Food packing optimization

The development of a universal closure lid for the space shuttle food package is reported. The revised lid needs a folded configuration which, when unfolded, fully conforms to the interior surfaces of the food cup. Experimental thermoform molds were fabricated and test lids formed. The lid material not in contact with the food conformed to the cup interior without wrinkles, permitting full nesting of the cups. The final lid design was established and thermoform tooling designed and fabricated. Lids formed on these molds were tested for strength. The heating elements were replaced and repositioned to eliminate any hot spots which may cause warpage.

Telescoping columns

An extendable column is described which consists of several axially elongated rigid structural sections nested within one another. Each section includes a number of rotatably attached screws running along its length. The next inner section includes threaded lugs oriented to threadingly engage the screws. The column is extended or retracted upon rotation of the screws. The screws of each section are selectively rotated by a motor and an engagement mechanism.

Development of a fast ion mass spectrometer for space research

An ion mass spectrometer having a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer and either a cylindrical or spherical electrostatic analyzer is described. The instrument has two nested channels and a postacceleration between the electrostatic and E bar x B bar analyzers for wide ranges of energy and mass responses. It is noted that the dual-channel construction not only doubles the data acquisition rate but also permits a reversal of the electrostatic field orientation in the inner channel for lighter ions. The outer channel is then optimized for ions of medium to high mass numbers, resulting in increased mass resolution for such heavy ions. When combined with a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer, a 90-deg-deflection angle spherical electrostatic analyzer provides an extremely wide viewing angle. The angular distribution of ions can be derived from such geometry if a position-sensitive resistive anode or a detector array is used at the exit aperture. Details on the principles of operation, the instrument design, and calibration are presented.

The Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar /VOIR/ mission

The VOIR mission will be devoted to obtaining synthetic aperture radar images of at least 70% of the Venus surface at resolutions of 600 m/line pair or better. High-resolution spot coverage, nested within the low-resolution data, will be obtained for up to 1% of the surface. Additional investigations will examine the shape and gravitational field of the planet, the character of its interior, the composition and dynamics of its atmosphere, and its interaction with the solar wind. This paper describes the VOIR mission as it is presently planned, and shows how the design of the spacecraft and the mission is responsive to the project science requirements as well as other programmatic constraints. In addition, several of the tradeoffs associated with the evolution of the present VOIR spacecraft and mission plan are reviewed.

Arc structure in Saturn's radio dynamic spectra

It is pointed out that one of the most spectacular findings of the Voyager 1 planetary radio astronomy experiment (PRA) was the discovery of nested arc-like structures in the dynamic spectra of Jupiter's decametric emission. These arcs have curvature in either a direction towards increasing or decreasing time. Similar arc structures are also evident in Saturn kilometric radiation. These structures appear superimposed on the strong intensity modulation which is controlled by the rotation of the planet and on fast and narrow band fluctuations which give a very large variability to the PRA observations on a 6-s, 20-kHz scale. The characteristics of the arcs are examined and compared with the arc structure in Jupiter. The similarities between Saturn's and Jupiter's arc structures are found to imply that they are probably due to the same physical mechanism.

Precise source location of the anomalous 1979 March 5 gamma ray transient

Refinements in the source direction analysis of the observations of the unusual gamma ray transient are presented. The final results from the interplanetary gamma ray burst network produce a 0.1 arc sq. min. error box. It is nested inside the initially determined 2 arc sq min. source region. This smaller source location is within both the optical and X-ray contours of N49 although not positioned at either contour center.

The application of soft X-ray imaging techniques to auroral research

The feasibility of building and operating a grazing incidence X-ray telescope for auroral zone studies from the Polar Plasma Laboratory (PPL) is discussed. A detailed structural analysis of the preferred design, an array of seven nested Wolter mirrors, is presented. An engineering evaluation of the requirements for the instrumental configuration, power, weight and telemetry is included. The problems of radiation hardening and thermal control are discussed. The resulting strawman instrument is presented.

CAM controlled retractable door latch

A latching mechanism in which there is linear movement and rotational movement is described. The umbilical doors of the space shuttle orbiter are required to be open during vehicle launch. After the external tank is released, the doors are closed. Presently, the device for maintaining the doors in an open position is mounted on the external tank and therefore has a single mission life. The latching mechanism of the invention is mounted in the orbiter and therefore is returned and has multimission capability. The latching mechanism is comprised of a pair of concentric nested, cylindrical cams and motors to actuate the cams, and latch pin all contained within a cover mounted on a support bracket carried by the substructure. A shaft having a latch pin is mounted inside the inner cylindrical cam.

Scattering by ensembles of small particles experiment, theory and application

A hypothetical self consistent picture of evolution of prestellar intertellar dust through a comet phase leads to predictions about the composition of the circum-solar dust cloud. Scattering properties of thus resulting conglomerates with a bird's-nest type of structure are investigated using a micro-wave analogue technique. Approximate theoretical methods of general interest are developed which compared favorably with the experimental results. The principal features of scattering of visible radiation by zodiacal light particles are reasonably reproduced. A component which is suggestive of (ALPHA)-meteoroids is also predicted.

