Insights into Ti doping for stabilizing the Na 2/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 cathode in sodium ion battery

Iron- and manganese-based layered metal oxides, as cathodes for sodium ion batteries, have received widespread attention because of the low cost and high specific capacity. However, the Jahn-teller effect of Mn 3+ ions and the resulted unstable structure usually lead to continuously capacity decay. Herein, Titanium (Ti) has been successfully doped into Na 2/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 to suppress the Jahn-Teller distortion and improve both cycling and rate performance of sodium ion batteries. In situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction study shows that Ti-doped compound (Na 2/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 0.57 Ti 0.1 O 2 ) can maintain the single P2 phase without any phase transition during the whole charging/discharging process. Further, various electrochemical characterizations are also applied to explore the better kinetics of sodium ions transfer in the Na 2/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 0.57 Ti 0.1 O 2 . This work provides a comprehensive insight into the Ti-doping effects on the performance from both structural and electrokinetic perspectives.

Review of Multifunctional Separators: Stabilizing the Cathode and the Anode for Alkali (Li, Na, and K) Metal–Sulfur and Selenium Batteries

Alkali metal batteries based on lithium, sodium, and potassium anodes and sulfur-based cathodes are regarded as key for next-generation energy storage due to their high theoretical energy and potential cost effectiveness. However, metal–sulfur batteries remain challenged by several factors, including polysulfides’ (PSs) dissolution, sluggish sulfur redox kinetics at the cathode, and metallic dendrite growth at the anode. Functional separators and interlayers are an innovative approach to remedying these drawbacks. Here we critically review the state-of-the-art in separators/interlayers for cathode and anode protection, covering the Li–S and the emerging Na–S and K–S systems. The approaches for improving electrochemical performance may be categorized as one or a combination of the following: Immobilization of polysulfides (cathode); catalyzing sulfur redox kinetics (cathode); introduction of protective layers to serve as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) (anode); and combined improvement in electrolyte wetting and homogenization of ion flux (anode and cathode). It is demonstrated that while the advances in Li–S are relatively mature, less progress has been made with Na–S and K–S due to the more challenging redox chemistry at the cathode and increased electrochemical instability at the anode. Throughout these sections there is a complementary discussion of functional separators for emerging alkali metal systems based on metal–selenium and the metal–selenium sulfide. The focus then shifts to interlayers and artificial SEI/cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layers employed to stabilize solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) in metal–sulfur solid-state batteries (SSBs). The discussion of SSEs focuses on inorganic electrolytes based on Li- and Na-based oxides and sulfides but also touches on some hybrid systems with an inorganic matrix and a minority polymer phase. The review then moves to practical considerations for functional separators, including scaleup issues and Li–S technoeconomics. The review concludes with an outlook section, where we discuss emerging mechanics, spectroscopy, and advanced electron microscopy (e.g. cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB))-based approaches for analysis of functional separator structure–battery electrochemical performance interrelations. Finally, throughout the review we identify the outstanding open scientific and technological questions while providing recommendations for future research topics.

Understanding the Existence of a Na 2 Dimer in a High-Spin State

The recent observation of a high-spin Na 2 dimer formed on the surface of liquid helium nanodroplets raises some fundamental questions, as the ground state of Na 2 is known to have zero spin. Is it protected against spontaneous dissociation? What is its binding energy and interatomic distance? Is it stable at a higher temperature? Using calculations based on density functional theory (with and without long-range interaction) and coupled cluster methods, CCSD(T), we show that the bonding in the high-spin Na 2 dimer is governed by van der Waals interaction with binding energy (bond length) varying between −0.030 eV (5.108 Å) and −0.192 eV (4.231 Å), depending on the computational method used. Thus, the experimental method used by Kresin and coworkers can be very useful to study larger metastable high-spin clusters such as Li 4 which was predicted in 1985 to have a tetrahedral structure carrying a magnetic moment of 2 μ B , while its ground state is planar and nonmagnetic.

Effect of Composition on Mechanical Properties and Conductivity of the Dual-Ion Conductor Na 1+ x Mn x /2 Zr 2– x /2 (PO 4 ) 3 for Solid-State Batteries

Here we report the dependence of mechanical properties and ionic conductivity of the Na 1+ x Mn x /2 Zr 2– x /2 (PO 4 ) 3 (designated as NMZP) ionic conductor on its composition (with x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0). Local mechanics was studied by instrumented nanoindentation, and the properties of interest included the elastic modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness. Overall, the material becomes more compliant and soft with the increase in the Na content. The elastic modulus reduces from 120 to 80 GPa, and nanoindentation hardness reduces from 7.8 to 4.2 GPa when x changes from 0.5 to 2.0. The relationship with fracture toughness ( K C ) is highly nonlinear: fracture toughness first decreases and then increases with the increase in the sodium content, reaching a maximum value of 0.89 MPa × m 1/2 at x = 2.0. Such a relationship was found to correlate with the formation of a glassy phase in NMZP at intermediate Na concentration. The maximum ionic conductivity coincides with the maximum fracture toughness in this material.

