior. Values of band gaps of these new solids were determined using diffusion reflectance spectroscopy in the visible region. Aspects of new solids’ practical usefulness are discussed.

p +p - electroproduction off protons in deuterium: measurements of quasi-free cross sections and kinematic probing of final state interactions

In this study, the process of pi+pi- electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium nuclei is explored. The exploration is performed through the analysis of experimental data on electron scattering off the deuteron target, collected in Hall B at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS detector. As a main result, the set of integrated and single-differential cross sections of the reaction yvp(n) -> p'(n')pi+pi- is obtained. The cross sections are extracted in the quasi-free regime, which implies that only events not affected by final state interactions are subject to selection. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1 GeV2. Sufficient experimental statistics allows narrow binning, i.e. 25 MeV in W and 0.05 GeV2 in Q2, while maintaining an adequate statistical uncertainty. The extraction of quasi-free cross sections is accompanied by the kinematic probing of FSI between the reaction final hadrons and the spectator neutron in the aforementioned exclusive channel. In this probing the distributions of missing quantities are used in order to investigate the relative spread of events with FSI along the reaction phase space, trace the difference of FSI manifestations in different reaction topologies, reveal details on alterations of the hadron momentum in FSI, and isolate FSI contributions of various final hadrons. The performed examination is also capable of retrieving information on some underlying FSI mechanisms, among which the process of resonance formation in the intermediate state of pion-neutron interactions is particularly remarkable.

The structure of low-lying 1 - states in 90,94 Zr from (α,α'γ) and (p,p'γ) reactions

The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94 Zr nuclei was investigated via (ρ,ρ'γ) at 80 MeV and (α, α', γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94 Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90 Zr these are the first data with (ρ,ρ'γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α, α', γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ, γ') data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1 - states in 90,94 Zr. The (ρ,ρ'γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α, α', γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90 Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94 Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α, α', γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1 - states below the particle binding energy.