Damage tolerant design using collapse techniques

A new approach to the design of structures for improved global damage tolerance is presented. In its undamaged condition the structure is designed subject to strength, displacement and buckling constraints. In the damaged condition the only constraint is that the structure will not collapse. The collapse load calculation is formulated as a maximization problem and solved by an interior extended penalty function. The design for minimum weight subject to constraints on the undamaged structure and a specified level of the collapse load is a minimization problem which is also solved by a penalty function formulation. Thus the overall problem is of a nested or multilevel optimization. Examples are presented to demonstrate the difference between the present and more traditional approaches.

Late-stage summit activity of Martian shield volcanoes

The preservation of morphologically fresh lava flows which pre-date the most recent episodes of caldera collapse at the summits of Ascraeus, Arsia and Olympus Montes indicates that explosive eruptions were not associated with this stage of Tharsis shield volcanism. The existence of resurfaced floor segments, complex wrinkle ridges, and lava terraces within the summit craters suggests that lava lakes comprised the dominant form of the intra-caldera activity. Multiple collapse episodes on Ascraeus and Olympus Montes are indicated by the nested summit craters. The most plausible cause of caldera collapse appears to be large-scale sub-terminal effusive activity, which is corroborated by the previously recognized existence of large lava flows on the flanks of these volcanoes. Due to the implied sequence of large-scale explosive (silicic) volcanism followed by effusive (basaltic) activity, it appears highly unlikely that ignimbrites or other forms of pyroclastic flows (previously proposed as possible deposits within the Olympus Mons aureole material) were ever erupted from the Tharsis Montes.

Modification of multi-ring basins - The Imbrium model

It is shown that the gross variations in wall height around Imbrium result largely from intersection of the Imbrium basin with pre-existing basins and faulting: angle of impact and slumping played a lesser modifying role. The gross irregularities in plan of the northern part of Imbrium is hypothesized to result from the collapse of large crustal blocks into the Imbrium and Serenitatis cavities. Lithosphere thickness is believed to play an important role in the mechanisms of formation and modification of large craters and basins. The deduction of slow sub-lithospheric flow of material toward the cavity centers does not lend support to the tsunami model, requires a minor modification of the nested-crater model and provides a mechanism for the production of megaterraces. Spatial and temporal lithosphere variations satisfy constraints requiring the overlap of morphology/diameter characteristics, variable onset diameters between planets, variable ring spacings from planet to planet and provide a mechanism for producing local irregularities in ring structures.

Microwaves and hard X-rays from solar flares - Multithermal and nonthermal interpretations

It is generally accepted that the hard X rays and centimeter-wavelength (microwave) radio emission from impulsive solar flares come from a common source. The present investigation is concerned with the development of a model for impulsive hard X rays and microwaves under the assumption that they arise from the same distribution of electrons, possibly, but not necessarily, from the same volume of space. An examination is conducted of a model in which the hard X rays and microwaves are produced in a homogeneous volume by a power-law electron distribution (nonthermal model). An investigation is also performed of a multithermal model in which the hard X rays and microwaves come from an inhomogeneous source, a nest of magnetic arches in which the highest temperature electrons are confined to a small core, and where, away from the core, the temperature decreases. It is found that more or less satisfactory models can be constructed using either multithermal or nonthermal, power-law electron distributions.

Concepts for an optimized Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror module for a high throughput LAMAR facility

Alternative concepts are proposed for the design and fabrication of Kirkpartick-Baez nested crossed plate reflectors applicable to a high throughput, moderate resolution X-ray facility composed of a Large Area Modular Array of Reflectors (LAMAR). Numerical, structural and optical analyses are used to quantify the performance characteristics of the concepts proposed. It is found that the theoretical performance of certain concepts approaches the 0.2-min resolution of a perfect parabola of translation. The instrument under consideration has about 1000 sq cm of effective area, or five times greater area than that of the Einstein Observatory.

Grazing incidence relay optics

The necessity to work in the focal plane of the primary mirrors has been one of the factors limiting the utility of grazing incidence telescopes in X-ray astronomy. In connection with the reported investigation, computer ray tracing programs have been used to study the performance of several grazing incidence relay optics (GIRO) systems used together with a large nested solar X-ray telescope. It was found that GIRO magnifiers are useful to map appropriate sized regions of the sun onto available CCD detectors. GIRO collimators can be used together with an X-ray spectrometer to study the X-ray spectrum from very small regions on the sun. Attention is given to the stationary mode, the tracking mode, and the size of GIRO elements. It is found that for a given GIRO size and magnification a use of the diverging system has the advantage of reducing the overall length of the main telescope-GIRO combination. However, the resolution provided by the diverging GIRO may not be as good as that obtained with the corresponding converging GIRO.

AXAF, a permanent orbiting X-ray observatory - Telescope and instrumentation plans

The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) now under study is to be a long-lived X-ray observatory in space. It is to be launched by the Space Shuttle, maintainable on-orbit, and retrievable for ground re-furbishment. The AXAF is conceived as an X-ray telescope with 6 nested grazing incidence X-ray mirrors (with a maximum aperture of 1.2 m) and interchangeable and replaceable focal plane instruments. The optics will provide 0.5 arcsecond imagery over a several arcminute field and somewhat reduced resolution over 1 degree in the X-ray band from 0.1 to 10 keV (1.2 to 120 A). The characteristics and expected performance of the observatory are described.