Multifunctional Effect of Fe Substitution in Na Layered Cathode Materials for Enhanced Storage Stability

In this study, developing stable cathode materials that are resistant to storage degradation is essential for practical development and industrial processing of Na-ion batteries, as many sodium layered oxide materials are susceptible to hygroscopicity and instability when exposed to ambient air. Among the various layered compounds, Fe-substituted O 3 -type Na(Ni 1/2 Mn 1/2 ) 1-x Fe x O 2 materials have emerged as a promising option for high-performance and low-cost cathodes. While previous reports have noted the decent air-storage stability of these materials, the role and origin of Fe substitution in improving storage stability remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the air resistant effect of Fe substitution in O 3 -Na(Ni 1/2 Mn 1/2 ) 1-x Fe x O 2 cathode materials by performing systematic surface and structural characterizations. We find that the improved storage stability can be attributed to the multifunctional effect of Fe substitution, which forms a surface protective layer containing an Fe-incorporated spinel phase and decreases the thermodynamical driving force for bulk chemical sodium extraction. With these mechanisms, the Fe-containing cathodes can suppress the cascades of cathode degradation processes and better retain the electrochemical performance after air storage.

Energetics of Salt-Bearing Sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I): A Treatment Option for Pertechnetate-Enriched Nuclear Waste Streams

An alternative option for treating anion-enriched reprocessed nuclear waste streams is to immobilize technetium-99 ( 99 Tc, β = 293.7 keV, t 1/2 = 2.1 × 10 5 years) and other anions in micro- and mesoporous materials. Here we determine the thermodynamic stability of anion bearing sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I), to improve our understanding of the driving forces that control framework assembly using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy illustrate a strong dependence for vibrational features on anion size and enabled the development of a linear model that predicted the vibrational features for numerous anion bearing sodalites to within ±20 cm –1 (i.e., OH, F, Br, ClO 4 , NO 3 , and MnO 4 ). The largest negative enthalpy of formation from elements and the lack of structural water demonstrate that the perrhenate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [ReO 4 ] 2 ), a chemical analogue for pertechnetate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [TcO 4 ] 2 ), is more thermodynamically stable than all other anion bearing sodalites evaluated. The enthalpies of the reaction between nepheline and the sodium salt, which provides the guest anion species, was negative only for the ReO 4 and NO 3 bearing sodalites. Overall, we report for the first time the enthalpy of the ion exchange reactions for different anion bearing sodalites relative to the perrhenate sodalite, which is a key step in gaining the ability to tune sodalite material properties and structure during treatment and the immobilization of 99 Tc in the presence of competing anions.

Microscopic Mechanisms of Superionic Na-ion Conductivity in Crystalline and Amorphous NaMOCl 4 (M = Nb, Ta) Solid Electrolytes

Sodium-ion solid electrolytes offer a sustainable route toward next-generation batteries, but few match the performance of their lithium counterparts. Halide-based NaMOCl 4 (M = Nb, Ta) has recently emerged as a promising analogue to LiMOCl 4 , yet its structure–transport relationships remain unclear due to poor crystallinity in experiments. Here, we combine density functional theory and machine-learned molecular dynamics to reveal that crystalline NaMOCl 4 exhibits negligible room-temperature conductivity with high activation barriers arising from vacancy-mediated diffusion below an order–disorder transition. Above this transition, rotational and translational motion of the [MO 2/2 Cl 4 – ] ∞ chains create new Na sites and enhances transport. In contrast, the amorphous phase inherently supports facile, three-dimensional Na diffusion through dynamic framework flexibility. These results show that ordered crystalline phases hinder ionic transport, while disorder – either thermally induced or structural – facilitates it, revising prior assumptions from the Li system and providing design principles for high-conductivity Na halide electrolytes.

Designing electrolytes with high solubility of sulfides/disulfides for high-energy-density and low-cost K-Na/S batteries

Alkaline metal sulfur (AMS) batteries offer a promising solution for grid-level energy storage due to their low cost and long cycle life. However, the formation of solid compounds such as M 2 S 2 and M 2 S (M = Na, K) during cycling limits their performance. Here we unveil intermediate-temperature K-Na/S batteries utilizing advanced electrolytes that dissolve all polysulfides and sulfides (K 2 S x , x = 1–8), significantly enhancing reaction kinetics, specific capacity, and energy density. These batteries achieve near-theoretical capacity (1655 mAh g -1 sulfur) at 75 °C with a 1 M sulfur concentration. At a 4 M sulfur concentration, they deliver 830 mAh g -1 at 2 mA cm -2 , retaining 71% capacity after 1000 cycles. This new K-Na/S battery with specific energy of 150-250 Wh kg -1 only employs earth-abundant elements, making it attractive for long-duration energy storage.

High pressure chemical reactivity and structural study of the Na–P and Li–P systems

In this work, the Na–P and Li–P chemical systems were studied under pressure using synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell up to 20 GPa, combined with the AIRSS ab initio random structure searching technique. The results reveal an enhanced reactivity of both alkali metals with phosphorous at slightly elevated pressures. This enables the synthesis of Li 3 P and Na 3 P at room temperature (RT) starting from element precursors, bypassing the established chemical synthesis methods. Both compounds undergo a pressure-induced phase transition from the hexagonal Na 3 As-type structure (stable at ambient conditions) towards a Fm m (FCC) structure that remains stable up to 20 GPa. Attempts to synthesize compounds with higher alkali metal content (such as Li 5 P) using high-temperature and -pressure conditions (up to 2000+ K and 30 GPa), inspired by recent theoretical predictions, were not successful.

Facile synthesis and phase stability of Cu-based Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 · x H 2 O ( x = 0–2) sulfate minerals as conversion type battery electrodes

Mineral exploration forms a key approach for unveiling functional battery electrode materials. The synthetic preparation of naturally found minerals and their derivatives can aid in designing of new electrodes. Herein, saranchinaite Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 and its hydrated derivative kröhnkite Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 ·2H 2 O bisulfate minerals have been prepared using a facile spray drying route for the first time. The phase stability relation during the (de)hydration process was examined synergising in situ X-ray diffraction and thermochemical studies. Kröhnkite forms the thermodynamically stable phase as the hydration of saranchinaite to kröhnkite is highly exothermic (-51.51 ± 0.63 kJ mol -1 ). Structurally, kröhnkite offers a facile 2D pathway for Na+ ion migration resulting in 20 times higher total conductivity than saranchinaite at 60 °C. Both compounds exhibited a conversion redox mechanism for Li-ion storage with the first discharge capacity exceeding 650 mA h g -1 (at 2 mA g -1 vs. Li + /Li) upon discharge up to 0.05 V. Post-mortem analysis revealed that the presence of metallic Cu in the discharged state is responsible for high irreversibility during galvanostatic cycling. This study reaffirms the exploration of Cu-based polyanionic sulfates, which while having limited (de)insertion properties, can be harnessed for conversion-based electrode materials for batteries.

Hierarchical domain structures associated with oxygen octahedra tilting patterns in lead-free (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3

Hierarchical domain structures associated with oxygen octahedra tilting patterns were observed in lead-free (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3 ceramics using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Three types of domains are induced by distinct mechanisms: the 'orientation-domain' is induced at micrometer scale formed by different tilting orientations of the oxygen octahedra, the 'meso-chemical-domain' occurs at a few tens of nanometer scale by chemical composition variation on the A-site in the ABO 3 perovskite structure, and the 'nano-cluster-region' runs across several unit-cells with apparent A-site cation segregation with oxygen vacancies clustering around Na cations. Based on HRTEM amplitude contrast imaging (ACI), the correlation between the oxygen octahedral tilting pattern and compositional non-stoichiometry was established. The role of the hierarchical domain structure associated with the tilting patterns of the oxygen octahedra on the ferroelectric behavior of (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3 is also discussed.

Impact of structural distortions on the correlated electronic structure of orbital-selective Mott insulating Na 3 ⁢Co 2 ⁢SbO 6 under strain

Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is a promising candidate to realize the Kitaev spin liquid phase since the large Kitaev spin exchange interaction is tunable via the change in electronic structure, such as the trigonal crystal field splitting (Δ TCF ). Here, in this study, we show that the uncorrelated electronic structure of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is rather insensitive to the strain effect due to the low crystal symmetry accompanied by oxygen displacements and the presence of Sb s orbitals. Using density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory, we find that the correlated electronic structure of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is an orbital-selective Mott insulating state where the trigonal a 1g orbital is insulating due to the nearly full occupation, while other d orbitals behave as typical Mott insulators, resulting in the effective tunability of Δ TCF under the strain effect. The sign change of Δ TCF can occur as the in-plane tensile strain is applied, and the Kitaev spin liquid phase could possibly be realized due to the strongly suppressed Δ TCF under tensile strain. Our results show that the local Co-site symmetry and dynamical correlation effects will play an important role in engineering the novel magnetic phase in this and related materials.

Indirect Measurement of the 23 Na(p, γ) 24 Mg Direct Capture Reaction Rate via ( 3 He,d) Spectroscopy

The cross section of the $^{23}\text{Na}(p,γ)^{24}\text{Mg}$ reaction is dominated by direct capture at low energies relevant for stellar burning. Such cross sections can be constrained using spectroscopic factors($C^2S$) or asymptotic normalization coefficients(ANCs) from transfer reactions. In this work, the $^{23}\text{Na}(^3\text{He},d)^{24}\text{Mg}$ reaction was measured at $E_{lab}=21$ MeV to extract spectroscopic factors for $^{24}\text{Mg}$ states with excitation energies in $E_x=7 - 12$ MeV using the Enge split-pole spectrograph at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. A new non-resonant astrophysical S factor and the direct capture reaction rate for the $^{23}\text{Na}(p,γ)$ reaction are calculated and presented based on this measurement. The new rate at $T<0.04$ GK is 43$\%$ smaller than in previous studies. Rigorous treatments of uncertainties are presented using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. Finally, sources of uncertainties for computing the direct capture cross section are also discussed in detail.

A Continuous Galactic Line Source of Axions: The Remarkable Case of 23 Na

Here, we argue that $^{23}$Na is a potentially significant source of galactic axions. For temperatures $\gtrsim 7 \times 10^8$K -- characteristic of carbon burning in the massive progenitors of supernovae and ONeMg white dwarfs -- the 440 keV first excited state of $^{23}$Na is thermally populated, with its repeated decays pumping stellar energy into escaping axions. Odd-A nuclear abundances are typically very low in high-temperature stellar environments (or absent entirely due to burn-up). $^{23}$Na is an exception: $\approx 0.1 M_\odot$ of the isotope is synthesized during carbon burning then maintained at $\approx 10^9$K for times ranging up to $6 \times 10^4$y. Using MESA simulations, a galactic model, and sampling over progenitor masses, locations, and evolutionary stages, we find a continuous flux at earth of $\langle ϕ_a \rangle \approx 22$/cm$^2$s for $g^\mathrm{eff}_{aNN} = 10^{-9}$. Some fraction of these axions convert to photons as they propagate through the galactic magnetic field, producing a distinctive 440 keV line $γ$ ray detectable by all-sky detectors like the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). Assuming a 1$μ$G galactic magnetic field and a sufficiently light axion mass, we find that COSI will be able to probe $| g_{aNN}^\mathrm{eff} g_{a γγ} | \gtrsim1.8 \times 10^{-22}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at $3σ$ after two years of surveying.

Impact of disorder on dynamics and ordering in the honeycomb-lattice iridate Na 2 IrO 3

Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as α-RuCl 3 , Li 2 IrO 3 , and Na 2 IrO 3 continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use 23 Na nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single-crystal Na 2 IrO 3 . We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below T N the spectra show a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Both of these results provide evidence for inequivalent magnetic sites at low temperature, suggesting inhomogeneities are important for the magnetism. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is isotropic and diverges at T N , suggesting that the Kitaev cubic axes may control the critical quantum spin fluctuations. Finally, in the ordered state, we observe gapless excitations, which may arise from site substitution, emergent defects from milder disorder, or possibly be associated with nearby quantum paramagnetic states distinct from the Kitaev spin liquid.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Quantum spin state transitions in the spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2

We report we have grown single crystals of Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 , a spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are as follows: (i) At zero magnetic field, Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $\textit{c}$ axis. This suggests a canted 120° spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $\textit{c}$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $\textit{c}$ axis. (ii) With increasing field along the $\textit{c}$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed, which means that the canted 120° spin structure is transformed into an up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves into possible V and V' phases. (iii) With increasing field along the $\textit{a}$ axis, the canted 120° spin structure is possibly transformed into an umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 is a rare example of a spin-1 ETLAF with single-crystalline form that exhibits easy-axis spin anisotropy and a series of quantum spin state transitions.

Introducing the monoclinic polymorph of the honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the low-energy Hamiltonian of honeycomb cobaltate systems could be dominated by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. Motivated by the theory, a honeycomb layered material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 with a hexagonal unit cell has been studied and found to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 27 K with two spin reorientation transitions at 15 and 5 K. Here we report a monoclinic polymorph of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , also with honeycomb layered structure but with a single AFM transition at 9.6 K and without spin reorientation transitions at lower temperatures. Here, using neutron diffraction, we identify an in-plane zigzag AFM order in the ground state with the spins canted out of the honeycomb planes and ferromagnetically coupled between them. The zigzag order is suppressed by a magnetic field of 6T. The lower critical temperature and field, positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and out-of-plane canting of spins in the monoclinic Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 suggest enhanced frustration in this polymorph compared to the hexagonal one.
